ARC170 comes to x-wing...

By Gottmituns205, in Star Wars: Armada

Wave 9 has the ARC170...so to all the naysayers who said that would never happen...it did cool.

So boys...does this mean we will be seeing the Venator and Acclimator and all the fighters there in?

About time. I needed a new item for my display case....much like the Ghost and the Falcon.

ALL IS LOST, ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER HERE.

In all seriousness /shrug. Not a fan, not losing my [expletive redacted], either.

Oh dear....

from here its not far to sink before we are facing the Gungan battlecruiser.....

There was warranted hate for the prequels...the ships though are pretty dope.

I liked how the article highlighted that the rebels had reconditioned some old ships...

That's a pretty good indicator that they aren't opening it up to other ships from the prequels. And as I saw posted elsewhere, what other rebel ships did they have to add to this wave?

They're definitely starting to run out, even from the EU. I would imagine Rogue One will give them that new, weird-looking one, and Episode VIII will probably have more ships as well. But they were definitely running low.

I think it's fair to say if it's in the new canon it'll be coming here.

The more they announce for Q3 2016, the more it concerns me.

I doubt their ability to hit that target for Wave 3/4 plus Wave 9/Resistance Heroes. So my guess is they really have a plan OR it's a case of the same old throw a date out, miss by 1-2 quarters.

Alliance overhauled CIS frigates it is for us then

More Rebels ships and characters. Rebels content for Armada and IA seem even more likely now.

Aclamator and providence are near

Which I feel is a good thing. Rebels is a great show, and because it is animated Disney has a lot of freedom to use it as a testing ground for it's new craft. I hope that we see a steady stream of new ships and IP flowing into Rebels and then see the best of the best on the big screen done well.

I've always wondered why the Rebels didn't use more clone war stuff. If you consider it, any insurgent force has to fight with what it can get its hands on. Clone war era equipment reconditioned in whatever quantity should seems like a natural fit.

Venator class star destroyers are still rolling around at the time of Endor according to FFG...so anything is possible.

That release was pretty F#$%in' rad! It's significant across the board.

The potential for WHAT new toys all of us might see in the future just got much bigger.

As someone who only plays Empire (in X-Wing as well as Armada), wave 9 doesn't really have much for me. The TIE/sf looks like just another TIE fighter (I know it's a little different, but.... not), and so isn't a really big WOW for me.

I'm also happy for the ARC-170 just because of what it does to the naysayers.

I think they have things that they delayed in the pipeline that are going straight from a finished design to in production as soon as capacity opens.up.

As I stated in a previous post, basically they actually lost large amounts of product in the Chinese port explosion and had to re-print and re-ship products that were already finished and about to arrive on store shelves.

It's entirely possible also that with Asmodee now fully integrated into the company they have access to their supply chain on top of their old one, giving them expanded resources to actually print and ship new products.

There is also the fact that this Wave 9 for X-Wing has already been shown in blisters, as finished product... So that production might already have started in limited numbers, or is already halfway-done, before even announcement...

That'd speed things up a stupid amount.

FFG should ask Disney to create more ships in their movies so we have new material to work with...

Legends, yes, but it's a possibility.

I'll be surprised if Rebels using Clone Wars era ships does not make it into the new canon. It's not like you can keep picking up Nebulon-Bs from Imperial shipyards whenever you please.

I think the idea that both factions would use re-fitted older technology makes total sense, particularly on the Rebel side. The ARC170 had proven itself to be a highly effective heavy fighter during the Clone Wars, and retrofitted by a Rebel force that needs all the equipment it can get its hand on it could continue to serve in this role well into the Galactic Civil War. Plus, whilst the Empire's main front-line battle fleets would utilise the latest equipment, it seems unlikely that they would scrap all of the older star destroyers from the Clone armies, instead using them in less important combat duties. We already see this in Star Wars Rebels, where they use Imperial light cruisers around Lothal as a minor planet in the Outer Rim.

Personally, I hope to see some of these fighters built into X-wing cross over into Armada. A new squadron pack for each faction in wave 5 would be awesome.

That what? Google doesn't seem to know what you mean.

Yes, particularly since such ships were produced at the height of the Republic's power, when vast wealth was available (as it was to the Seperatists and TF).

This is an Empire - it relies on a massive military - industrial complex. Keep everyone scared to justify a big fleet. Jack up the taxes to pay for it. Use the taxes to build an even bigger fleet. This has the double advantage of keeping the oppressed masses too poor to oppose you and keeps the Admirals on side. Everyone does really well in this system (apart from the oppressed masses), but it relies on a steady stream of big contracts to the ship and arms builders to constantly upcycle and expand the navy.

Also, real world (easy) military equipment does wear out, becoming ever more expensive and time consuming to keep it on line. So even if the empire did have a lot of surplus Venators etc left over I can see the interest in writing them off and replacing them.

For the rebels, as Max0 pointed out, the ARC170 comes from a time of unconstrained and unmanaged expenditure, and it shows - an aging, slow, three crew, hyperdrive capable and shielded fighter that can't turn into a TIE would be too much of an expensive liability for the rebels. That's why the Xwing is so great- it has all the capabilities but far lower capex and opex.

My point was entirely about the Rebels, for whom money is an issue, so I'll just address your last point.

  • Aging - irrelevent on its own, only an issue when it causes other issues.
  • Slow - so's a B-Wing
  • Three-crew - certainly not the Rebelion's perfect general purpose solution, but a situational concern
  • Hyperdrive - that's a good thing, the Rebels like that in their fighters
  • Shieling - also a positive
  • Can't turn into a TIE Fighter - I don't know what you mean
  • X-Wing - doesn't have all the same capabilities. The ARC is tougher, can take crew, has a rear gun, and from the sounds of it may handle better at lwer speeds
  • Expense - We've no indication at all that it will have high running costs and we know the rebellion loves other CW era ships. I also have no idea why you think overhauling an old ARC would be a greater capital expenditure than building a brand new X-Wing.
