Jake Farell and Inquistor shenanigans question

By Oldpara, in X-Wing

Jake has ability to make free boost/barell roll action when he gets Focus. Inquistor has ability to make free Evade action after he gets Target Lock.

Are they able to perform those free actions as a third action using PTL? Or are they limited because of stress taken form PTL and those free actions needs to be taken as second?

Ie:

1. Jake takes focus, make barell roll from ability then makes boost from PTL and takes the stress. 3 actions.

2. Jake makes boost, then he makes Focus action form PTL, then he gets stress so no additional free action. Only 2 actions.

I am curious, because I've seen lot of Inquistors with TL and Evade after they performed Boost or Barell roll to get range. Never argued, but I have second thoughts :)

The free action and the stress from PtL occurred simultaneously, so you choose the order they happen. If you chose to receive the stress first, then you couldn't do the free action, so generally you choose the action first :)

If you had a ship with PtL and Experimental Interface, you could trigger PtL for a second action, then trigger EI off that 2nd action as well. Then the stress from PtL and EI would both resolve, and you'd have three actions and two stress.

Isn't the order forced by the PTL card description? ;) "make action then receive stress token" not "make action, check shenanigans then receive stress token" :) It feels like one card is interrupted by another in the middle, not one is after another.

Dunderwood is correct. They activate at the same time so you choose the order.

This is from the FAQ , page 15:

Q: If a player has multiple effects that resolve at the same time, can he resolve them in any order?
A: Yes.

Jake takes a boost action. Then he uses PtL to Focus. There are two effects that happen after he takes this Focus action.
1. His pilot ability allows him to take a free barrel roll action.
2. Push the Limit gives him a stress token.

Jake's player is allowed to choose the order that those effects resolve.

Thx for the clarification.

I thought that the "after you do X" trigger was strictly before the "do X, then" trigger. Now I'm not sure whether or not I'm crazy.

There were several threads dealing with "Nested actions" and their consequences. They were awile ago so you'll have to some digging.

This nesting can get a little strange. In Jake's case it might go like this:

1) FOCUS, which triggers his ability

2) BARREL ROLL, which triggers PTL

3) TARGET LOCK, from PTL

4) STRESS, from PTL

5) ASSIGNED A FOCUS, from an outside source. Legal even with stress.

This all happened AFTER movement. It gets even weirder if something triggers actions BEFORE movement like BB-8. Reveal a green maneuver, which triggers BB-8 free Barrel Roll, which triggers PTL, do another action, gain stress, do green maneuver, remove stress, perform third action and have no stress.

I have done the following in a game using Jake with Kyle Katarn piloting a HWK-290 and Jan Ors as crew:

Jake takes a Focus action, the token is changed to an Evade token with Jan Ors, boost using Jake's pilot ability (he still took the Focus action even if he got an Evade token). Then, at the start of combat, Kyle passes Jake a Focus token, allowing Jake to perform a Barrel Roll action, which then triggers PtL allowing him to Evade. Jake boosted and barrel rolled—dodging an arc from a higher PS pilot—and has a Focus token and two Evade tokens. It's pretty fun dodging arcs with a PS 7 pilot facing PS 9, 10, or 11. (The difficulty is that Kyle Katarn then becomes a prime target.)

5) ASSIGNED A FOCUS, from an outside source. Legal even with stress.

I'm pretty sure you can not do a free action while stressed.

Correct. But someone assigning you a token does not i volve you taking an action.

Think that's why he said assigned and outside source. Being assigned a token is different from performing an action, free or otherwise and can be done even if the receiving ship is stressed.

That is just evil! I love it! I am constantly amazed at the combinations players come up with. I never would've come up with this!
