Rebel Star Destroyer

By aNjaSqurl, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Greeting fellow Admirals and Generals. I'm new to the forums and Armada.

I visited a friend yesterday and had a chance to play my first game and see how some of the game play works. I was thinking of starting to build a small fleet and have landed in a quandary. From what I saw yesterday the strength for the Rebels in Shoot-n-Scoot tactics (unless you field an MC 80, but I like the idea of a rag tag fleet of smaller ships taking on the Imperials). My problem is this, I REALLY like Star Destroyers. I don't know what it is, but something about that arrowhead shape appeals to me far more than the curves of a Mon Cal MC 80. BUT, I think my initial play style would be more suited to the quicker and more agile rebel ships.

My question is this. Is there some sort of official or semi official way to incorporate an Imperial Star Destroyer into a rebel fleet? Lets face it, eventually the Rebels got their hands on a few and the New Republic sure as heck did. I'm not worried about it being tournament legal since I'll probably just be playing casually with friends so I figure that if they are ok with it we are set to go.

Nothing Official or Semi-official. Even Semi-officially, its outright banned by the Rules.

Casually with Friends... Go for it.

Or just wait until the Liberty drops in wave 4. Not the same thing but may provide more or less the same functionality.

Another option would be to use an ISD model with the stats of an MC80, if you're just after that sweet model.

Again, obviously not in a tournament or anything, but with friends this is a good option for preserving the integrity and balance of the game while still getting to fly an ISD.

I would suggest that you talk to your friend and come up with some rules for "Captured Ships" maybe only 1 per fleet and you add an extra cost of say 10 points for a small base, 15 points for a medium base and 20 points for a large base as to put an extra disincentive to doing this but not actually prevent it. I would suggest you home brew an Upgrade Card that allows you to play a captured ship, is considered unique and takes the title upgrade slot to play.

Using the Legends EU, if you houserule ships, limit the rebels to the ISD mk1. IIRC old fluff was they rebuilt captured mk1's, but mk2's were too expensive to fix. I've wanted to do this and do special titles for Emancipator and Liberator. I am also getting all the extra stuff from shapeways (have a neb-B2 and RSF Mk1 already) so maybe I'm just weird that way.

This honestly sounds like a good fun narrative event.

If/when we get a full spoiler of the MC80 Liberty -Class Battlecruiser, you might want to use an ISD as a thematic proxy.

Errant Venture! First thing I did when I got my ISD was paint it red and run it as a rebel Capitol ship.

I have sort of found myself in the same boat as the original poster, in many ways.

I thought I'd bump this topic to ask what people's opinions were on using Old Republic-era capital ships with the distinctive SD arrowhead shape to proxy for various Rebel ships? I think this would be pretty lore-friendly, possibly even moreso than using captured ISDs or VSDs.

In particular I was interested in the possibilities of the Arquitens-class light cruiser, which I know are available in a few places online in Armada-like scales. They might make for a good equivalent to the CR90 corvette, being roughly the same size and serving similar roles.

I have a Neb-B2 that I fly as a GSD, and have plans on getting a Lancer (raider), Vindicator Crusier and Immobilizer 418 (interdictor) and a Dreadnaught (Vic 1/ RAF). I say go with what ever you want. I can't think of anything that would cause a problem unless you want to play official FFG events. They usually require you use the actual ship model. But otherwise, go crazy.

Honestly, my opinion has always been this - in tournaments or large events with an open invitation to anyone, stick to the rules. In casual play, as long as you discuss it with your opponent beforehand, do whatever the hell you think will be fun! As long as you and your opponent consider the ramifications of having one faction's ships playing with the other faction's Commanders. An ISD wouldn't be too bad right now (except maybe with Rieekan), but an ISD with Madine? Yeesh.

Buy an ISD, paint it red and call it Errant Venture ;) There you have your Rebel ISD.

I'm pretty familiar with the old EU, and I've never seen a comment like that. Do you have a reference?

I'll have to do some digging. Most of my books and such is still in storage (recently moved home from the military)

As far as I remember the Rebellion did not have any star destroyers up to the point of the Battle of Endor. They captured there three, which were unable to jump FTL, if my memory serves right. But prior that the Rebellion did not have the resources to operate an ISD or even a VSD simply because they had no access to replacement parts.

However, there are some sources which state that the early Rebellion used then-outdated Venators before they were destroyed/replaced by MC cruisers.

Old Legends was they Captured 2 at Endor. The Accusar and Adjudicator became the Emmancipator and Liberator respectively. The Adjudicator was badly damaged and the Accusar was mostly intact (Han and commandos put on high ranking imp unfiorms, flew up in the Tydirium and set of the abandon ship alarm).
