Advice on which expansion to get next

By Melgrin, in Talisman

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get people's advice. I currently have the reaper, the highlands, the city, the woodlands, the harbinger, and the neather realm expansions. I have read about the other expansions extensively and know that I want to get the dungeon expansion to complete the four corners, and because I really like the spells and characters, and I feel in our current games we have no place to go in the late game to bulk up. My question is this: do I really need the sacred pools and/or frostmarch? I'm not crazy about the alternate endings, and I don't feel the need to have the characters (although a couple look kinda interesting), and the adventure cards don't seem to add much that isn't already in the other expansions, but the spells seem to be really good (basically the only part of both expansions I think would be really good are the spells).

Also, what do people think about the deep realms? It seems really cool to me, but a little too expensive considering all you get is like 20 cards and 6 extra board spaces. Thoughts?

Thank you all very much as always; this is a great community.

I would say that the Sacred Pool is a DEFINITE to get because it helps to even out the alignments with new Followers and Objects (Especially the Neutral alignments with Lawbringer, Equinox and Staff of Balance.)

Blood Moon too!

The Sacred Pool actually has an awful lot of good Adventure cards, but none of the Spells there are impressive; you certainly won't be missing out on anything by passing on the SP Spell cards.

Frostmarch, on the other hand, has Toadify and the game-changing Hydra Spell; you'll definitely feel the lack of those Spells if you don't have them. Frostmarch also has fifteen, and only fifteen in my opinion, worthwhile Adventure cards. See my review here for more details: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1491279/frostmarch-slog-through-slush

I'd advise passing on the Bloodmoon; the Graverobber and Doomsayer characters are the only really worthwhile components there, aside from the Fire Giant, Wall of Fire and Doom Sword adventure cards.

As for the Deep Realms, are you going to be playing Talisman with the City and Dungeon boards a fair amount? If so, Deep Realms is definitely worth the cost. You're right, there are only about forty cards, but they've packed a terrific amount of coolness into such a small deck.

I couldn't help but notice that you didn't mention Firelands. If you're ever in the mood for a truly superlative expansion which offers a greatly increased challenge, Firelands is definitely the expansion for you.

I own all of the expansions except for Nether Realm (which I won't be getting). I love all of them. Each one adds a unique flavor to the game. Playing with all of them combined is a lot of fun, provided you have people willing to explore all over.

In other words, don't fret about which one to get. You will enjoy it. If you want the fourth corner, get the Dungeon. If you want new components added to the game, go for one of the small box expansions.

Thank you all! lots of good advice!

I think dungeon to start with now.... and, Solan, you make a good point about the toadify and hydra spells... perhaps eventually I will get frostmarch and sacred pool, we'll see...

However, I'm pretty sure I won't be getting firelands, blood moon, and dragon expansions, because from what I have read they each tend to dominate the game a little too much, and I already feel like there is a lot of fun variety added to the game with the harbinger expansion (and I am trying to hit a good balance between having enough balance and variety while trying to buy as few of the expansions as possible).

With regards to Osbo25's comment on the nether realm expansion, I just want to point out that, although I love the large expansions, my favorites are probably harbinger and nether realm. All three of the nether realm endings are my personal favorite and when my friends and I play revealed variant, we usually pick one of these endings.

Thanks again everyone!

You're most welcome! And given that I helped Beta test Harbinger and feel it got depressingly little love around here, I'm thrilled to hear it's one of your favorite expansions :D !

Too bad. I actually LOVE Harbinger! It cranks the difficulty up a bit and I do like the biblical theme to it.

I own all of the expansions except for Nether Realm (which I won't be getting).

:(

sacred pool has the strongest spells in all the game, especially if you're a min 1/2 type of caster. People have a bad tendency to hold on to spells till the perfect moment which as a caster makes you very weak.

Im also not too fond of the alignment theme.

Frostmarch is much more balanced like main game, it doesnt bring much to the table, just more of the same - which can be good;)

although it has fewer negative cards and fewer strongly beneficial cards, the teleports add a little player interaction and imo could be more common in the game generally

Dungeon: It's purpose is simply to act as the place to go when you hit strength 8 or so to speed up getting to 12+ and win - it also allows you to completely bypass inner region most games.

There, there. Plenty of us Talisman players, especially the old second edition vets, appreciate Nether Realm for the excellent expansion it is (best of the optional endings, in my opinion :) ).

I've been having a blast playing Nether Realm on the Digital Edition. Pandora's Box and The Gauntlet have become two of my favorite alternate endings!

Nether Realm was on sale for the D.E. (I never purchased whatever it is that automatically gives me all of the updates.)

Just so you know, I bought it.

I'm unimpressed with the Pandora's Box or the Gauntlet endings, seeing as the expansion only comes into play at the end of the game. I like The Hunt. I can't tell you how many times I got rid of an unpleasant enemy only to find one even more unpleasant. Frustrating as that is, there is a sense of satisfaction in going back and killing it later.

I swear I'm not too late, anyway there's my 2 cents :)

-Blood Moon: it adds a lot of new mechanics, but I didn't like them too much. The reason is... they aren't well implemented in the game, because the bonus/malus from the Day/Night card is pretty invasive and hard to justify (I can understand SOME creatures are susceptible to day/night, but not ALL creatures in the game... could be very funny with a specific typology of Enemies got buffed/nerfed by day cycle, but I digress...), while the Lycanthropy appears to be a mere buff during the Night than a real threat.

But this expansion is FULL of highly themed Adventure Cards, so if you wish to buy it someday (maybe this Halloween?) I suggest to add some "home rules". Maybe let the Day/Night changer making effect only on Spirits (it makes sense, didn't it? Spirits are stronger during night but weaker 'cause of daylight...), and create new rules for Lycanthropy... in the end, you can even add more "endings" with an Halloween theme, because Blood Moon is really well themed with this in mind.

-The Dragon: another "game changer" expansion who requires a lots of change to be appreciated, in my hopinion. The dragon themed decks are really cool but too "chained" to the new dragon tokens, who's a really boring and complicated mechanics that don't promote the new adventure decks.

The 'Dragon Tower' who replace the Inner Region has a lot of charm, and I suggest to use it but with modified dragon decks (there are some idea over the internet :D ), like it was the Dragon Tower from 3rd edition of Talisman.
