Xwing and Armada

how many of you play Armada as well? Is it worth getting into????

I have both games and have been playing more X-wing of late as there are more local players for it. Could you define "worth getting into" for you?

They have a few things in common. Star Wars universe obviously. The models are nice and the game is good. The games however are VERY different and scratch very different itches.

I prefer Armada but I also prefer games I get to play so I've been getting a bit more pushed towards X-wing.

The big difference I think comes down to in Armada where you shoot and then move. There is also no pilot skill factor so the order of ships doing things and what they'll do can alter from turn to turn. This boils down to needing much more of a plan AND much more fluidity. For some of your ships you're making choices on the first turn that will not be shown to be correct or incorrect till turn three. So the pressure comes on you to make sure you're in position for that earlier decision to be correct.

You can "wing it" much more in X-wing.

I'm sure if you book around the Armada forum there are several topics on this but I'm happy to answer questions.

Im onterested in the whole planning ahead thing. Like with xwing, its a matter of getting your fleet into that perfect position. And yes...its the love for Star Wars too!!

I've been dreaming about changing the X-Wing maneuvering system into something resembling the Armada style.

Well yes you want to get into perfect position the trouble is you have to get in perfect position for your shot next turn. This gets complicated by the fact that you don't know which ship your opponent will move first next turn and by which ship you may be forced to activate first next turn in order to move it away from a crippling shot. This is the fluid part.

This is further complicated by your command dials. Bigger ships have more dials. An ISD has three. So on the first turn you pick the commands you'll reveal on turn 1, turn 2, and turn 3. Your command dials are how you adjust speed and gain maneuverability. They allow you to order your squadrons of fighters increasing their effectiveness and options. They allow you to modify your dice when shooting or repair your ship. This is the having a plan part.

Your squadrons need to be in range of the ship that has the command. They have to be in range of a target. These things will ideally coincide. You don't want to turn over a repair command when you desperately need to change speed and so on.

I've been dreaming about changing the X-Wing maneuvering system into something resembling the Armada style.

Couldn't you just play Armada? I'm curious what you think is to be gained by having small ships move like big ships.

Hah, no, Armada is the single FFG Star Wars boardgame I haven't touched. My wallet thanks me.

I think it would make stuff more maneuverable, more cinematic.

I'm all for more cinematic (although lately that seems to mean take all the color out of it and bounce the camera around constantly) but it is clear that you've never touched Armada. The two systems of maneuver are designed around the differences between moving two enormously different masses about. Neither game would be well served in my opinion by being pushed closer to the other with regards to how the ships move.

Armada is amazing. Has a low playerbase right now but hopefully that will pick up soon.

I play both. I've got a regional in 2 weeks for x-ring so that's all I'm playing right now. Buy my mind is all over armada. It's a new game for me and it's definitely...something different.

I bought two Armada Core Sets, one each expansion plus a bunch of fighter blisters. I knew that it was more to display the ships in the shelves than to play. It is even worse.

Gamers simply not play Armada in my area. Total failure. My wargamer friends say that Armada is significantly more complex that X wing, but not "big" enought to be included in the wargames list. Too much upgrade card combos dependent, the interaction between squadrons is quite basic, and not popular. In my opinion the ship to ship.combat mechanic is very good, maneuver OK, and squadron vs squadron simply aceptable.

No LGS plays about Armada, and sells are ultra low. Perhaps the Basic Set is not the best idea, two small Rebel ships and a out of date slow warhorse. The worst Basic Set. Rebel Assault basic set gives you many.hours of diversion for 100 euros Armada gives you...a introduction to a Basic Set.

I want to play Armada...but my players think.that a 200-300 pts x wing play is better. And I must agree.
