You Never Know; or, When In Doubt, Roll

By DailyRich, in X-Wing

I was playing a game on Sunday and the only shot my wimpy little Z-95 had was a Range 3 shot through an obstacle at a cloaked Echo. Two red dice against six greens. It seemed pointless, and I almost decided not to bother, but I figured I didn't have anything to lose.

I rolled two hits. Echo rolled a combination of blanks and eyeballs. And had no focus token.

Both shields gone thanks to an attack I wasn't even going to roll in the first place.

Just goes to show you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

The inverse is also true. Given the choice between getting out of arc/range entirely, or staying in arc/range and toeknning up, always choose the former. They can't hit you with shots they don't take.

Similarly, if you're not sure you're out of arc/range and don't have a way to MAKE sure, always assume you can be shot at and token up as best you can, even if it limits your movement options next turn, because you might regret not doing it.

A blankout on six dice is unlikely but by no means impossible, especially if you don't have any defensive tokens.

on the flip side, you also miss a lot of the shots you should have landed

just yesterday had to deal with a bossk rolling 5 naked evades in a row while flying k-wings that, for whatever reason, were not similarly charmed

I had to seismic charge bossk to death; just imagine how depressing that is.

never risk dice

Having had Turr Phennir one-shot with Stealth at range 3 behind a rock with no tokens in one game during my first ever tournament (may have even been by 2 dice with a Direct Hit), I've learned my lesson. (Also, I still managed to win that game with Kath & two Academies.)

Turretless HWK. Range 3 shot on a 1-hull Firespray. Boom! I only regret that there were no witnesses but my kitchen table and a cat.

First local tourny i went to (we have one about every month it seems, since theres about 24 of us playing now lol) i took Vessery, Punisher, and shmuk TIEFighter. Vessery twice in my 3 games got shot at with Range3, Stealth Device, and through a rock and still took heavy damage. I dont mean i took enough to take out stealth, i mean i lost my shields or worse.

That sorta crap happens all the time. Both ways in fact. Ran the FatHan build against Soontir/Boba and fired at Soontir with FatHan like 6 rounds, no damage. Biggs fired once through a rock range2...did 2 damage lol. Next round, Han still missed, Biggs finished him off lol.

Don't worry, the cat will remember. Cats always remember .

So what's the name of the patron saint of the Z-95? Cause they definitely have one watching over them. Some games they are just so #blessed

It has been my experience that z95s (the unnamed ones) have the very best rolls in the entire game. Ask paul heaver. He will agree

their patron saint is RNGesus

Is your cat a good X-Wing player cause that'd be awesome.

I thought this thread was going to be about barrel rolling tactics.

Oh, that same game I had a cloaked Mist Hunter roll blanks on two successive defense rolls. That was fun.

My record is 7 blank rolls straight: 3 green, 2 red (plus x2 target lock re-roll blanks), 3 red, 3 green, 2 green, 3 red, 2 red (plus x2 target lock re-roll)......I even laughed, through my tears....

had a tournament defining game wherein the dice were so bull the opposed Ghost rolled more natural evades than all 3 Ks combined

there's only so much even bombs can do when the odds are made up and your plays don't matter :(

It's like I told a friend of mine once when we first started playing... It's not like you'll run out of ammo.

Rudor says hi.

Pot shot fever. doo doo doo. Pot shot fever. Doo doo doo doo

In X-wing, anything can happen.

Anything.

Stupity compounded with bad greens is the perfect recipe for disaster. Vader one-shotted at R3 through a rock BECAUSE I K turned him onto an asteroid, took damage then proceeded to roll 2 focus and 3 blanks.

I hate this game! (sometimes)

Ask Paul Heaver during Worlds Final

This comes up every time we talk about dice probability in the local group.

From a Wave 2 Tournament.

"My Wedge is at at Range 1 of your Rookie Pilot, with a TL and a Focus"

*rolls all blanks*

"No worries, I'll spend the TL"

*rolls blanks again*

"..."

Them dice.

The laws of good storytelling, in conjunction with the dice gods, have ensured that, on more occasions than seems fair, my Academy pilots have rolled 2 natural crits against enemies who blank their dice and have already spent their tokens.

Of course those same Gods have seen me roll 6 blanks against one crit... with 2 hull left... we can all guess which crit got drawn.

Palob range 3 lands a hit on dash. Guri misses at range 2

Maranda 1 shots Vader range 3 with a Homing Missile but cant hit a Tie fighter range 1 rolling 4 dice then dies from return fire

5 attack dice roll 1 hit spend target lock roll 4 blanks then Blaster Turret from HWK rolls hit crit crit

Dice just laugh at you some times
