Call of Cthulhu with AoR Dice System

By bdshow, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Does anyone know, or has anyone seen if the CoC game has been adapted to use this dice system? It's such a great system, but sometimes I'm in the mood to play something horror oriented. Especially thanks to FFG's excellent Arkham Files games.

I love both genres, even incorporate a lot of 'cosmic horror' into my SW games.

But CoC runs on the concept that the characters are normal people up against impossible odds, and will likely end up dead or insane.

Star Wars is a pulp action setting where the PCs are supposed to perform crazy swashbuckling heroics all the time. 'Never tell me the odds!'

I'm not really sure the rules would be a good fit for CoC, but good luck if you want to try!

I guess, I was thinking more along the lines of using the dice system vs. a D20.

I think that's Maelora's point: the dice system is set up for players to succeed in a heroic setting. It's just how the mechanics work. For example, in melee combat, the difficulty is always 2 purples (with the occasional modifier). This prevents a combat scene from becoming static, and lets even the least competent PC succeed once in a while. This is true for a lot of the skills in the game, it doesn't take much to become, for example, a master locksmith or a lore master.

So to use the dice mechanics you'd need to ramp up the opposition, giving most of them Talents like Intimidating and Fearsome, lots of Adversary, Soak, etc. Limiting access to only the basic equipment for the PCs would probably be necessary. You might also want to include a Sanity score (maybe 10 + Intellect + Willpower + Cunning + Presence), and introduce a LOT of Fear checks to mess with that Sanity score.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate all of the tips. Looking forward to trying it out. Anyone tried the End of the World line?

End of the world line would do call of Cthulhu easily!

But don't get discouraged, this same system was used for warhammer fantasy roleplay, so it doesn't HAVE to be swashbuckle like. Just keep difficulty tough, maybe add one difficult to all checks you have players do. And don't use the careers in the books, maybe disallow talents. The dice themselves really perform well and keep anything from being a sure thing, quite horrific if that means you never know when your ever gonna succeed!

If you were doing a pulpier take on CoC, like Achtung! Cthulhu, I think this would work really well. That's one of the reasons A!C was adapted for Savage Worlds (which was built on pulpy larger-scale combat).
