RTL - Engage with Large base monsters

By AARONZEA, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello!

Regarding Large base monsters and Engage action.

Asking because it is important when using Affliction from the Hexer deck.

So how do you guys go by it?

Do you move until the space you move is adjacent to the hero?

Or do you move until the space where you can expand allows the monster to be adjacent to the hero?

For reference: from rule book: "ENGAGE When engaging, a figure is trying to get adjacent to a target. It performs a move action and moves toward the target (see “Toward” on page 9), stopping when it is adjacent or when it runs out of movement points."

Thank you in advance.

The large monster can get adjacent to the hero with a fewer number of movement points by stopping and expanding. It is in the RtL rules that when the heroes have a choice about how a monster behaves (unlike the coop) they are directed to choose the option that is worst for the heroes. If this means avoiding the extra damage from Affliction, then it would do that.

Honestly, it's a way you can personally tune the difficulty of the app. While the above rule is there, the heroes are the only ones playing the game. There is no OL to get upset if you bend the rules. If you're having a tough time, maybe the monsters are behaving a little dumber and keep walking even though they're hurting. If you're squashing them, maybe they get a little more intelligent with their movement. RtL is all about hero enjoyment- so play however you want.

Edit. Go for what Zaltyre say.

Thank you both.

DECISION-MAKING

When resolving app instructions, players frequently have multiple options. When this happens, it is up to the players to decide how to resolve it within the confines of the provided instructions. How the decision-making is approached is largely up to the play group. New players or players looking for a easier experience are free to steer the monsters toward choices that favor the heroes. Players looking for a true test of skill should steer the monsters toward the tactical maneuvers that a skilled overlord would employ. Regardless of how players approach them, these decisions need to be made as quickly as possible without excess deliberation.

This probably my favorite addition to the co-op rules!
