The State of Armada

By mcworrell, in Star Wars: Armada

I think entitlement is a word that gets thrown around a lot...

I will say that when I bought in the bare minimum for a list at around 250 I felt entitled to two things... support from ffg for local community, and 1-2 years of expansions... and I don't feel like that entitlement is unreasonable... fortunately ffg has come through in spades in both of these and I'm very pleased with the game thus far...

I agree. There's a difference between entitlement and operating in good faith.

I tend to throw around words like "entitlement" when other people throw around words like "deserve" and "owe."

There's a difference between expectation and entitlement. When someone buys a game like Armada, and a similar game exists that gets expansions, I think it is reasonable to expect more expansions.

When someone buys Armada and expects every expansion to be the same time, the same size, no matter what is going on in other parts of the world outside their tiny bubble, and then start loudly proclaiming they are owed things, then that is entitlement and I don't have much patience for it.

And I used to fuel private aircraft for a living, so I have a pretty good idea of what entitlement looks like.

Being a Golem Arcana owner, I can understand why people feel scared that their game might die. If it can be any reassurance, at least Armada doesn't need a freaking app to function.

Anyway!

I view things very positively with Armada. Why? There's a crapton of Star Wars movies coming our way, and it might just attract even more people to the game. That's free marketing right there!

GA probably died because no one knew of it or bought it. I am not so sure that the app did anything significant to the people buying or not buying into it.

I like the idea of games exploring ways to bring different technologies together, I would love to see an Armada App that would track Command Dials, Tokens, Damage and Critical Effects. At least one of my regular opponents would benefit from such a tool as would we who play against him as he often doesn't stack dials, flip commands or deal damage to the right ship.

Any experienced gamer can tell you that as long as you can lay out a mat with miniatures on it and have people come over and ask, "Holy @$^&, whats that?" a game is never dead. Look at battletech, I don't even know who owns it anymore its died so many times. As long as there are loyal players creating a demand for a game it will keep going back into print Having raise a golden goose, I can't see FFG letting Armada get away from them, but I it did there would be plenty of companies waiting to jump in and grab it.

Secondly, the game community has a lot of knowledgeable and skilled people who are already creating alternate ships and cards for them. I'd have to learn patience to paint miniatures again, but go to shapeways and see whats available.

As someone who also plays "obscure" Horse and Musket games from time to time ... y'all truly have no appreciation of "dead" or less than thriving communities.

There's really no better word I think for Armada as anything other than "thriving", as to me it sure seems like it has all the attributes of an exciting game ecosystem to be involved with. Between organized play, new players, new releases showing up every so often, active forums, active online game play through vassal ...

It's good times these days and least from my perspective FFG does a great job of being behind what they have and keeping it fun for all of us.

Is it all perfect? Heck no... but it sure is pretty good.

Anyone still playing SWM? I have a huge collection that never gets used. sure, I can break it out and show it to people, but they cannot go get their own stuff for it anymore, so, yeah, its dead because it is not generating new players. cool game, but I'm going to sell it off because It never gets played anymore.

Why am I only allowed to like this once?

Cause them's the rules!

But I agree, I think this is an important distinction. Is it necessary to get expansions for the health of the game? Yes? Will there ever be enough expansions to sate our lust for plastic spaceships? Probably not. But that doesn't mean we should get everything now. I like a slow, steady, reliable release schedule that stretches far into the future. I think it bodes well for the game and community.

I'm pretty new to the Armada scene and am totally hyped about the Wave 4 announcement. I cleared out the stock at my LGS a couple weeks ago and came in today to get some more. Only the Core Set had been restocked. Asked the owner when the rest of the new stuff was coming in and he said he was taking individual orders instead of replacing stuff that had been sold. Had the feeling that he wasn't sure how long the expansions would be sitting on the shelf. Hopefully after I blow a couple of paychecks on the game it will restore his faith somewhat.

I have to say, I for one never stopped believing in Armada, but that may have more to do with the fact that I played Tau in 40k, and waited something close to 3 years for a new codex. This few months stuff if kids play when looking at that type of timeframe.

Only 3 years for a codex? I play 40K, want to know my army? Sisters of Battle, don't complain to me about waiting for a codex!

In Armada, I was content with wave 3. I could see alot of new options with it, wave 4....mind blown.

Realizing that the models are of the old pewter variety, how much is the buy in to have a decent Sisters of Battle army plus Codex? I love the lore and have been contemplating getting into the game and figure that theme-wise there's no better faction to buy into than everybody's favorite pyro bolter b*BLAM* Using such a vulgar term for the Daughters of the Emperor is Heresy!

You don't want to know the price. I built it over a couple of years, but with the current state of balance (or lack there of) 40K, it's been over a year since I've played a game. FFG has been going a pretty ok job at keeping balance in their games. If only GW had been able to do so...

And there we have the TLDR for pretty much this entire post.

Amen.

I was thinking the other day about how 2 months ago there we droves of people who seemed seriously concerned about the future of Armada. Oh, how a few months change everything!

With wave 3 on the boat, wave 4 in production and Ciena Ree lurking out there somewhere, I have to think there is hardly a person who is on these boards who is worried about the future of Armada.

Now to find some money to buy all this great stuff.

I will ask you a question, young man, and I will speak slowly enough that perhaps you will even comprehend the rhetorical devices that I am using.

What's that? My assistant informs me that when I dictate to her, my words will not appear on these newfangled display devices at the speed at which I am dictating. A bunch of poppycock, if you ask me. Terrible presentation. Good Tom Edison could have done much better than this Al Gore fellow. Well, tell them I said to read slowly, then. Slowly enough that they can understand with their public school educations or whatever it is people have these days. The Queen's English has truly fallen into disrepair.

Where was I? Ah, yes, questions.

Would this fine gaming establishment really release a squadron pack consisting of but a single squadron and a single card?

Would this fine gaming establishment release a wave that consisted of only a single squadron pack?

Ha! I trust even you can follow my meaning on that.

Alllllllllllllllllllrightee then. :D

Back on topic, I think we're in the very early stages of the game. The potential for expansion is tremendous, and Armada is only going to get bigger, more diverse and better.

Can i get a "Praise the EMPEROR?!"

Ha! I trust even you can follow my meaning on that.

First off. . . GREAT NAME!

Secondly, I am suspecting that we will be getting a squadron pack that is 1 of each of w1's squadrons but with 1-2 new aces for each version. This is my theory. I dont thing it will be on its own but it could be.

Can i get a "Praise the EMPEROR?!"
