What's up Pilots!

A certain Podcast host won his home Regional and has managed to grow even more insufferable. He boasts, rants, then attempts to share some actual X-Wing insight on the topic of Variance.

We’re fresh off participating in the San Diego X-Wing Miniatures Regional at At Ease Games, and Mynock Squadron had a solid showing. I defend my podcast credentials, Dallas trolls his way into the Top 4, and it’s an all Mynock final showdown between John Davis and one of our Hosts! Did I make good on his promise to win?

Today you'll also hear Dee utterly fail to keep his ego in check, and also self-righteously soapbox at FFG forum posters who dared to have the temerity to complain about Regionals. Eventually, he gets around to sharing what little knowledge he does possess regarding the topic of Variance, and how to strategically approach it.

You guys mentioned a bad Soontir death? Watch the Madrid regional finals, if you can find it. It seems like they made the video private that was previously linked on reddit.

I wonder if there's room to explore variance further as "upside", "downside", and "variance over time". The discussion on Scouts was a good example of this. Scouts are these big, beefy things with 9 hit points, but they also have 2 AGI. That means that you don't really lean on AGI to keep them alive, but when you get results it's a nice bonus (variance is usually upside). Contrast with an Interceptor, where you really need those Evades to come up, and hitting the low outliers of the bell curve is especially bad.

Go to the 45 minute mark.

Yes. AP was unmodified on top of all that. Soontir player did make a poor choice in spending his focus on attack though.

20% chance to do damage. 7.5% Chance to get a crit through. 6% chance for a Major Explosion. 37.5% chance to roll another hit. 6% chance for a Direct Hit...0.010125% overall chance. About 1 in 10,000.

^ and the Emperor on offense.

The only good Soontir is a dead Soontir.

Woohoo! Steven Gonzalez!

My most unlikely soontir death - possible, but not probable, at nationals, a full health focus token soontir died at range 2 through a rock, to an unmodified z-95 shot, hit + crit - Crit was minor explosion - roll was a hit, and boom... (old damage deck)

FYI Bin Laden mission DID suffer a rotor failure. Must have been player skill.

Helicopters are SUCH high variance. We keep suffering (Mogadishu!) for the benefits of VTOL insertion/extraction.

I get a bit wobbly in the knees, and it feels like a gut shot every time Whisper quad blanks. Losing Soontir to THAT extreme end of variance...I think I would've had to lie down for a bit, before recuperating and laughing it off!
