Yeah the models are pretty crap from what I've seen and I've not played it but I have played wizkids games before so I fully believe the balance sucks.
Which is a shame as I'm a trekie, I crew up with tng and would of played if it was a better product.
the models are crap and the scale is all wrong.....
Why did they release the Khiraxz in X-wing? It's clearly a Klingon design.
UH-OH...

I LOVE TREK BTW, and I have a complete collection IN Scale... took two years but I have all of the important ships now... well most of 'em.
I am going to ARMADA up some rules for STAW at some point.
Bout 50 of you Star Brahs actually went and looked too...

Personally, I would love for MajorJuggler to glance over some of the Attack Wing stuff with his model. Just to see how bad it is.
Star Trek Attack Wing feels like it has similar mechanics because they have licensed the mechanics from FFG
Sadly, they jumped the gun by a couple of years. The X-Wing game mechanic is entirely ill-suited to Star Trek. The Armada mechanic is what the Star Trek theme is begging for.
As others have said, they also have con and tournament exclusives that are almost always overpowered and out of balance
The miniatures for Star Trek Attack Wing are very, very sadly inferior to those of X-wing, in most cases. A few look pretty decent in sculpt (not many), but almost all have poor paint applications. Most of the sculpts are less detailed than the old Star Trek MicroMachines. Scale is a joke. The Klingon D7 is around twice the length of Kirk's Enterprise, for example. The rules do a poor job of representing capital ship combat, as one could anticipate given that the rules are made for dogfighting.
Personally, I've used the Attack Wing miniatures to get some ships I couldn't find good versions of elsewhere for use with a set of rules and ship charts I found online applying the B5Wars engine to Star Trek. But, really, that's all Attack Wing seems good for: it provides ship miniatures for otherwise unavailable ships.
Just my two cents.
Quoted this for truth...I was VERY disappointed in the ST:AW game ![]()
I go to bed and pray every night that FFG will acquire the Star Trek license from "That Company Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned" and make an Armada style game for Star Trek. Trek isn't meant to be on the flightpath system.
What's Star Trek?
It's what Star Wars would be if it tried to be scientific, didn't have the Force, there was no Dark Side and no Empire or First Order.
Everyone is happy and gets along. With the happy tranquility occasionally interrupted by grumpy Klingons or cyborg zombies called Borg. Really without Klingons, Borg or Dominion it would be really boring.
The two newest movies are awesome though. Less buddy buddy and more pew pew pew.
I'm sure you knew the answer and were being cheeky but thought I'd answer anyway
Eww, get your JJ trek outta here!
I'll stick with some good old First Contact or Undiscovered Country, good action while still having a good story and not just flashy effects.

Wrath of Khan is best
Better than JJ and the Next Gen. Though First Contact is a very close second. I've not seen Undiscovered Country in years but that is a third favourite.
I understand the JJ hate for Star Trek. I thought it was going to be an origins story, not an erase and reboot. But I still think the film's are awesome ON THEIR OWN. But among the Star Trek proper they are bad.
I would love to see an alternate Star Trek dealing with the first human interstellar colonization attempts, call it ST: Warp One. No other human or races or any races that are about as advanced as Earth, either alien contact is digging up artifacts that are millions of years old or meeting either God-like beings far in advance of humanity or just dumb animals. A bit more realism. Any politics would come from humans on different worlds trying to be independent of earth and searching for their own culture and identity in the Galaxy. So you could a Star Fleet but any Federation would be a long time coming. That would have to wait for at least Warp Five.
Seeing as this thread is STILL going I thought it appropriate to lay out some of my Trek musings.
What's Star Trek?
It's a good space series, arguably better than that Firefly tripe that completely ripped off Cowboy Bebop's premise.

Take a look at Federation Commander, or if that's a bit too heavy, Talon.

IMHO, actually, I don't even think 'Armada' is the right fit for it. While I think WizKids whiffed badly using X-Wing as the model, I feel kinda like Armada would be equally wrong - in the other direction. Ships in Star Trek don't generally 'zoom around' like X-Wing fighters, but neither do they basically saddle up next to each other and slug it out like in Armada.
Have you played 'Sails of Glory'? Here's an overview vid...
...IMHO, how the "crew actions" are assigned feels a lot more (to me) like how Star Trek handles energy. So I could see energy allocation to shields that way...or boosting a phaser attack...or repairing damage. And I like how the ship has a damage track that reflects gradually reduced capabilities as it takes hits - that DEFINITELY feels like Star Trek, to me (and something else Armada basically lacks). So...if WizKids were to have licensed a system, that one would have been my choice.
Personally, I would love for MajorJuggler to glance over some of the Attack Wing stuff with his model. Just to see how bad it is.
That would be pretty interesting.
Stay far, far away.
I used to play STAW. Ugh. It's just one absurd, broken combo after another.

I know... i do not hate the thing but boy-howdy is it ever WAYyyy over-dam-hyped!!!

Very bold talking about startrek to starwars fans. They rarely mingle lol (though i admit i prefer the plot/technology/ships of startrek, but xwing is superior in every way).
StarTrek Attack Wing has a lot of issues. Models are terrible, scale is completely shot, mechanics feel very random, lot of really overpowered ships too. Theres a reason that game is dying down. My FLGS actually put up a 35% off on Startrek/DND Attack Wing to try and get rid of their stock - they literally sold nothing lol.

I love my ST and SW. ST will always be more to me because I was exposed to it first, but SW is of course a masterpiece as well. I'm a Trwarsie ![]()
The game plays well enough. The scale just isn't there and as stated before the paint jobs lack a lot. It is made by Wiz-Kids . All I can say is stick to X-Wing because there just isn't enough interest in Star Trek to find people to play with.
To be fair Star Trek cinematographers placed aesthetic spectacle over proportional consistency so in Star Trek the scale isn't as rock solid as one might think. Although it is easier for Star Wars to keep scale consistent as they only had 3 movies and not hundreds of episodes.
not giving Wizkids a free pass, they could have put the Galaxy and D'Drex on a large base and make the D'Drex larger than the galaxy class but Star Trek ships can't be locked to scale the same way X-wing is because there is no scale.
