[LIST] Anyone with experience running RAC + Whisper?

By Tlfj200, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been running RAC + Whisper for nearly 4 weeks now, and love it. I even ALMOST made the cut at a regional (I've never even scraped a cut before), and really enjoy this list, and plan to play it in the rest of regionals season, if not longer.

That said, almost no one plays this list in my area, and very few similar lists have been on streams lately, so I get very little feedback on other peoples' strategies with the list. Just wondering if anyone else flies this, and would share any feedback/experience they've had - setups, matchups (like uboats), etc.

List [100]:
RAC - Veteran Instincts, Gunner, Darth Vader, Engine Upgrade
Whisper - Veteran Instincts, Fire-Control System, Agent Kallus, Advanced Cloaking System

Also, I've been considering switching Veteran Instincts on RAC to Adaptability to allow me to move/shoot in any order (primarily to allow whisper to shoot FIRST, potentially dropping shields on a target for RAC's crit ability + Vader crits, while also ensuring I don't destroy a target whisper needs to shoot to cloak.

It would also give the list a 1-point bid, which would not be a big deal in MOST matchups, but still, could help ensure whisper gets initiative (to shoot first)

However, I see the following downsides:

  1. Dropping to PS 9 (and trying to get initiative for whisper) means dampering RAC's ability to arc-dodge PS-9s. BUT, there are fewer PS 9's, and soontir isn't the concern. The remaining aces at PS 9 (in my area) are typically: Jake, Whisper, Zuckuss, and Darth Vader.
  2. It would allow for return fire on PS 9's, hurting those matchups (RAC potentially takes more damage, limiting Vader; see aces above).
  3. You have to place RAC at PS 8, and you usually want initiative, so you'd place before their PS 8's (which are most Aces now). I don't think this matters as much, as I've found that most of the time I want to start in the opposite corner as my opponent, and most aces will not necessarily want to joust Gunner/Vader RAC. BUT, maybe it's an issue on some marginal lists, as RAC typically doesn't really want to joust?

I think the ability to shoot with whisper first helps the u-boats matchup, which is always nice to help that matchup (and a few others - it's generally nice to shoot with whisper first), but sacrifices against some strength against [some] ace lists. The problem is I don't know how much it will matter. Anyone have any experience with that version, or thoughts?

I played this list on our regionals, I came out 11/23 so I'm quite happy, since I haven't played this game for so long :) I do love both Decimator and the Phantom

What do you do/how do you set up against triple b-boats (and/or 2-uboats + zuckuss)?

Since you have higher PS than your opponent, set up in the other corner of the map and race across it as fast as possibile. 4 forward with a boost and 4 forward, cloak, decloak with a boost and race on. Just to try to get behind your opponent or in range 1 so they can't fire their torpedos. The decimator with Engine Upgrade is really agile so staying out of their fireing arc shouldn't be that much of a problem.

I won against a double u boat with 2 Z-95 in our regionals (that list eventually won the regional).
