FFG Org. Play question on future tournament formats

By Eyegor, in X-Wing

I know this has been brought up a few times before but I think there is room for more discussion. As a novice player I don't have the experience to comment intelligently on tourney formats, so let me ask the question:

Should FFG OP folks look at tournament format other than 2 player 100pt. open death match?

I know that LGS locations and some conventions have held alternate formats (not talking Epic here) but AFAIK official play is still only 1 style. What if we had some sort of "Novice" or "Limited" category where you had further limits as to what you could fly? Maybe X-wings and TIE /ln or /fo only? Or generics only? Maybe no ship worth more than 30 pts.? Or "sealed box" duels using only Starter Set components?

What do you guys think? None of these would replace the current format. Just something different. Kind of like how the star of the World Series of Poker is always Texas Hold'em but there are a dozen or so other events to compete in? Would it work or would no one care?

I think that playing list chicken like they're doing with the (Hoth, etc.) Open series could be an interesting way to go (bring two lists, show your lists to your opponent while you look at his or hers, pick which one you're going to fly in response in secret, reveal at the same time).

I think that it would help get more things into the meta, since even if one of your lists has a hard counter, your second list could just be a hard counter to that.

That said, I kind of like the consistency of the format. The more oddball game configurations there are, the more situations where a given upgrade card, etc. could be unbalanced, and I can't say that I feel a particular need for variety for variety's sake in the tournament scene (for casual nights, it's great).

I wouldn't deviate from 100 points. But the multi-list stuff is great.

I wish for OP epic games

With nice acrylic energy tokens, reinforce tokens

Alt art raider card, acrylics epic range ruler

I'd love to see scenarios used for competitive play. Something more than just "kill 'em" and I think scenarios can be designed to have a positive effect on list building too.

100 pt death match is boring and I would love to see a change.

FFG do support other formats through the season kits. Those kits are available so flgs can run OP events in any format they choose.

Whilst I love alternative game structures, it's easy to see why 100pt dogfights are the standard for Store champs up to worlds.

Anything else would be a logistical nightmare

Some kind of objective would be nice

I like how armada does it

You have 9 total to choose from, and must pick 3 and build your squad accordingly.

While some things would be better than others depending on the mission, it really could breathe new life into pilots/ships

Hell never know maybe fel wrath ability would become useful.

That's what id like.

Other than maneuver templates I personally don't use any other third person tokens

Except that fact there is no official cards / tokens for epic play. Hence why in want OP for epic

My reply was meant for the original poster. If you have no epic/escalation/scramble events happening near you, all i can suggest is getting a group of interested players and making the request to your flgs

The best new format is Drunk X-Wing. Each player plays a list that is randomly generated in Fab's squadron builder. It is a hoot and ridiculous.

hangar bay is where its at. Look at your future and rejoice!

It would be nice, but epic play is a niche market. I'd guess 50% of the community have never and/or will never play epic. That'll be even higher for people that place top 16 in tournaments I imagine.

Don't take me wrong, what's funny is there is no local xwing community in the Province where I live. I've tried multiple times but the two stores we have are to small, and mtg is the only thing they seem to cater to.

My xwing group here is my two friends and vassal

( we travel out of province to play in tournaments, and I know they'd make the trip for epic/team epic games)

I suggested epic format because for starters it may get more people interested.

If ffg pushed it a little more and did a epic kit once a year even, I bet more people would try it

Lots of people have the ships, but never use them.

Maybe if they see there are some official goodies they can win for them, they'll break them out more

Second, as you already stated there is nothing stopping people from using a summer kit and hold their own tournament with special rules, such as escalation, or "must field 1 genetic" rule.

I suggested epic play because it's the one thing there is currently no official content in the forms of acrylic/Alt art cards in xwing.

I'm sure ffg could make some really cool alt art cards for the raider or tantive, enough to make people want them.

Or even a large acrylic range ruler.

I think that be a pretty cool prize

Also as I stated above I think a change in the tournament format would be a nice change of pace.

I think a lot are getting tired with the 100 pt 6 rock matches.

I think having some sort of random mission that is decided before each game like armada would be fun, add that you must build two squads one from each faction and you decide after the mission is chosen

Sounds fun to me

I think the three most popular formats are Hanger Bay (already mentioned), Hunger Games (or Last Ship Standing to avoid IP issues), and Furball. Personally I love Epic and wished more played that format.

Next month attempting a hybrid between Hunger Games and Furball. Hope it goes well and maybe a future format (it rewards those who gets kills and upgrades to overcome those who just hang around waiting till the end to steal the win).

I'll bet you that top 16 players in Epic Tournaments have played Epic. ;) .

Objective based formats should be possible.
