In X-wing, anything can happen.
Anything.
Let me rephrase that: anything WILL happen. ;-)

The laws of good storytelling, in conjunction with the dice gods, have ensured that, on more occasions than seems fair, my Academy pilots have rolled 2 natural crits against enemies who blank their dice and have already spent their tokens.
Of course those same Gods have seen me roll 6 blanks against one crit... with 2 hull left... we can all guess which crit got drawn.
Major explosion>Major Explosion>Direct Hit because we well know how this game loves to play hob with probability.
I once got one-shotted with my full health, cloaked, focused Phantom through an asteroid by a friggin' stressed X-Wing Rookie Pilot!
Now you're gonna say: "Well, that's not so bad, it happens."
To that I'll answer: The guy had but one hull left! I had shot at him first - 5 dice, three hits. Now guess how many evades the s.o.b. rolled...
Chance is a fickle and cruel mistress.
I almost did the same once. Game was down to a single Bandit versus a shieldless Vader, I nearly called it quits and conceeded to my opponent but a friend watching told me not to and to roll the dice. It was a range three shot on Vader but I rolled the dice and landed two crits, I watched as my oppoenent rolled two blanks and two focuses, he had no focus token to use having spent it to attack my Bandit. First crit card was a direct hit followed by minor explosion, my opponent then rolls the final hit and Vader is gone.
I've learnet to always take the shot, always roll the dice no matter how pointless or hopeless it seems. Never understimate the power of RNG.
I once had a raw dice lambda shoot my fat han (who had already threepio-ed) at range 1 with 1 shield and 8 hull... 1 hit and three crits:
so... hit takes the shield, direct hit, direct hit, major explosion (hit), major explosion (hit), direct hit.
So yeah... dead 9 health falcon from a lambda with no dice mods. (The next turn the stupid doom cow popped my 1 shield 1 hull Poe with a hit and a vader...)
Anything can happen in this game.
or you know a ghost shoots at one health blocked carnor with a target lock with auto blaster in arc and Carnor lives, THEN for ***** and giggles we do my primary 5 dice attack... still lives. Those dice are now in the trash.

CARNOR LIVES
AT my last Regional Carnor survived I think 3 turns of range 1 fire from a Scout on 1HP with structural damage. Thank the Emperor for autothrusters.

you allowed green dice to play a part
you knew what was coming

Listen to fickle, only use Autoblasters with AC, bombs, Advanced Homing Missiles, APL, Feedback array, Vader, ect.
Used the Autoblaster first... with target lock. But just to prove a point my opponent and I rolled the regular primary just to see...
Also, forgot to mention that Palp was also dead.
I'm not salty or anything though....

no kidding, it's all I play anymore
except AHM, APL, proxy/cluster mines; because they still use dice
. Well, so do ABTs but those at least are modifiable and spit on your opponent's green dice
there's nothing more frustrating than outflying your opponent and having the dice not only save him, but turn your advantage into a disadvantage through sheer rng f***ery
in contrast, there's nothing more satisfying than a situation in which the dice have no say in the outcome
First tournament, my B-Wing one-shotted (pre-autothrusters) Soontir with Stealth Device at R3 through a rock. And by at R3, I mean at 3.999999. It looked so obviously out of range that I wasn't even going to measure but figured what the heck, and the end of the range ruler ever so slightly clipped the base. 3 hits, all blanks. Boom.
Last year I took some time to teach a friend how to play - it was getting to the point where he was competent enough to beat me fair and square without me feeling like I needed to coach him or go easy on him.
He put together a neat Whisper list and gave me a really good battering with it, I managed to nick a shield off her early on and take down her escorts - but in the late-game I couldn't lay a glove on her and she was picking me off at will.
The game ended with a focused cloaked whisper behind a rock facing Dutch on 1 hull with crits that prevented him using his turret or performing any actions
I rolled 2 natural crits - Whisper rolled all blanks - first crit took a shield - face up card was a direct hit.
I bought the beers that evening
Turretless HWK. Range 3 shot on a 1-hull Firespray. Boom! I only regret that there were no witnesses but my kitchen table and a cat.
At one of our tournaments we had a turretlwss hwk with a 0 dice primary kill a fat han at the final table.
