Wave IX - Reaction...meh

By Segmentvs, in X-Wing

I saw the news for wave IX early this morning, right after I woke up.

My excitement of new ships was tempered by not actually being excited by what was presented. I didn't even care much for the style of the writing of the article itself.

Now, I have to say, there is nothing wrong with the expansion. There are new ships so what is there to complain about? I was also reflecting about a similar feeling about Wave VIII. I liked the S&V stuff, but the rest I could take or leave. So I had to think a little deeper.

Wave VIII had two Force Awakens ships "added" that were never really part of that release making it feel disjointed, and the two ships from Rebels looked too much like a carton and not real models. With Wave IX, there is no real flow or theme. We have a Clone Wars era ship, a Force Awakens era ship, and two ships for S&V from Rebels. The S&V ships also look too much like carton ships as well to me. I realize between the Ghost and the two new ships that it is more the paint schemes than the designs, as the TAP actually grew on me very quickly, and some of the Ghost repaints on the forums make that ship look way better to my eyes.

All that said, what I realize I am lacking is an emotional connection to this release. I have no passion for any of these ships. There is nothing wrong with any of them. I am sure I will be delighted by a lot of the upgrades as more information becomes known. I also realized that this is the reason I am totally excited about Imperial Veterans and meh about Heroes of the Resistance (and I love the Force Awakens).

I do find that once again FFG has pulled out some real wins on the design front. I didn't think I would like the K-Wing, but they turned out an awesome model, and I look forward to seeing the ARC-170 and the K-Wing soar next to each other.

So I say to all of you that may also feel meh, consider that it may be the lack of connection to these ships since they are neither OT nor of the beloved EU err, I mean Legends.

What a sad horrible little corner of the world... lonely, raining all the time...

This ain't even a nice place for a drive by lookies.

I'm meh about everything but the Fang. As long as its generics are reasonably priced I think it will be the Interceptor-style ship that the Scum faction needs. Plus, it look like a backwards Scyk and that just makes me smile.

ARC-170: Aesthetics are good, but I don't have any real feelings for it good or bad. Looks like it will be a decent heavy fighter with tricks, maybe a force of B-wings and ARCs will be fun.

TIE /sf: With only the PS9 Quickdraw spoiled, I'm very meh about this. I don't see a big point in replacing my Fel, Inquisitor, or Defenders with a ship that costs the same without a lot of big benefits. Especially with the weak defense of 2 Agility and no Evade actions.

Shadow Caster: Gimmicky turret and horrible visual appeal. This thing looks too close to a Star Trek ship, and is fairly expensive to deploy. Not worth it over the JM5K or YV-666.

Just an initial impression Star Brother. I will come around as each news article is released. ;)

I found it really interesting that they packaged this ship like a Tie Fighter with only two upgrade cards and more pilots.

I have a thread mentioning that exact same thing. Its odd.

I felt the same way when I watched TFA for the first time Brah. I know sacrilege and so forth, but I was just not impressed by the actual film. I had seen the sneaky-ass-jar-jar-brams nostalgia stuff a bunch already and had cried and laughed and hoped and dreamed.

Then I got to see the **** ADD Millennials go super gurl-power GOooo crap and the horrid rushed stupid-ass-story.

But hey at least we are getting more toys, and the other films will prolly be awesome.

 :P :D

There is a theme! We're getting pilots from the cartoons and books (and comic books). I couldn't be more excited!

Love the dam toys... now just make the rest of the films batters too and we are golden!

:D

Not every ship's for everyone. Count this as a good thing since it means you won't be motivated to spend as much money.

Me personally, I'm not excited for either of the Scum ships (They didn't have a particularly prominent role in Rebels) and I don't play Empire. The ARC-170's pretty exciting though; love the possible combinations of crew and astromech, and Norra Wexley's ability is the sort that gets me brainstorming for ways to abuse it.

The original trilogy doesn't have anything left for Fantasy Flight Games to use, but I bet they will still be releasing stuff based on the old Legends EU. Wave 8 had two of the most requested Legends ships and obscure characters Manaroo and Tel Trevura. While Legends EU stuff won't be dominating the new waves thanks to new Star Wars media, I can still see a ship here and there like the oft-requested Assault Gunboat and Missile Boat.

Sounds to me like you should have gone back to bed.

Said another way, despite it being Thursday...

The ARC surprised me. As someone who really didn't want to see any prequel ships in the game, I'm finding I like the model quite a bit.

Tie/SF... Another Tie. Meh.

Fang Fighter is cool enough. Not breath taking but cool.

Shadowcaster I have zero attachment to and am actually a little sad it made it in to the game over other options.

Also, isn't Wave 8 in roman numerals VIII? Unless you really have gotten your hands on Wave 13! Let me see!!

Haha.. Fixed. Thank you. I missed that despite a proof read before posting.

Fang looks great. Giving Scum a PS9 Mandalorian Ace could be very interesting.

ARC I was disappointed to see as Rebel-only. It'd have been very interesting if it came with 3 Rebel and 3 Imperial pilots. Either that, or an Imperial version in dark grey is coming some time after the main wave...

Special Forces TIE looks pretty solid. I'm surprised by the 2 Agility, but the pack has a lot of potential, depending on what the Tech and System cards it might bring.

The Large ship looks great, and I kind of wish that the turret mechanic had been the way they'd done turrets from the start.

The reason why the Arc's a Rebel ship is it fits the style of Rebel ships better than the style of Imperial ships. Astromech slot, low agility with high hull and shields, looks like an X-Wing.

Also, the Y-Wing and Z-95 are other Clone Wars era Republic fighters that are now used by the Rebels and not the Empire, so the Arc's not alone.

The sf could well be DoA if the new tech doesn't give it a big defence boost, two agility is not great and there's no shield regeneration to compensate.

Ps9 pilot has a decent ability but not the survivability needed to really make it shine.

Overall seems like another ship that's overpriced at release and will need to be fixed.

I'm a sucker for giant goofy models with stupidly huge wings

13247768_10156899796875142_6563406245009

so I'll at least be buying two arcs, if nothing else

the wave is eh for me because there isn't a whole lot of auto-damage coming, which the game could always use more of, and the arc pilots seemed made specifically to make me not want to take bb-8 sabine seismics. I mean, what's the point of crew + torp + astro if that combo's not the best thing ever :( ?

Still two pilots to go! And the combo won't be bad on Norra with VI or PTL!

Don't be sad. Get a cup of coffee and embrace the new wave.

Nah I'm taking the English route and having a moan.

I was Meh over 7, I was actually bummed out and demoralized over 7. Eventhe Khiraxz had the ugliest model.

I was, alright over 8, because the ghost is nifty, and the TAP.

9...

9 I am really excited about. Empire gets actual FIREPOWER, Scum gets SOME AMAZING BADASSNESS in the fang and Shadowcaster. and... ARC. I LOVE THE ARC!

I for one want to say a heartfelt goodbye to the old EU purists.

It seems that the days of your love and passion are coming to an end in XWing, and I can imagine you might be hurt by this or possibly leave the game. I won't know how the forum will be the same without you telling me about versions of the Tie I never knew about are better then the Ties that FFG chose to produce or how an obscure old EU ship looks a lot like the new ship from a new movie but the new ship is much worse. Your wisdom and clarity will be missed.
For those who stay, I applaud your strength in these hard times. I will look for you at tournaments, the ones playing only play up to wave 7 ships in a crusade to stick to what you believe in.

Huh? I am still holding out for several EU ships. Wave 9 didn't dishearten me in the slightest.

Wave 7 did as mentioned. (Punisher for gods sake, and K-wing - previous to that release these ships were joked about).

I love how it's always ok to bash people for loving Legends. Stay classy

It's more the fact that they bash the fact that they don't get all the legend ships they feel they deserve. Personally, I'm hoping FFG never release a gunboat, just to prove a point.
