I used to read a lot more than I do now. Over the years I've either gotten bored with them, or they've just plain ended.
There's only, like, 4 left that I read regularly. And I only takes me, like, 15 minutes to read them each week.

Is that supposed to be funny or something?
I suppose if you're putting out a strip every day most of then have to suck.
Sometimes I wonder just what has gone wrong in your life that makes you such a sourpuss.
Then I remember that I don't care.
Heh, not X-Wing, but still FFG:

Penny arcade is garbage and only slightly better than ctrl alt del, in that both confuse references and violence for punchlines.

The difference between CAD and PA, well, differences, are two things.
1: It's the characters that are weird, not the creator, for PA. Tim Buckley is one weird guy, and not in a good way.
2: PA is at least informed.
Funny, reading the first pages of Catalyst and I was reminded about post 45 when I read (referring to a person lost in thought) that he had withdrawn to his private hyperspace.

Uh.
References and violence CAN be punchlines. The Three Stooges, for violence, or the old Marx Brothers, for references? Or the old-school Looney Tunes for both?
The problem with doing references as punchlines is that it dates them; who gets Bugs Bunny's "You may fire when ready, Gridley" line without doing some major research, for example? Also, that violence does get boring.
Weird thing is that none of the strips referenced in this thread fulfill your complaint about references/violence , and yet you're still kvetching about it. Seems rather like...well... you don't have much of a leg to stand on.
It's been years since I last read anything from Penny Arcade. Barely recognized the art; the style did get a lot worse indeed.
I haven't read PA in forever, either. And yeah, the new style is really off-putting for me, too.
Take note, no table flipping or Joe will kill my asses.
NO! NO!!, NOT THE DONKEY!!!

Not many. But if you care, you do the research to get the reference, and then you're a better person for it. Because now you know a thing/had an experience you didn't have before.

And as someone whose favorite punchlines number among those which are references, I'll admit that I like them.
However, references are jokes with a sell-by date, and should be used sparingly at best. Darkwing Duck's exaggerated ego and extreme cowardice when everything doesn't go exactly right are timeless; Dolly Parton sitting down next to Pinky and Brain is a head-scratcher for anyone who didn't grow up in the 1980s.
But the thing about Penny Arcade is that it is all about the NOW of gaming. Naturally they're going to have jokes where references are the punchline. It's definitely worthwhile to post relevant comics on a forum related to that game.
A reference isn't a joke, but you're joke can include a reference.
"thing is bad, like the Phantom menace" is a reference that lacks a punchlines.
"thing is the Phantom menace of whatever" is a joke that includes a reference.
Oh, and the art of Cad, and the abortion arc, and Buckley himself.
