Team Tournament?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

Has anyone ever done a team style tournament?

Not like team epic, where it's 2v2 at the same table, but essentially a regular tournament, but players are on teams with other players, all running their own independent lists.

It would run like a normal tournament, the only new rules would be that players who are on a team cannot be matched against each other, and at the end of the night teams' total scores are added together. So you win as a team.

Thoughts on this?

We had brainstormed this as a way to ease new players into competetive X-wing; pairing new players with experienced ones in teams of 2.

Closest I've come is my FLGS does a 'Topgun Tournament' where you and a partner each make a 60 pt list, limited to no more than 2 ships and play together against other teams.

Only change was double the prizes and 10 extra min. Per round.

Yes they have been done a couple times. Store Wars in Colorado for one and then the outryder cup on the east coast.

I believe that each players win points get added together and then the team with the most wins the whole shebang. Also, you have to do pairings so that team members do not play each other. Don't quote me though as I haven't made it to either event.

We do the OutRyder Cup locally in our area. It's designed for teams of 6 though.

This would be really fun for a league. Possibly a tournament too, but you don't get to do all the trash talk that's really needed for something like this. League is where it's at! Weekly postings and easier to build the bracket. Lots of trash talk. Even more fun if you all have callsigns.

I've seen some of these in other games.

One I think would work that would be cool is stuff like:

3 people team.

Use overall team lists points added to determine what team has initiative

Team without initiative puts up 2 players. Team with Initiative choses 1 of their guys to play that person.

Team with initiative puts up last 2 players, Team without initiative chooses what guy will face who.

After games, Team with most wins, wins of course, but MOV is used to determine other places, (2 nd , 3 rd )

I’d like to try these.

And how is this going to work so that it doesn't turn into 2 players using the same squadron divided into two sections?

If you are really going to be looking at throwing two people and having them work together then I believe you need to shake up pairing each round. If there were only 4 people involved that is still three completely different games as you change the pairings between those 4 people. Maybe this is about 2x2 formats and you are thinking of something completely different.

Now if your thought is that your team is simply Player 1 and Player 2 yet each performs as individuals against other individuals and you only combine their net scores then maybe you have a team format although it really doesn't seem like teams to me. If you're trying to pair a strong and weak player together then maybe the combined score would be something toward the middle but how is the strong player actually helping the weak player actually improve his/her game? If 4-0 is paired with 0-4 does this mean the team has a 4-4 record for the tournament? How much good that does may be questionable although not having to play your "team mate" could be nice to some although that is when you should theoretically be able to ID and not alter things one bit.

Guardians of Tyr did a 3player team event last year and are doing it again. 1 list from each faction must be used (Stopped PalpAces x3 last) But this is in the UK so probably uninteresting.
