Which talents for an unarmed martial artist?

By kingpin000, in Game Masters

Hi there,

since there is no special talent tree for the Star Wars martial arts like Teras Käsi, I am looking for some advice which talents combinations would be appropriate. Especially ways to unarm an opponent without lightsaber...

Marauder's talents (Frenzied Attack and Feral Strength) work for both Brawl and Melee, so it's the best for dealing raw damage unarmed. Warden works pretty well, with Precision Strike, Overbalance, and Grapple.

Gadgeteer. Disorient, Improved Stunning Blow, Deadly Accuracy, all combine to make a very effective unarmed combatant.

Also, if you want to have the character be a bit of a brawler you can use the improvised weapons chart on p.212 of EotE core.

I would also suggest talking to you GM and seeing if they will let you add some advantage skills to your base strike disorient

defensive against Melee

Pierce with a knowledge Xenology or warefare role (to know where pressure points are)

Stun

Maybe vicious for the same reason as pierce

Maybe even see if they will let you disarm an opponent at 2 advantages instead of 3.

I recently built a warden, and in my research, I've found what matters most is what do you want to do? As a brawler, you get access to disorient and knocdown pretty handily (pun intended). This can make you a good controller as enemies are typically disabled by your actions.

You get access to Warden which lets you impose fear checks, but also locks enemies in place, and can cost them maneuvers.

Or you can go with pure damage, which means you'll want talents like the aforementioned deadly accuracy and frenzied attack.

Force Rating, plus Enhance. You get to either use your Force die with the Brawl skill, or commit that die and boost your Brawn. In a way it lets you save on your Brawn characteristic...you can easily have Brawn 3, saving 40XP at chargen to broaden your character's abilities, and still have Brawn 4 when you want it. Hit Dedication and you're a powerhouse.

In my own research I found the Spy/Infiltrator talent tree, which has Dodge and this can save him from an autofire death. Additionally the Vamblade in Dangerous Covenants, which gives the Sunder quality during dual weapon fighting. What do you think?

This is a good one, Seer is great even without the Brawl Skill as a career skill. Warden with Enhance is great too, it's amazing how often you miss and 1 or 2 more success would have landed the hit. When you decide to one two punch and use the Two Weapon Combat rules that an extra advantage will land the extra hit. That flexibility with Enhance is super powerful.
