Campaign system suggestion

By DariusAPB, in X-Wing

This kind of a spin off from the meta threads, but I was kinda thinking of a cool campaign system to play.

team based, sake of argument 3 on 3, each side picks a side. each side nominates a commander.

Choose a round limit. a relatively quick campaign will be say 3 rounds.

Each person builds a squadron, say 300 points worth. Whether uniques are duplicatable between members is something to be agreed upon and clarified before squadron building. I would suggest each squadron has a certain theme, see below as to why.

Missions are generated/selected by random chance out of either the existing missions or custom.

After which, it is randomly decided which team is defender or attacker for said mission. Points limits, where possible are selected randomly . Otherwise defaults (often 100/100) are in action.

Naturally some squadrons will be better equipped for some missions than others.

Team leaders for each team choose which of their squadron leaders is playing for each mission selected.

Squadrons deploy, do their missions. Permadeath is in effect.

Repeat until you've played however many rounds were agreed on. Dead ships can't fly, if a player can't field 100 points he can still field what he can.

Winner is the team that has won the most games. If SOMEHOW there is a draw then all points in final showdown.

Anyone? No-one?

Hmmmmm. 300 is a lot.

It is. Factoring that 100 points is typically 2-4 ships the idea was to emulate a traditional star wars squadron of 12 ships.

Could be fun. Keeping it short can definitely be a plus.

I like the pilot mortality, and the idea of sending certain squadrons to execute certain missions. Could make for fun group dynamics - I suggest that if you do this, you try to keep the identities of the two players secret for each mission until the mission starts, working something like this:

1. Missions selected (random?)

2. Commanders selects one squadron for each mission, schedule time/place with enemy commander if necessary. Identity of players on each side not revealed.

3. Combatants show up without knowing who they will face in advance.

That's an excellent idea, if possible that would work great.

Pilot mortality is essential - reduces suicide run syndrome.

The random generation is the difficult part, but really - picking 20 missions and rolling a D20 would do it.

Another option of course depending on the players, is that the commander doesn't have the 300 points, he has say 200, and must include a capital ship, and random games may have epic options where multiple squadron commanders may enter play.

Are you planning this as like a one day event, or just brainstorming?

With permadeath it should be short, I think. Otherwise its a pain for a player who sustained a crippling loss in the first battle, has to go really uphill from there.

Sounds definitely interesting if you have the right people for it.

Sounds like a good league idea to me. The 200-300 pt squads make sense when combined with reducing your squad to match the points requirement of most missions; even if you lost your whole force ok mission 1, you still have 100 points of ships back in the hangar...

Right now brainstorming, though i'd be more than happy to run it for a group.
