Drasnighta's Wet Work

By Drasnighta, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

No worries.

TH eonly Caveat I add is, I use mostly Citadel because... Well, I used to work for games workshop, and I bought a bunch of them at 50% Discount before I left... They are not the Best Brushes out there (they're hardly the worst, either)... Like most half-decent brushes, they'll last if you love them... That is the number one success for a painter - being able to maintain those tools...

Which is why I'm starting to run out now. You can look after your brushes all you want, but in the middle of the night, your Toddler takes them and dumps them all in an empty water pot so the bristles are bent for hours before you find them... There's not much you can do. You can fix them, but it still takes a toll on them :D

Fell asleep one time waiting for my MC80 to dry and woke up to a group of bent brushes never again will I let that happen it is the worst. Now i have some reaper painting brushes which get the job done, but my #1 seems to have got hair very quickly.

8 Troopers at the back mostly Done...

Leaves me 22 to go...

A Moment's Silence for the 2 Very Brave, Very Valiant Detail Brushes who gave their lives to see this through to completion:

... and yes, that's one of the better ones. AFTER the Mold lines have been cleared (they're actually indented into it now, so a Scrape won't do).

And the Varnish will take a lot of that texture off once its on there... They are going Gloss after all.

And I'm done with this.

It was, an experience . One that I will no doubt have to repeat at some stage... But Certainly not for what this client paid for it...

This also finally made its way to me.

Technically, I can claim to be an Award-Winning painter now.

Congrats on the finish (150 pieces?) and the award. Show us the piece that won it please.

I can't, actually. I do not have pictures.

And even then...

It was:

Generic TIE Bombers, lead by a White-Striped Gamma-Veteran Major Rhymer...

Two Squads of Generic Interceptors.

And a Darth Vader, in a Blue-Grey Advanced, flanked by two Generic TIE Fighters.......

... It was a Local Commission I'd fulfilled specifically for the Attack-X Tournament.

... I stress "Generic", because that means I only charged $5 to paint 'em.

Paint them again and show us!

Send me some unpainted ones, and for the low, low fees I advertise on my Facebook Page (but not here, because utilising the Forums to sell is against the usage policy, although it looks like I'm one of the few who still adheres to that....) ... I Will!

Final X-Wing Cockpit Work happening now.

... Quick one here... About 4 hours of Brushwork... I got them last week, but my last brush had been destroyed... Toddler grabbed two brushes, one of which was brand-new with the plastic tube protecting it, and mashed the other brush into the end at the same time ... And then hiding it in the Kitchen Utensils Drawer, where it stayed for a day or so before it was discovered...

So, was a few days before I could get a replacement... But I got the work done!

... So, y'know.... Send the Photos on...

Arrange Pickup for 11:15.

9:50 rolls around.

"So, really liking Dutch... Have a Dutch there?"

...

So, 3 Cups of Coffee and 25 minutes later....

So, this is probably a bit of a nothing to most people here, but its Kind of a Big Deal for me...

...

You see, the last time I picked up an Airbrush, and actually painted with it, was close to 15 years ago.

I was a teenager, and living in the wonderfully temperate and semi-humid climate of Gippsland... And I was "okay"... About as good as you'd expect a young person to be while being completely self-taught.

...

Flash forward to now.

I hadn't been able to afford an Airbrush since, and recently got a Donation of an Iwata Neo and Compressor.

Unfortunately, the donor had handed the airbrush around to 'friends' before donating to me, and they'd basically stripped it of parts, without his knowledge... So a Needle, a Tip, and a Chucking Nut later, I put it all back together...

And now, I'm living in Calgary - where its Cold and Dry. Always Dry. its raining right now, and it still barely registers 2% humidity inside, because that's the way houses are built here - Dry.

But.

I Airbrushed.

For the first time in 15 years.

The mix was perhaps a little thin, looking back - considered overcompensation from the way I used to do it... But still.

I Airbrushed.

...

This is a big F**king deal for me. :D

Nice!

Welcome back to the airbrush club. What're your plans for your rebels, as far as paint schemes go?

Cudos on acquiring an air brush, it must feel awesome.

Oh yeah! Airbrush Time!

Looking forward to seeing the finish product.

I like deep contrasts, and Purple is generally a favoured colour - but I might be looking at some more Crimson or Burgundy this time, as an accent...

I have a new "Admiral" to base the Fleet around, and she is a recurrent RP character recently Shoehorned into the Star Wars background with assistance from Vykes.... And she'll probably pretend to be Sato when he releases, because I've been Hyper-excited for a Squadron-Involving Admiral since day one...

I found what *I believe* to be some Vallejo Game Colour Armour Wash... I say believe, because the Label has Faded to Unreadability, and I vaguely recall buying it about 5 or 6 years ago.....

Its very powdery, coming out of the bottle - so with a 80 (40/40 water/medium) / 20 mix of the wash... I apply it...

And now I have a beautifully organically bronze patina on it...

Not the colour I was after... but beautiful nonethless :D

Purple is the best colour Dras, hence me sneaking a 'purple-grey' onto my Sds. The interdictor though, that thing is going to go full purple glow I think.

The theme to my award winning Undead Vampire Counts army was Royal Purple and Bright Pink.... It offset wonderfully with the bright Ethereal Green of the Spiritwork and the Sombre Bone and Blue of the Skeletons
