Boba upgrade and, R4-D6 and Integrated Astromech

By Lightrock, in X-Wing Rules Questions

A quick question for rules gurus. Let's say we've got a following situation:

A Jumpmaster with proton torpedoes and Boba Fett crew shoots at Biggs with R4-D6 and Integrated Astromech. Jumpmaster scores 3 hits and a crit. Biggs rolls zero evades. Which of the following is true:

1. Biggs can use R4-D6 to cancel 1 hit at the expense of stress, then he can sacrifice R4-D6 to discard the crit. Boba cannot be used.

2. Biggs can use R4-D6 to cancel 1 hit at the expense of stress, then he can sacrifice R4-D6 to discard the crit. Boba can then be used (though it's pointless to use it).

3. Biggs can use R4-D6 to cancel 1 hit at the expense of stress, then Boba destroys R4-D6 before it can be sacrificed, rendering IA useless. Faceup card goes in.

4. Biggs can use R4-D6 to cancel 1 hit at the expense of stress. He cannot sacrifice R4-D6 once faceup card has been dealt, enabling Boba to destroy the droid. Hence, he chooses to sacrifice R4-D6 to discard one of the facedown cards. Crit goes in and Boba can then be used (though it's pointless to use it).

5. Boba destroys R4-D6. Biggs can neither use it to cancel 1 hit nor sacrifice it to trigger IA.

That was my take on it as well but didn't want to suggest anything :). Thanks for the quick answer.

#2. R4-D6 kicks in to reduce 3 booms down to 2 booms before suffering the damage. Damage will then be suffered with the booms taking out Bigg's Shield tokens and leaving the kaboom to deal a face-up card. Boba sees this face-up card and prepares for the chance to spring into action. Biggs can now eject the poor droid to discard that incoming card before it actually gets to do something. Boba has a chance to do something because a face-up card was dealt, even if it didn't land, but while IA is still a legal target it's now worthless and is left alone while Boba waits for a chance to pounce on something else.

1. Incorrect. A faceup card was dealt so Boba can still be used.

2. Entirely correct.

3. Incorrect, because Boba is being used during the attack here and his timing is after the attack.

4. Incorrect, because Biggs can use Integrated Astromech as it triggers during Step 7 - Deal Damage on receiving the damage card, and before Boba triggers.

5. Incorrect, because Boba is being used before his timing window (which is after the attack).

You need to be clear on exactly what happens and when it happens. If we pick up the attack just after Step 6 - Compare Results, it should go like this:

  1. Three uncancelled hits and one crit remain.
  2. Trigger R4-D6 and cancel 1 hit and receive a stress token.
  3. Step 7 - Deal Damage
  4. Apply the two hits, Biggs is now without shields.
  5. Apply the crit by dealing a faceup damage card.
  6. Trigger for Integrated Astromech, eject the poor droid and discard the faceup damage card without resolving it.
  7. The attack is now over, and now Boba triggers.
  8. Check for Boba: was a faceup damage card dealt? Yes (it doesn't matter if it was discarded), Boba may now choose to discard 1 of Biggs' Upgrade cards (or he may choose not to as there's not much worth discarding).
