I think I'm in love....., with Dengar

By charlesanakin, in X-Wing

Yeah, but then I'd have to buy the Hounds Tooth. :) Maybe that would be reason enough to try it.

The Houndstooth is solid and can be a lot of fun. It's also one of the Scum ships that will dynamically improve anytime Scum packs introduce new crew -- the ability to take three means it IS a swiss army knife.

A YV-666 and JumpMaster list goes a long way to covering the YV-666's weakness -- its inability to turn around quickly. I always run them with EU, assuming I don't plan on running them as suicide boats, and they're lethal.

My favorite build is:

"Fett-Ex"

YV-666 (Any Pilot, though Bossk has a bonus)

Boba Fett

Greedo

Zuckuss

You can add whatever you want to flavor, but this setup WILL deliver Boba to an enemy ship. If you're running Moralo Eval, grab an HLC. Bossk, grab a Mangler. It's a fun build.

I'd like to find a Dengar build that doesn't have another Jumpmaster in it. I've only got one and don't plan on buying a 2nd.

Iggy B with Mindlink, FCS, HLC, Feedback Array, Autothrusters.

IG-88 B might be a good option. I've barely run my IG's at all. I'll have to think about Mindlink. Might be good. Might try something else. Cool. Thanks!

Yeah....I think you are right. I'll probably pick up the Hounds Tooth one day. I just....wasn't interested in it much. Not that I thought it was bad. I think you are right about the crew, though. I think I just prefer small based ships most of the time. I just want to use Dengar.

We look forward to your compliance.

Both list have a 2 pt initiative bid to hopefully give Dengar move last shoot first on Whisper, Fel and non-VI Vader.

Never realized I'd been missing out on the world of moving last and shooting first.

I would love to hear what either list was running. So far, every Dengar I've build has looked great on paper but has ended up being torn apart.

I'd be glad to share that info:

The original list was:

Dengar-

Lone Wolf

Plasma Torp

R5-P8

Title

Zuckuss

Glitterstim

Countermeasures

Manaroo-

PTL

Unhinged

Recon Spec

Feedback Array

EU

My take is:

Dengar-

Lone Wolf

R5-P8

Title

Zuckuss

Glitterstim

Countermeasures

Manaroo-

PTL

Plasma Torps

Unhinged

Gonk

Feedback Array

EU

Both list have a 2 pt initiative bid to hopefully give Dengar move last shoot first on Whisper, Fel and non-VI Vader. I may still make changes but I really got what I wanted from the list the way I changed it.

The first version is 99 points I would know I ran it and got top 4 at the same regional as my buddy Jeff :P so why do you think the torps are better on manaroo?

So I moved the Torps to Manaroo for two reasons. First I found that sometimes she gets ignored due to low damage output. If someone flies all their ships straight at Dengar she can wade in but then Dengar loses Lone Wolf (a super valuable upgrade). The Torp give her a high damage option. Second her PTL allows her TL and focus on a target. And yes you can pass but TL and focus on Manaroo represents a serious threat (with Torp) and Dengar can still have 3 dice+Lone Wolf+ ability+focus. And Manaroo can use her focus if needed defensively if she doesn't like Torp option. That's been my observation/approach. Because neither have GC I just found Manaroo got more use out of it.

I'd like to find a Dengar build that doesn't have another Jumpmaster in it. I've only got one and don't plan on buying a 2nd.

I'm with PGS on this one. As nice as the Houndstooth it's I think it performs much better in a three ship list than in a two ship list. Once you're in behind it it's hard to recover. My favorite version of the HT is the budget one. Though if flown with Dengar you'd have to go Zuckuss, 4-LOM and Gunner or Boba because Dengar isn't available. I've really enjoyed the times I've used AM and both the IG and the J5K have plenty of greens.

My favorite build is:

"Fett-Ex"

YV-666 (Any Pilot, though Bossk has a bonus)

Boba Fett

Greedo

Zuckuss

That is actually Calvin's Bossk build, so, if you want to suggest it, we just need you to state that you stole the idea (as you couldn't possibly have come up with it independently) from Calvin and add a trademark symbol to each reference.

We look forward to your compliance.

Perfect.

I don't know who Jeff B is but as I stated I tweaked someone else list. If that was Jeff B then he has my kudos and personal thanks for a creative and amazing list. I wish I could take credit for it but I can't. I did make some changes of my own though. It's as fun a list as any I've ever used in X-Wing. So thank you to Jeff B or whoever you are that created that original list.

What is your list exactly?

EDIT: Lol didn't read the whole thread.

So what do the Plasma Torpedoes accomplish? Just Ghost insurance? Could one use Flechettes instead to stress things?

Also, how do you fly this build? Against say, Palp Aces do you use Manaroo as a blocker and Feedback Array troll? Do you just fly manaroo away all game and just feed Dengar focuses?

Opening turns do you start with a fortress? I want to know more about how this build works, it's so cool.

So I've found this list to be obscenely good vs Aces (though I've never not had initiative vs PS9). The Plasma Torp helps where it's weaker vs J15K or Ghost builds. Vs Palp Aces I like to send Manaroo straight for the Shuttle, fire Plasma Torps and burn it down as quickly as possible. And if the Aces don't have initiative they can't just turn their backs on Dengar. Plasma Torp is gold vs LS.

As for my approach I set up rocks like a picket fence in the middle to try to force opponents to weave through and take up more time. Then I place Manaroo in the left corner as far up as possible facing right. Dengar goes tight in the left corner. My goal is to get Manaroo 2-3 Gonks by flying parallel to your edge of the board. Then hopefully turn in and boost to sweep in for a flank attack when you get close to the right side of the board. Dengar does a 1 hard right and moves along behind Manaroo. I try to choose a number based on my opponents total attack dice capability and if his attack exceeds that number all on Dengar then I fire Countermeasures and pop Clitterstim. Lone Wolf is the key. It's such a valuable card for offense and defense. If you have Dengars arc, CM, GS, Lone Wolf and R5-P8 you can tank 9-10 dice usually without taking more than a couple of shields. It's truly awesome to behold. Not to mention you can destroy or severely cripple almost any ship in that exchange. Oh, I also use Manaroo as a meat shield. Vs ordnance let her take 2-3 shields cause she can use PTL And Gonk them back. She's deceptively hard to kill if you've Gonked properly at the start.

Dengar is disgusting and I hate him.

He us awesome though. Tore apart my Decimator/Vader the other day.

Eh, not sure what your own changes were, as your description sounds exactly like Jeff's Dengar.
omg let us all praise this Jeff guy for making a list.
Yeah I love how forever it will be "Jeff's Dengar". Everyone just assumes everyone knows this guy, Jeff.

you don't mess with the Jeff.

In my final iteration I swapped out EU for Proton Torps (instead of Plasma) with GC and EM. At times I thought it would be nice to have EU but Manaroo was too much of a non-threat offensively in the list. This gives her some significant punch. She can't be ignored.

To be fair, Jeff B makes most people's short list of "best X-Wing players in the world," and he's pretty renowned for his zany builds. It's kinda his schtick.

Who is Jeff B and why should he be on my short list of "best X-Wing players in the world".

Frankly, I wasn't even aware that I should have a list like that.

My favorite dash build is Jeff's dash.

My favorite peanut butter is Jeff's too.

What? It's Jif? Nevermind then.

You'll know Jeff when you keeeeep looking up to make eye contact. Watched him at Hoth and the MI Flat Land Games regional. His good friend/brother(?) spoke well of his coming up with the build and play testing it. It looked brutal. From lone wolf dash to lone wolf Dengar.

Ive been flying xizor as a wingman to dengar. I run dengar like superdash - ptl, k4, unhinged, engine, title and feedbak array. Xizor has vi, virago, fcs, autothrusters and flechette torpedoes. I havent actually run it yet with flechette on xizor, used to be cloaking device but i didnt use it enough to be worthwhile. Ive crushed palp aces the games ive played against it. The list is at 97 points so it usually sins the initiative bid, which i give to soontir if hes there. Both of my ships move after pretty much every imp ace except vader and can arcdodge to avoid shots. Dengar gets focus/tl every round and can still boost and/or br (or do both and still have TL). Feedback array means the aces dont want to be at range one of him (havent needed it much). The last matchup came down to xizor/soontir, which took a while but xizor won handily, partly due to fcs. The flechette torpedoes were an idea after that match. In a similar matchup i can drop the torpedoes on an already stressed ace to double stress them if i have a long range shot that isnt likely to hit with the primary.

As soon as the protectorate fighter comes out I plan to replace xizor with fenn rau for an even better sidekick to dengar. Fenns also cheaper, meaning i can have flechette on both ships and be at a 4 point init bid instead of 3

I have been trying out a Dengar and Manaroo build also after I saw one guy at league flying it. I did the same thing by copying and had to change it up to suit my needs. I see nothing wrong with doing that, as it has helped me develop as a player and list builder.

The Glitterstem is optional if you really need Initiative.
