Best Scout

By quartersmostly, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Just got back into the game with the release of the RtL app. Picked up the two big box expansions a few weeks ago and just got the H/M pack Treaty of Champions. Was taking a look at the heroes and was surprised how much better they made Grey Ker from the CK. He really seems like a beast, and for RtL his hero ability is much better than it is in a standard game.

From the scouts I have he seems clearly the best, but was wondering which hero people thought was the best Scout without taking into consideration class combos.

Logan and Lindel by far. Their hero abilities are not just phenomenal, they have the stats to back them up.

I'm using Grey Kher- Shadow Walker in my current campaign. He's being doing well.

Wow. I have this hero but haven't seen him in action. He looked good but wouldn't have guessed people think he is the hands down best.

First, Logan cannot be immobilized... but this is not the whole of his heroic ability, he can also move 1 space after performing an attack with an exotic weapon... Treasure hunter equips a whip (exotic weapon) as a starting weapon so every attack gains you 1 space of movement. His Heroic feat allows him to gain one extra move and attack... so basically an entire extra turn worth of actions... and you can choose to move, attack, either, or not.

Give him the crossbow, which is an exotic/bow weapon and you get to see where he shines.

Personal tastes aside, if you're going purely by stats and abilities then Logan has to be #1 with Lindel not dragging far behind.

Logan's immunity to Immobilize, extra movement and Heroic feat makes him a beast for combat. Lindel has a great, almost universal utility ability and a pretty good Heroic Feat that practically guarantees you're going to hit with damage and a surge.

Treasure Hunter class is really good as well, however since you mentioned you're getting back into the game thanks to the RtL app I suggest you take a look at the Bounty Hunter, Shadow Walker and to a lesser extent the Stalker class. Those 3 classes also have starting weapons with the Exotic designation and can work well with Logan's ability. For example, you could attack once with the Bounty Hunter's Double Crossbow and use Logan's ability to move one more space to be in range to trigger Longshot.

Silhouette and Tetherys are also pretty good, very underrated in my opinion.

Tetherys is all about combat and maximizing the potential of your rolls.

Silhouette has a Feat that lets her dash towards objectives while picking up search tokens along the way and her ability is great as it turns the dreaded X into an opportunity to dish out up to 3 Damage to an adjacent foe (That it can't defend against) if she's dual wielding weapons.

And on that note I'll just say that I like Thaiden Mistpeak .

He's on top of nobody's list, and while his Heroic feat is far outclassed by others I think it's more useful in the RtL app because it can save you from dying in certain situations and thus losing that all important Moral. I really like his ability too. It also turns the damned X from a wasted action into a positive by allowing you to get that search token nearby that you're too busy to bother with at the moment, what with the Overlord's minions trying to rip your throat out at all times.

And while the rest of you will  at me, let me just finish by saying no other Scout has the style, panache and all around "pimpness" of that flamboyant feathered hat . Lord have mercy!

I've now played in a few different RtL campaigns with Logan as the Treasure Hunter. And you are 100% correct . He is ridiculous. If I was the OL playing against him I would be extremely frustrated. Once he gets a few sills under his belt it is possible for him to attack twice, search, and move up to 7 spaces in one turn at the low low cost of 1 fatigue. This isn't even taking into account his heroic feat which would let him throw another attack and 4 movement on top of that. That is insane!

Thing is, Logan + Treasure Hunter is leagues better in a standard campaign, because then the treasure hunter class cards are digging for an actual Treasure Chest, instead of just potions and talismans.

I'm not a big fan of Greg Ker's special ability where he can take one action and then delay his other action. Haven't found myself using it. Am I missing something?

His heroic extra action is pretty good though.

Like I wrote in the original post his ability is really good in RtL. It allows the heroes to take 3 actions at the start of a round thus potentially reducing the number of monsters that activate after the first hero activation. In standard descent its usefulness seems much more situational.

I have to say the new "Arvel Worldwalker" has a strong heroic that makes her HIGHLY versatile.

"Use on your turn. Return up to 2 of your Class cards to your Class deck. Then, gain any number of Class cards from your Class deck worth an equal amount of XP."

Already played Arvel (new) in a small campaign, and ... usefull, fun, but nothing more.

Many (if not all) of the Feat of the heroes give actions or tempo. Here, it's nothing like that, so, changing skills doesn't offer you any of thoses.

I'm not gonna play here again

Grey Ker's ability allows him to delay his second action, allowing for some tactical flexibility.

In a tabletop campaign, you can use him to open a door, move the warrior through to open up a hole, then complete GK's turn to pick up a search item or an objective

In a RTL campaign, It's a little more obvious, since you get to activate him, then the next hero, before the monsters get a turn, so where the App punishes you for opening a door by having a several groups of monsters waiting to pounce on you if you're the last hero to activate, GK can open the door first, then let another hero's entire turn go before the monsters can retaliate.

I think that Grey Ker could be a cool shadow walker.

In his first action, he attacks and put the shadow soul, then the warrior attacks with extra damage, en then again, take back his turn to put the shadow soul anywhere else, and so on on each turn.

Strong!
