The ARC-170 pilots...

By Chucknuckle, in X-Wing

they could also have different abilities

though the only precedent is ep 7 chewie and han, which fly the same falcon but are promised different abilities than in the original expac

Has anyone read the latest Aftermath book? There is a new one. Maybe they fly them in that book? Or maybe there is a product coming out that actually has them doing it? It seems a likely possibility.

Release date of the 2nd Aftermath book is July 12, so I'm guessing nobody here has read it.

Well they did jump to a sub-faction.

sub-factions basically mean jack and **** atm

Maybe, then that makes me the only one with good sense!

"I'm not the crazy one, it's all of you who are crazy!"

Thanks on that. I wasn't sure. Tried to like your post, but the forums acting weird for me (really slow).

Well currently they mean "Same pilot flies same ship but with different ability."

While I think that the double sided ARC-170 card that have the same pilots in a different ship are wishful thinking... I AM wondering what else is going to be on the cardboard for that ship. Its one of those medium expansions like the K-Wing and the cardboard that is shown in the spread does not look like enough to fill up both boards. Is there enough room for two more ship tokens?

Also, anybody have a guess what the evade token is for? I assume maybe that Astromech to give some 1 agility ships a little more surviveability. Or maybe one of the pilot abilities?

I tink it would have been cool if they would have given us a couple of scum pilots and a couple of rebels. I like the notion of an old refurbished ship kept flying. thats exactly the way the rebellion or scum would operate.

The scum ship cards could have run the salvaged astros and the rebs could have had the regular astro slot.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have these 4 interesting ARC-170 pilots in place of A-Wing and X-Wing pilots. Yes Y-Wings need new pilots, but hopefully we'll get that in the future. So for now, yes, fluff takes a backseat to gameplay when fluff CAN be reasonably compromised.

Yes, fluff takes a back seat, and it's AWFUL. I would much rather have four blandly named generic pilots (Red ace, Red Leader, etc) than using named pilots that don't fit the ships. The mechanics are ultimately separate to the skin. You can lay any skin over those mechanics and they'll work just the same. Frankly, the mechanics of this game are pretty average, and it's only the skin that is it's saving grace. And in this case, they've laid the wrong skin over these mechanics. They'll work just the same no matter what the names of the pilots are, but it's jarring and grating and just plain wrong to use those names with these ships.

You make it sound like every mission they ever flew was documented. I'm sorry that FFG fleshed out the backstories of minor characters you liked.

I had this idea while ago (ask me about the t wing) but it's a bit much to ask for the two separate dials in one package. And if scum taught us anything it's that they don't do single packs for cross-faction paint schemes

Gods darnit. This is the first wave I'm not super stoked about. Besides the Mandalorian ship, which even then, it just feels like a grasping at straws wave. Probably because it has no rhyme or reason. Previous wave ships were finishing the bounty hunters thing, the aces thing, the civil war thing, and even rebels thing, but this just feels like... I dunno. desperate.

I know these ships all appear in the series or movies but still I don't care. Give me an X-Wing or E-Wing thing. Or a Scum huge ship. I don't know. I'll still likely buy them just for the cards.

Theme and reason: Backfill. Two ships missing from Rebels and the last fighter missing from The Force Awakens. The ARC-170 is just extra credit.

Not to say that you're wrong to not be excited - that's obviously subjective - but there is a common theme here: arcs. Each of the ships introduces a new concept for firing arcs. The Special Forces TIE and ARC-170 are the first small ships with auxiliary arcs and come with titles that treat them as more than just extra firing lanes. The Protectorate Starfighter is built like an arc dodger, but is specifically designed to reward jousting. The Shadow Caster introduces the mobile firing arc.

This wave isn't a fluff bonanza like 8, but it introduces more mechanical variations, most of them based around manipulating arcs in ways that we've never seen before.

Until we get HOTR, and Kylo ren's pickup truck, basically yeah. But as soon as both are available, the Resistance and FO will have enough ships for them to stand on their own with out feeling so meh, they can begin being true to being a sub faction without help from GCW era stuff. Which is neat, even if it does limit your build options, i'm sure it can still be made to work.

And for all we know, for the ARC pilots could have been on orders of Disney to get some of the new canon stuff into the game, asap.

Nah, it can't be that, because we've been assured that Disney want nothing to do with the prequls or anything from them, they'd rather pretend they never happened. FFG are the same. That's why we'll never thee the ARC-170 in X-Wing. Wait a minute...

no, it'll still mean jack and ****

there is no earthly reason to split sub-factions ito gameplay, apart from pissing off the player base by introducing unnecessary list building restrictions that'd sap variety for no real gain

players wanting to play themed list will, obviously, be more than welcome to since it's their lists we're talking about, but actually enforcing sub-faction splits with ANY gameplay changes is a stupid stupid idea

rebels v imperials gets you themed lists AND awesome variety

subfactions meaning anything just gets you the former

There's no reason to do this though. It doesn't make for a better game since thematically the Resistance and FO are the same as the Rebellion and Empire. X-Wings vs TIE Fighters, tough synergy vs swarms and aces, good vs bad, you get the idea.

R3 seems likely "Once per..." My guess would be once per round you may assign an evade token after being targeted by an attack. This with IA would be a huge upgrade to X-wings too.
