For Spring Break in my 17th year, my friends and I committed to doing a battalion-on-battalion Battletech game.
We covered a garage floor with hex maps.
We selected forces.
We deployed.
three days later, at 7-10 hours a day, we adjourned with elements of the Fifth Sword of Light being declared the victor over the White Hats mercenaries, it having achieved the goals of taking the supply depot, the underwater C3 bunker, destroying the 'bridge' into White Hat-friendly territory, and breaking the back of the assault company that the White Hat commander (me) was trying to use as a last-ditch spearhead to sever their own link, leaving no chance for the White Hats to salvage the seven assault 'Mechs on the battlefield.
...It was one of the best goddamn long weekends of my life. We spent the entire weekend at Rich's house, all six of us playing the game, and the time that we didn't spend playing we were TALKING about playing - except for the impromptu Street Fighter II tournament that I swept with Chun Li.
Oh, I'll not play Battletech again, I'm a full convert to Alpha Strike, but these kids complaining, "Oh, a game that takes over an hour is too long !" makes me smile and remember that weekend fondly.
I totally forgot I have a copy of this game it is a 2 player game with a 24 hour recommend run time.......
