IA side missions and order that you can do it

By Payens81, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Hello everyone,

this is my first time playing the IA and I have a question as the Empiral player. We just completed the first side mission for the Rebels. When I turned over my cards I got an Empire side mission and bought it with the Influence that I had.

Now it says that I have to play it after the hero's resolve a side mission. They just completed a side mission does that mean I can use that card right away? or do I have to wait until they complete another side mission.

Do as the card says. Agenda side missions and forced missions enter play and become active missions immediately when purchased.

An agenda forced mission will be played as the next mission, but it does not take a mission slot.

An agenda side mission will be available for the rebels to select when they next select a side mission to play according to the campaign log. If they select a different side mission to play instead, you get the reward automatically after you play the side mission. (It's specified in the card.)

Ah okay I get ya that makes sense now thank you.

So there is only ever a total of 10 missions in a campaign then?

Not necessarily (and this took me a long time to figure out). There are two types of missions that the imperial player can buy as agenda cards - side missions and forced missions. You buy them the same way, but the text on the card will either say "side mission" or "forced mission".

If the card you bought is a side mission, it gets added to the available side missions that the rebels have to choose from. The next time the campaign says to play a side mission they can either choose to do the side mission you played or one of their normal two. If they don't choose yours then that card goes away and you get the reward automatically. No matter which one they pick, it counts as the side mission on your campaign.

If, however, the card you bought is a forced mission then it works differently. The mission is run immediately - the rebels don't have any choice, and it doesn't matter what the next mission was supposed to be. This also doesn't count as one of the side missions in your campaign - you write the results in a separate spot on the bottom of the campaign sheet. Then, no matter what the results of the forced mission, you proceed to play the what would have been the next mission in the campaign (either side or story).

Clear as mud? :)

ah that makes sense now thank you yes makes it more like dirty water now than mud.

The campaign is always at least 11 missions long, including Aftermath. Forced missions add to the length (like I said, they don't reserve a mission slot), whether put to play from agenda forced missions or forced missions as a result of other (story) missions.

I think the thing that gets lost on a lot of new players (or at least what was lost on me) is that there are two types of agenda missions. My first campaign we ended up playing every agenda mission as a forced mission, which resulted in a few extra missions and a bit more XP/Credit/Influence than you'd normally have at the end of the campaign.
