Let's talk a out bombs/mines

By Goseki1, in X-Wing

I can't go past Seismics. Cheap, efficient and no action required. Have caught a few people off guard with a cheeky seismic. I also like the decisions that need to be made if one of your own fellas is going to get caught in the blast. Is the 1 dmg on my fella worth the one on theirs?

Two bombers dropping them on the K-turn has worked well for me too.

my gripe about mines vs bombs is the action. Everything that has bomb slots also has a slew of other options, which makes it very **** expensive to just be a bomb boat. Bombs dont take an action, but theyre not always viable because if the opponent was planning to disengage they will miss, while he'd still fly over most mines. That being said, i do far more damage with a 2pt seismic than i ever do with a 4pt cluster mine. Mostly because i can just drop the seismic whenever, while i need to make sure i dont need the action for the mine: and 9/10 of the time i do. Decimator is probably the only ship with a bomb slot im not that hurt about losing his action for, but hes so expensive i cant justify putting pricy mines/bombs on him (seismic is all i ever put on him).

I feel like mines should be less end damage but guaranteed damage. Like each cluster only does 1 damage but you dont roll for it. Ive had people fly through all 3 because i placed it like a boss and took 0 damage....fu dice lol

I did a "just for fun" run recently. Not even remotly commpetative, and deffinitly a 1 time thing, but super funny.

Yeah I was really disappointed a few days ago with mines that barely did any damage due to good rolls by my opponent.

I agree about liking Bombs to Mines. It's the whole action that I don't like. I will say that Deathfire will be pretty interesting, though. Not having to do the action to drop it will be nice.

First thing to know is you want to put Mines (Proximity Mines, Connor Net, Cluster Mines) on LOW PS ships and Bombs (Proton Bombs, Seismic Charges, Thermal Detonators) on HIGH PS ships.

I understand the reasoning, but I have used Seismic Charges on my PS 2 Tie Bombers for awesome effect. Not everyone can Boost or Barrel Roll. Even if they can, it might save you for a couple of turns while someone has to reposition to get into a good spot.

My best job with Seismic was at a tournament last year (before Extra Munitions). I was playing vs. Leebo and...Coran? I moved up to grab the TL, but didn't have a shot on Leebo. I knew he was going to bank around to be right where I was just due to knowing what HLC Outriders do. I dropped all my Seismic and did a 5 K-turn. He landed on all 4 Seismic Charges! He didn't want to BR out of the way as I would be out of range at that point. So, he just took it. He finished off one Bomber, but two missiles killed Leebo in that one turn. I burned Leebo down in one round with those bombs!

Bombs work on any PS, but they are slightly harder to use on low PS because you need to predict. Usually this isnt a problem for me unless i forget that i drop a bomb when i reveal my dial, not when i move :P lost a few games because i forgot to drop it when i could have gotten 2-3 ships in it.

Mines dont necessarily need to be on a low PS either. Mines go off instantly if you drop them on a ship, ive flown past ships with my bomber and drumped a clustermine right on them, exploding all 3 immediately. He moved first and even boosted into position, which wouldnt have happened if i went first.

I will probably run Deathfire a lot purely because he can drop mines for free. Question is, which mine would be best? Not really a fan of Connernets because of the same reason i dislike Ionbombs - its really **** hard to use them and capitalize on the ion effect.

Proximity Mines.

you dont need to capitalize on the ion effect for nets, just action denial + damage will ruin fools

against large ships, they'll just take themselves out of the fight for a few rounds

I've tried to use bombs before, couldn't quite get the knack for em so I left em on the back burner. At my stores escalation game, I came across a bomb lover. We where at the 120pt range, I had 3 bug zappers, palob in the hwk, and boba. My opponent had 2 fully equipped kwings, one being miranda. Now I love miranda, I'm well aware of how tough it is to kill her so I focused her down with my whole squad. My opponent, through the use of slam, managed to get past my entire fleet, taking little dmg in the process. I performed k turns and hard turns and followed in hot pursuit,...right behind the mega bomber. Now, I managed to hit her with an ion from the hwk, guaranteeing her flying off the board. But before she did, she dropped a Proton. 2 full health zs dropped to direct hits, the 3rd a major hull breach. The hwk, who took 2 hits previously from a tlt, received a major explosion that led to another direct hit. 1 bomb, 4 ships. Boba managed to eat the remaining k, but I kept getting hit by seismics and ended the game with 1 hull left. Now this guy plays miranda with Sabine, and 2 bombing ywings. With that squad he won the latest store tournament. Bombs are powerful, I'm trying desperately to learn them lol

I love this kamikaze lad. The terror and horror it inspires to my opponents is amazing. And is not too expensive, "just" 27 points.

not much more satisfying than watching Tycho line up to drop in behind your ps2 unit of bombers and watching the horror on his face when you drop the second of the turn. He knows there are 4 more to come. He knows right were he will end up. And he knows Tycho will be dead. No dice need be rolled. Just pick him up and put him on the side. Managed to do this once, and it is still one of my best memories. Watching the TO go up and down the line showing the picture of it to people and hearing the "OOOOHHHHHHHHH!" reaction. Sad for the guy flying Tycho but it was memorable.

I took bombs on my IGs at my first tournament in January. No having FCS or autothrusters meant I had points to spare. They did admirable work. The best one was when someone parked Ello just behind my IG to get his range one shot, which was shaken off by green dice. When I advanced sensored a prox min followed by a sloop and those dice came up crit-crit-hit he was aghast. Ello died in one turn to that IG, with the prox mine combined with the shots that followed.

I also had fun dropping a seismic and doing a 1 forward when Soontir was in hot pursuit. I'd pretested this idea, and any bump guaranteed a hit on the follower, but nothing for my IG. The following turn, I advanced sensor dropped a prox mine from the other IG between 2 asteroids while Scourge was chasing it, he went poof.

Bombs are fun! Though I'm not sure IGs are the best platform, as there's so much else they can do with those points, but it lead to really funny reactions from people as they remembered my IGs had bombs aboard.

Sabine is hilarious. I just killed two TIEs with one Conner Net because of her! My list for the advanced bomb-lover:

Miranda Doni (51)
K-Wing (29), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), C-3PO (3), Conner Net (4), Proton Bombs (5), Advanced SLAM (2)

Esege Tuketu (49)
K-Wing (28), Twin Laser Turret (6), Extra Munitions (2), Sabine Wren (2), Conner Net (4), Proton Bombs (5), Advanced SLAM (2)

Deathrain, advanced sensors, extra munitions, proximity mines, and ion bombs. The prox mines are great to create a nice fence, and then ion bombs are great to assure shots for quite a while. My last game I had the good fortune to ionize most of the ships on the table--but since my ties were corralling the scum I'd been chasing all evening it became a simple matter of shooting fish in a barrell. It makes for an expensive build, but it is super fun when it works out.

I also wouldnt say Deathrain isn't a competitive pilot/ship combo, especially since it almost always draws immediate attention for the enemy, and that makes for a nice setup to a killbox. It hurts to watch that gigantic box of munitions go down, but it is beautiful to see the enemy scrambling to get out of the line of fire from his escort.

I want to do a games night with friends that emulates some Goldeneye. Make it Bombs only, that you can only do damage by bombs, bombs are unlimited but it takes an action to reload them (to avoid a million mines on the table.)

I've been having a lot of luck with a bomber K-Wing. Sabine crew is just nasty (what's that? my own ship just flew over my mine? take 1 damage. :P ). SLAMing then Advanced SLAM to drop a mine is awesome, but take some getting used to visualizing where you need to be and how to get there. I think the fun/funniest part, though, is the list as a whole spends a lot of turns firing 0-1 shots, but still manages to win more than lose.

Oh dear lord. I used to love mines on good old goldeneye. Cover a map with proximity mines and hide.
