I really don't like the way Gabe's art style has evolved over the years. "Cold nose" as I like to call it (characters have noses that look like they have a bad cold) always turns me off.

Hey, it still looks way better than it did when it started. But yeah, I also think the art style evolved "too far". It feels like Gabe just wanting to add detail for the sake of adding detail.

Mostly this. Tycho is the writer. Gabe is the artist. Gabe cares about the way things look. Tycho cares about how they function.

tl;dr background - Gabe (black haired dude) is the artist of the comic strip, and does the art. He likes...art. And artistic stuff. And finds words boring and takes-too-long-to-read and skips past dialog in video games to get to more art. Tycho (brown haired dude) is the writer of the comic strip, and does all the writing. He loves classical literature, because it has no meaningless art to distract anyone from the SO IMPORTANT WORDS. He likes words. And thinks artists are stupid and waste time doing things that aren't making more words .
