What will the Next Expansion Be?

By Felswrath, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

With a surge in the popularity of these "What do you want to see?" threads, I propose one more, albeit a slightly different one. This thread is not for what do you want to see, but as the title says, what do you expect to see? You must give your reasons as to why you believe this. I'll go first.

Many believe we'll get a Jabba's Palace box next. In other threads, I have explained (or agreed) why thematically I don't believe this would work. That point has been debated much already, however, one point not yet put forward is not one that is thematic, but rather, deals with expansion of the game as a whole. We just received BG which came with two new types of Mercenary units inside, while containing no Imperials (I know we got them through the expansions.). I would imagine that it is undisputed that Jabba's Palace would not have Imperials. So we must ask ourselves, "Would FFG give us two expansions in a row with no imperial figures?"

The next is Endor. This one, I think holds a little more water, however, I believe the content required could not warrant a big box, which is why I believe it could be the next small box.

So next we have Rogue One. This would be my expansion of choice, but I doubt it will be the one we get. The simple reason for this is that I would guess a RO box would be time period 2, and the Inquisitor would be dead by then, therefore...

I believe the next box will be Rebels themed. To what extent, I cannot say; personally I would hope we only get a few of the Ghosts as allies, and would be very upset if we get any as heroes. But this expansion could give us both Imperials and Mercs. It would allow for all of the wave seven figure packs. And there would be enough content to warrant a big box.

I could see them doing a box built around the idea of stealing the clearance codes used in ROTJ as well as scouting out the endor moon. This allows us to have a nice sized Imperial, Rebel theme box. It could include a full Jedi Luke whose primary attack is saber now with perhaps a deflection ability. After that we could see a revenge of the Hutt Clan that could give us a Hutt big figure that would be a "Leader" for Mercs. Inclusion of the Inquisitor is interesting because he's the first character outside the 4-6 timeline.

I think it is to early for the Rogue One/Rebels era box.. if we see that it won't be until after the movie has hit theaters to make sure the hype is built up and people are clamoring for the merchandise. Endor/Hutt is the logical next step, not sure how they will pull it off but they've done a good job so far so I have faith. I still believe we have one more stop before Endor though.. otherwise they run the risk of running themselves out of OT material before the new year.

Obi Wan, Inquisitor, and Greedo Q3 make me think we'll be seeing a Rebels/Rogue One era big box in Q4, likely releasing right around the movie.

I'm not sure they will copy the movie or show exactly but it makes the most sense to turn back the clock and get an expansion out there for time periods 1/2 that can make use of those figures in campaign ASAP.

I was expecting something in the ROTJ era, but after Quizzy, Obi, and Greedo were announced I won't be surprised (or dissapointed) if a Rebels/RO box is next.

Jabba's Palace Big Box:

-3 Heroes

-1 Rancor

-4 Gamorian Guards

-6 Black Sun Soldiers/Nikto/Weequy thugs

-2 GNK droids (moveable cover with self destruct)

Expansions:

-Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight

-Hutt or Black Sun villian

-Mara Jade (highly unlikely but would be amazing if true, plus considering a more scum like release she would work well as an undercover agent.)

-Zuckuss and 4-Lom

The above is just based on the kind of expansions we've seen already, the story set up could be where the surviving members of Jabba's forces plan to take action to seek revenge on Luke and everyone else after Jabba's death or where someone moves in to take Jabba's place and they have information on the Rebellion that the heroes have to steal or prevent the Empire from getting it. Jabba could always be added as a Skirmish expansion character in the same way that Greedo and Obi-Wan are being released.

Endor Small Box:

-2 Heroes

-6 Scout Troopers

-2 Scout Troopers on Speeder Bikes

Expansions:

-Ewoks

-Han Solo, Rebel General

-Imperial Villian

-Zuckuss or 4-Lom (Provided they aren't released together.)

The idea being that the heroes have to stop the regrouping forces on Endor from gaining power or something along the lines of that, plus it would close out the original trilogy locations. Emperor Palpatine could be released as a Skirmish expansion figure.

Lothal Big Box Expansion:

-3 Heroes

-1 AT-DP

-4 IG-RM Enforcer Droid http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/IG-RM_bodyguard_and_enforcer_droid

-6 Imperial Combat Drivers/Imperial Cadet/Imperial Gunner

-2 (Not sure exactly)

Expansions:

-Hera and Chopper/Zeb and Sabine

-Agent Kallus

-Hondo Ohnaka?

Basically just them going into the next logical area of expansion and beginning to focus on Star Wars Rebels for a year or two through three or four expansion boxes before exploring other areas, though they may group some Rogue One stuff in there too especially as Season 3 of Rebels is hinted to include some elements for the film as well.

Jedi Small Box Expansion:

-Set focused on Jedi vs Inquisitors with the expansions including Ezra and Kanan as well as potentially Ahsoka.

I expect Rebels big box (possibly a "new core"/stand alone set as I've stated in other threads) in 2016 Q4 with 3 exp packs of Rebel Heroes/Kallus.

Next will be 3 exp packs most likely with Ashoka and Inquisitors in 2017 Q1.

Then I expect a "Rogue One"/A New Hope small box with 3 exp packs in 2017 Q2.

Then 3 exp packs to compliment Rogue One/ANH in 2017 Q3.

Then 2017 Q4 will see either more pre-trilogy or possibly see big box of RotJ set.

Then 2017 Q1 will be 3 exp packs.

Next 2017 Q2 will be small box of RotJ followed by e 3 exp packs Q3.

So by 2017 Q4 we will get big box set of The Force Awakens right before Episode 8 comes out.

I haven't played through every campaign yet, but don't they generally follow a chronological order? They can be played completely independent, but is there an overall linking story between them? If so it seems weird they would abandon this nearly at the end to start over with a different time period and new characters.

Nope. The small box sets can be used as side missions, but in general, each campaign is separate from the next.

We've gotten through 2 seasons of Rebels noe, we need an IA box set with figures from the show. Would be a cool way to get a new Darth Vader.

Obi Wan, Inquisitor, and Greedo Q3 make me think we'll be seeing a Rebels/Rogue One era big box in Q4, likely releasing right around the movie.

Yeah, Rogue One seems most likely.

I for one think they will finish the OT with at least one more Big Box Expansion (possibly dual focus on Tattooine and Endor? Maybe some Death Star 2 thrown in there for shiggles)

Then, maybe a small box OT, but more likely a Rebels box or two. (I find Rebels to be a more likely avenue for expansions because of its 2 seasons than Rogue One what with the movie not even being out yet...)

What will the Next Expansion Be?

Disappointing...

Its a shame that you seem to have fallen so badly out of love with IA.

I guess Rogue One/Rebels:

- They started the base box with time period 3, so it was planned all along to have one or more campaigns in 1-2.

- They just released three Figures at once that are already dead in Episodes 4-6. Why would they bring them without context? I doubt those characters won't be usable for a campaign.

- Looking at Tiles: We had one Big Box Expansion, Hoth, and it featured all new Terrain. Endor can be build up with Forest Tiles from the Core Set and only needs some Ewok Huts on one side, and the Second Death Star also can use the interior Tiles. That can be done with a small box expansion. Jabbas Palace is on Tatooine and only needs some special interior Tiles. It's even a smaller Place than Cloud City (with several Million Inhabitants). But if we look at the Rogue One Trailer we have some Palm Trees, perhaps Beach (A long Beach Tile would be awesome!):

Of course, Lothal with mainly green fields is an possibility, too.

They could use the backside to give the Death Star it's own Indoor Pieces (reusable for the Endor Small Box). Perhaps with that London Subway Station ;)http://cdn1-www.craveonline.com/assets/uploads/2016/04/lvdCd4C.jpg

- Miniature wise: Rogue One introduces a lot of Stormtrooper Versions that previously didn't appear on the big screen. Shadow Troopers, Some new Driver-Troopers in a new Hover Tank, and similar to these but not the same Scarab Troopers. That could be 6 Shadow Troopers, a Hover Tank, 6 Scarab Troopers, 3 new Heroes. Scum might get a bit less out of this box, since they got a lot out of Bespin (which had no Imperial Figures).

- Rogue One is announced for December. You don't have to be a Marketing Genius to see that opportunity.

So I am pretty sure the next big box will be a Rogue One/Rebel Timeline Set.

You never close your eyes anymore when you build your lists

And there's no tenderness like before in your forum quips

You're trying hard not to show it

Baby, baby I know it

You've lost that loving feeling

Woohoo that loving feeling

You've lost that loving feeling

Now it's gone, gone, gone woohoo

Now there's no welcome look in your eyes when you reach for Luke

And you're starting to criticize little things FFG chooses to do

It makes me just feel like crying

Baby 'cause baby something beautiful is dying

You've lost that loving feeling

Woohoo that loving feeling

You've lost that loving feeling

Now it's gone, gone, gone wohohohoho

Baby, baby, FFG will down on their knees for you

If you would only would love IA like you used to do

Yeah

We had a love, a love, a love you don't find everyday

So don't, don't, don't let it slip away

Bring back that loving feeling

Woho That loving feeling

Bring back that loving feeling

'Cause it's gone, gone, gone

And IA can't go on wohohohoho

Wohohohohoho wohohohoho

Now that I think about it for Rebels it might make more sense to have one big expansion set for Lothal with Hera and Chopper as the ally pack of that wave, then following that up with a small box expansion dealing with Mandalorians and the Losats where that set's ally pack is Sabine and Zeb whilst the last set is a Jedi vs Inquisitor box which includes Kanan and Ezra. This would allow at least another season or so of the show to go by so the characters that will be changing and growing the most can better reflect their overall character rather than just a season 1 or 2 version of said character. They could then follow up with a Rogue One box, or even have it take place of one of the 3 expansions I just mentioned. Then with those 4 expansions and 2 for ROTJ we are set for 3 years or so, which means that by the time Episode 9 is coming out they could easily start to release TFA set, and assuming 2 per film that would give them another 3 years of content for the game. In other words:

Jabba's Palance/Underworld Expansion Big Box: Q4 2016

Endor Expansion Small Box: Q2 2017

Rebels Expansion Lothal Big Box: Q4 2017

Rebels Expansion Concord Dawn Small Box: Q2 2018

Rogue One Expansion Big Box: Q4 2018

Rebels Expansion Jedi vs Inquisitors Small Box: Q2 2019

Jakku Expansion Big Box: Q4 2019

Takodanna/First Order Base Expansion Small Box: Q2 2020

Episode 8 part 1 Expansion Big Box: Q4 2020

Episode 8 part 2 Expansion Small Box: Q2 2021

Episode 9 part 1 Expansion Big Box: Q4 2021

Episode 9 part 2 Expansion Small Box: Q2 2022

The trend would seem to suggest we'll see something inspired by Return of the Jedi, but how much new is there to add there, that's the question.

Places

  • Interiors at Jabba's Palace
  • Sarlac pit (probably not much use in the game, I doubt we'll see it)
  • Ewok village
  • Death Star and Shield Generator Interior (interchangeable I reckon).

Peeps

  • Ewoks
  • The Emperor
  • Jabba
  • Salacious B. Crumb
  • Bib Fortuna
  • Malakili
  • Rancor
  • Yoda
  • Random scum
  • Hardcore Luke

Location-wise I think that's plenty for a big box, but model-wise I'm not sure - the allies and villains involved you'd expect to come as tokens and have figures sold seperately, with the bulk of the box being newly made up heroes, the monsters, and some generic types. Some new generic scum would be cool, but dunno if there's enough there for a big box...

There are plenty of Mercenary & Imperial mooks perfect for a Jabba's Palace themed big box:

Gamorean Guards

Weequay skiff guards

Jawa scavengers

Sandtroopers

Hmm, I hadn't thought of Sandtroopers because they're not in Jedi, but you're right, they would make sense. Well, that's a perfect big box then.

I want all the background characters from Jabba's palace too, such as Cane Adiss.

Mind you, wouldn't we all rather pretend that Stormtroopers on Dewbacks never happened?

"Special Edition" Dewback? Maybe.

However, I cannot help but look back to my childhood and that Topps Star Wars trading card with the perfectly framed shot looking up at the Stormtrooper on the Dewback and wax nostalgically for it.

It's bound to be Endor, with ewoks rebel commandos and hopefuly speeder bikes.

Though i hope that it is sullust which will introduce lava tiles. :)

Ah yeah, Rebel Commandos, that makes sense. And Scout Troopers maybe, but I'm not sure how they'd fit in the game.
