Palp Mini Swarm

By Dereksson, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been wondering why the Palp Mini Swarm isn't a thing.

(At least I've not seen any mention in the forums)

What I mean is something like this...

Omicron Group Pilot (29)
(Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Emperor Palpatine (8))

Black Squadron Pilot (15) x 3
(TIE Fighter (14), Crack Shot (1))

“Wampa” (14)

Academy Pilot (12)

I don't get to play as much as I'd like so I've not had a chance to try it out.

Has anyone else tried this?

Does it work? (I'm guessing it doesn't)

Any thoughts on this anyone?

Thanks

Off the top of my head, there are a couple things that Aces do better. First, more ships means more rolls means Palpatine's single die change has less of an impact overall; damage is just as likely to get through or not on a different roll. Second, or to put it another way, Aces tend to have such good efficiency, arc-dodging, and other abilities, that they really only need that one die changed per round to make all the difference between getting hit (or pushing damage through) and not.

That's not to say the idea is completely without merit, though. Try it out; I've been curious myself!

Thanks Obi, I see what you mean about the impact of Palpatine's die change.

I may still end up trying this out next week in a regional.

(Unless I go with Dengar and Bossk)

What saves you is the Palp-Wampa combo. Maybe see if you can do something like this:

Omicron Group Pilot — Lambda-Class Shuttle 21

Emperor Palpatine 8

Ship Total: 29

"Wampa" — TIE Fighter 14

Ship Total: 14

Lieutenant Colzet — TIE Advanced 23

Advanced Targeting Computer 1

TIE/x1 0

Ship Total: 24

Black Squadron Pilot — TIE Fighter 14

Crack Shot 1

Ship Total: 15

Black Squadron Pilot — TIE Fighter 14

Crack Shot 1

Ship Total: 15

Gives 3 points to work with. Palp+Wampa+Colzet means you can push 1 crit through shields while all pieces live. You could add Prockets or Advanced Homing Missiles (I prefer Homing with this lineup) to Colzet, or Baffle to the shuttle, or a few other things as well. Those 3 points have a lot of utility on this list. I've been really interested in the Palp+Wampa+Colzet combo lately, and I'd love to see it used competitively.

Having a Cheap ace can allow you to still have a "Mini-Swarm" of some academy TIEs

Omicron Group Pilot(21)

-Palp(8)

The Inquisitor(25)

-TIE v/1(1)

-Autothrusters(2)

-PtL(3)

2 Academy TIEs(24)

Wampa(18)

Total 98/100

Did you mean Howlrunner for 18? Wampa is 14 points.

Gives 3 points to work with.

Could throw Reinforced Deflectors on the Shuttle for potential survivability.

Thanks Raven, I like this idea.

I think I'd spend the 3 points on xx-23 S-Thread tracers on Colzet and Tractor Beam with Tactical Jammer on the Shuttle.

Thanks Ska I like the Inquisitor so this appeals to me.

The downside, for me, would be that there may too much variation in pilot skills.

I know I'd lose the ace (and therefore the advantage of using Palpatine with an ace) but thought this was an OK alternative (with all the small ships at Pilot Skill 4)...

Omicron Group Pilot (30)

(Lambda-Class Shuttle (21), Emperor Palpatine (8), Tractor Beam(1))

Baron of the Empire (26)

(TIE Adv. Prototype (19), TIE/V1 (1), Push The Limit (3), Autothrusters (2), XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1))

Black Squadron Pilot (15) x 2

(TIE Fighter (14), Crack Shot (1))

“Wampa” (14)

I'm playing around with this as an idea:

- Carnor Jax: PTL; RGT; AT; SD

- Lamda Omi: Palp

- Wampa: SD

- Scrouge: Crack shot.

Carnor's a flanker then get's in while Wampa works with the Emperor. Scourge is there to start laying in more hits once they take some damage.

Other variation is:

- Soontir: PTL; RGT; AT; SD

- Lamda Omi: Palp

- Wampa: SD

- Scrouge: Crack shot.

Some thing. Essentially you've got the Soontir threatening the flanks, while the Emp backs up Wampa and Scourge. Each one is a threat, so makes prioritization a challenge for the enemy.

I've been really interested in the Palp+Wampa+Colzet combo lately, and I'd love to see it used competitively.

I've played 30 games with Palpshuttle, Wampa, Colzet (AC) and Inquisitor. Maybe it's not as competitive as the OL build (instead of Colzet), but I had a pretty good run with it. So far I'm 21-9.

Gives 3 points to work with.
