Is wave 4 really wave 4 or wave 3.5?

By cynanbloodbane, in Star Wars: Armada

So with the weird SKU issues of wave 3, is wave 4 really wave 4 or wave 3.5?

I ask, because an interesting idea just occurred to me. At worlds, someone supposedly cornered an FFG employee, who allegedly reported that they were at work on wave 4.

Is this "that" wave 4, or is this wave 4 just wave 3 split in half...

Fun thought. Wave 5 could be closer than we think. :D

Probably were split so they can get something out for us before some lose interest in the game.

Given that these SKUs were definitely the missing SKUs from SKUGate (#neverforget #wewillperservere) then I think that this was probably all intended to be the same thing.

My wallet is happy to call it wave 4.

It's probable that they were designed and tested together, and some combination of reasons made them decide that the Flotillas needed to release first. It's also worth noting that both Wave 4 products are still not even listed as In Development in the upcoming page, so they may still be tinkering with card mechanics and fleet point costs.

So it could be that in addition to the supply chain issues we know they've had, FFG could simply have decided that the Flotillas were a complete game experience ready to ship and Wave 4 still needs certain mechanics or upgrades finalized to feel right. Obviously they have the models, packaging and card artwork mostly finished from a design standpoint.

It was probably wave 3 and some disaster struck and now it's split.

Let's see:

SKU 16 Interdictor, wave 4

SKU 17 Liberty, wave 4

SKU 18 Gozanti, wave 3

SKU 19 GR-75, wave 3

I'm not a seer, so I can't say for sure, but there is something mighty fishy about those SKU numbers. As if millions of game designers suddenly cried out in terror and were silienced :D

The two ships most requested after Wave 2 launched were overwhelmingly the Interdictor/Immobilizer and the Liberty Class. With few film ships left to do, the choice was probably pretty darn clear. But both probably needed a lot of careful thought to be really differentiated from other ships. Look at the discussions around how the Interdictor ought to work in the custom cards thread. There were puerile who thought it would be impossible to give them a purpose without creating entirely new missions to go with it.

I'm not at liberty to discuss in depth, but the difference in wave numbers involved a lengthy car chase, high seas piracy, and a ham sandwich being held hostage.

Dude, you forgot the threat to run over Sam Stewart with a Zamboni. :D

I rather prefer to think of Wave 4 as Wave 3 and Wave 3 as Wave 3.5... Let's be honest here, if they'd been released as one wave, it would be the Interdictor and the Liberty getting all of the attention. Y'all know it's true. The space vans would always have been the "also-rans" of the release announcement.

I'm pretty sure they split the wave up due to supply issues, it makes sense from all corners of business. You don't really need to look hard on this board to see the posts about Armada dying.

So as an FFG exec, you have to:

1.) keep your customer base happy

2.) provide product to keep them playing

3.) keep the non tourny crowd interested

4.) interest them with things to come

Flotillas was and still is a fantastic idea, and I recently used it as an example in my marketing class, got an A for it (thanks FFG!) They had a piece of plastic that was used for another game, and they easily converted it over to this one...and flat out killed a flock of birds with one stone.

"Wave 4" is the company finally being caught up, and now teasing is heavily...but that aside outside of the SSD, which I personally think will happen sooner or later, there isn't much to put into the game.

*insert shameless Venator plug here*

Is Wave 4 really Wave 1.3?

Yep...we've been talking about it down the club and we suspect the wave was split due to manufacturing capacity/limitations. So they went down the route of getting the easiest to produce expansions out quickly while they paint up the more complex ones.

Effectively it's wave 3.5, but it's all semantics anyways. It's more plastic spaceships and that's what's important.

I think that wave 4 was supposed to be wave 3, but they delayed wave 4 because they could not figure out how to make the interdictor work in a way that was thematically appropriate to SW and also useful in Armada.

Therefore, they began production on the flotillas and waited a few more months to finish play testing the interdictor.

I feel like they split wave 3 to get out something early.

No complaints here, Wave 4 is a good Christmas Treat, as it will come out proby in last week of Nov after being delayed.......

Have faith my Aramadians....all will be set right.

Separatists have gathered in the mustafar system, I'm going there to end this war....wait for me to return.

Do.

Not.

Care.

Having to find the money for it all....

.....That's all I care about right now.

I agree it is most likely that they split wave 3, but I'm just not sure if they split wave 3 before or after worlds.

Is the original wave 4 in development, but now bumped to wave 5?

It was probably wave 3 and some disaster struck and now it's split.

Yeah and FFG did the best they could so we have two little waves instead. I am fine with it.

:)

I think it isn't important one way or the other.

I really think with supply issues they didn't want to commit to the release of the bigger items until they had the production confirmed. If people are screaming "Armada is dead!" when they hear nothing, think what a delayed release would have done. If the size is the same, there should be a large Imperial and medium rebel ship left in the pipe. Maybe those weren't assigned sku's or maybe they weren't ever planned, but it would fit with the balanced wave structure from wave 2.

Yeah I think this is a non issue. Does it matter? I hope they stick with the 6 month release too. I think that keeps the game fresher (more fresh) than a yearly release.

I know folks like a stream of new things but I'm often not finished with the last new things when more come down the line. Smaller releases always seems better to me. But I guess that is the trick with this sort of thing these days. Enough stuff at the right pace.
