Ship's Complement: Crew Break Downs

By Nevermind, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I just finished the first season with the EotE group I've been GMing for. It was a rough first season and more than half the original 8 PC crew got replaced through the course of the game, but I think the group is very solid now with the 6 Players that it has. Anyways, the crew started off with a beat up, half dead Gozanti-class Armed Transport that they fixed up and modified over the course of the first season. They did some pirating and some privateering for the Rebel Sector Force in the Nuiri Sector and made enemies with a rival pirate group. In the final battle though, they helped the Rebel Sector Force destroy or capture most of this rival pirate fleet. In the aftermath, the Rebel Commander offered them their choice of the captured ships. They decided to go with the biggest and most damaged one, a CR-90 Corellian Corvette (the other choice was a heavily modified Action VI transport). So we are now on a 'summer break' and plan on picking up season 2 next September.

Because of this I decided to draw up a Crew Break Down of the Ship's Complement they would be required to fill with NPCs. (No spoilers here if you're part of this group). I looked around for some examples and didn't find any. Since the configurations for a CR-90 can vary from between 30 - 165, I decided to just start filling up crew positions to see how many I'd get. The crew started off with these 7 Departments, which is what I based the ship's complement after: Navigation, Communications, Operations, Weapons, Assault, Medical, Engineering. Each Department had a number of NPCs that they are in charge of. The group started with a GM Captain, but after he died early in the season, a replacement captain was never put in place (the crew is a bit democratic now). So I'm looking for some feedback on what people think and if there are any recommendations for crew positions to add/change. Any constructive criticism is welcome. Thanks.

Here is the crew break down for the Gozanti-Class Armed Transport that they were using before. It had a retrofitted hangar bay where they stored a HWK-290 that was converted into a boarding party deliver ship.

Sounds good to me. Thanks! I’ll make sure to tell my GM about this thread. ;)

In any modern military crew there's multiple people for each position, a 'primary' or most experienced main watch crew and 2-3 'secondary' watches of less experienced but still fully capable crew members. You can (and frequently during the World Wars they did) get away with less, but this is considered the optimal amount. When I see a crew of 30-165 I see that as skeleton, barely functioning at 30 and full complement at 165.

So your CR-90 crew, double that and split it 3 ways and you'll have a rough 3-watch crew. Also, you're missing the First Officer (a must have, captain's have to sleep sometime!) and technically a Flight Officer tends to deal with air/spacecraft. Chief Navigator tends to be just that, Chief Navigator.

Admittedly this is limited to passing familiarity and no actual experience, so if anyone knows better please correct me!

@Brad - Thanks! I just found this!

@Exubitor - I hear you on the First Mate. I had one originally, but took it off after the Captain died. Might have to put him back in the mix for season 2. As far as the 3 separate watches, that's actually why I went with at least 3 crew members in each 'sub-department'. That way for example the Bridge would only need 3 crew members from the Navigation department during one of the watches where as Engineering would need at least 5 people. I don't think with all the automation on a ship like this it would need as many people on watch as like a WWII ship, but I see where you're coming from. I think it could be skeleton crewed by just ~18 crew members as long as they aren't flying it in combat or doing anything crazy. During combat, it would obviously be all hands on deck. If I remember correctly, Wraith Squadron from the X-wing series books crewed a Corvette with a lot less and got away with it, so it's feasible. I've been on ship before and (although I'm not a sailor) I can tell you the Navy is really skirting the line as far as under manning our big ships.

As far as the Gozanti goes, it only has a compliment of 12, so it'd be difficult to come up with 3 different watches for it when there are 3 major gun emplacements. Maybe they'll just have to do 12 hour watches. I've done it on deployment before, it's not unheard of. -.-

Wookiepedia states the minimum crew at 7 for the CR90. So yeah, a lot of automaton, but still needs people to make sure things get fixed and/or told what to do. For a modern comparison, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is roughly the same size, but with double the crew (just over 300). Actually, it makes me wonder if droids are even counted as 'crew' or if they only count crew towards beings that use life support and consumables.

Yeah I love Wraith Squadron and their corvette-carrier. Proof that Wedge can pilot anything! (seriously, 1 man crewed the **** Night Caller lol). So much shenanigans. So much explosive.

You might want to look at the Darkstryder Campaign from West End Games. It was based on a modified Corellian Corvette, and had both ship descriptions and crew duties if I remember. You can find it online. Try d6holocron

Second that you check out the Darkstryder Campaign. I think you'll find the detailed write-up for the ship decks, features and manning interesting and enlightening.

@Edgookin - Great resource for material. Thanks for mentioning it as I will probably pull some elements from those books. However, it doesn't seem to give a detailed breakdown of the entire crew and focuses more on the main cast of the 'Command Crew' and 'Support Crew', which is only a couple dozen individuals. It does describe that the ship as having an oversized crew for the amount of space on board, probably because of the extensive hangar bay modification. It says that there are 120 crew members who have 12 hour shifts, so 60 crew members on at all times. But again it doesn't go into the detailed break down I was looking for on how many to crew the bridge or engineering etc.

This does highlight though how I think that 165 is probably the maximum number of crew members that a CR-90 with a military configuration would take. With that many crew, you could have 55 crew members rotating on 3 different shifts, which should be more than enough if it is a military configuration. If it is a diplomatic, cargo transport, or passenger transport configuration, I think it would need less crew than that. There's only so many people you can fit on a ship that is 150 meters with 4 full decks, not to mention those giant engines.

The passenger transport configuration is likely the only one that can carry 600 passengers, and I see that configuration as more like a traditional airliner where most of the passengers only have their seats instead of their own rooms with facilities and 1st class cabins as necessary. Used mainly for shorter hyperspace trips within the same region that are likely under 24 hours. Or if they are longer trips between regions they will likely have several stops along the way to drop off/take on new passengers and let the ones who are going the full trip to get out and stretch their legs (just like long cross-country train trips!). My reasoning for that is take a typical Airbus model that carries 250 - 300 passengers and is about 60 - 70 meters long. There isn't enough space on a CR-90 to have cabins for all 600 passengers, or probably even half that number.

@Braendig - Nice work, thanks for sharing!

droid brains... that ship needs lots and lots of droid brains.

and droids.

Brains are gooey.

I'm currently running an FFG conversion of this campaign, so I'm intimately familiar with that flying jury rig of a ship.

The Gozanti isn't really a warship. It's an armed transport intended to operate amidst other transports. It's Sensor Range (Long) gives it the ability to track most opponents (commerce raiders/pirates) before they are in range to shoot, so it doesn't need to keep crews on the guns at all times. When hostiles are detected, it sounds the action stations alarm and the crews get to the weapons about the time most opponents are closing into range.

In addition, a Gozanti isn’t all THAT big, and so when the alarms do sound, it shouldn’t take too long to get to your battle station.

True enough. Depending on source, the Gozanti is only about 64 meters long. Even with two decks, that's (very, very roughly) about four times the interior space of the Millennium Falcon, and it has 4-6 times the crew.

That’s only slightly longer than a USN Cyclone-class Patrol Ship [1], which has a crew of four officers and 24 enlisted personnel.

So, with regards to the number of crew, I think the Gozanti is reasonable at 12, given the presumed advances in technology, etc….
