3rd Faction?

By LordTesla, in Star Wars: Armada

Do you guys think there is ever going to be a 3rd faction? If so who could it be? I didn't think the Black Sun Corp. really had any capital ships, (if they did then why did then have to be in the smuggling business at all anyway?).

What about the Yuuzhan Vong? I know they are technically not canon anymore (darn you Mickey Mouse!) and their upgrades would all have to be faction specific if you want to keep it thematic because they grew their ships instead of building them. However you could still include regular upgrade cards in Vong ship expansions and vice versa.

What do you guys think?

I really see no need for it but it could be (dont expect it soon). Perhaps they plan to release them like I whislisted?

Not any time soon.

We're still building towards the "Complete Experience" between both sides we already have.

Highly unlikely. No other group really had large capital ships.

And Vong not a chance.

I am betting that we wont see factions anytime in the next 3 years because they would probably want to draw from the First Order and the Resistance and they will need to have the latest movies to expose new ships and squadrons from there. Other than that the next logical choice would be the Clone Wars factions.

The closest we could get would be mercenary type ships that could be used by both factions

I doubt any 3rd faction for the next few years. Instead, we'll probably get the sub-factions that are in X-Wing.

What do you guys think?

Losing the Vonf was one of the best things Disney had ever done...

You guys don't think they could utilize the mandalorian cruisers for a third faction? I heard a rumor that we will see mandalorian ships in the upcoming movies, you don't think they would make a great third faction?

Ya I wouldn't be surprised if the first ships from a new faction are the FO or the Resistance. I would really like to see stuff from Rouge One before any of the other movies though.

Mandalorian Wars here I come!

FFG could do SCUM... but this game is prolly going to stay as is. If they do add anything it will be TFA and other film or REBELS ships.

Scum would be good with flotillas, small ships and fighters. I think the creation of flotillas makes sum far more likely to happen, and this would be the faction that would get all the random crap from the EU that all the fanboys know and love.

It would be good to have a flotilla pack that comes with 3 different ship models, and you can have ship A and B type for an offensive flotilla, and ship B and C type for a more defensive orientated one.

Maybe you could add one of the squadrons from the Rouges and Villains expansion to the flotilla (on an empty third peg) to give that flotilla the special ability of the R+V character?

That kind of customisation and uniqueness could really add flavour to a scum faction for armada, as it would need to be able to be playable and interesting without resorting to large (or even medium) based ships

Any 3rd/4th faction is not going to happen until the new canon is more fleshed out, at most.

The Hutts, Black Sun, etc simply don't have any good reason to have large ships. None. Zero. Nada. They make perfect sense for X-wing where smaller ships can run through blockades and sneak past patrols. But Armada is large warships, and there is absolutely zero reason for a black market organization to spend that much money and manpower to protect their operations when the better option economically and militarily is simply dropping things where they are and running to freedom, then quickly rebuilding in safety.

Shadows of the Empire: "If crime didn't pay, there would be very few criminals."

Please no EU gunk. Just...... no.

That would make for interesting add-on objectives, though now, wouldn't it? That could be an intentional play style for the third faction: focus on winning the objective. I view the rebels as more of a maneuvering faction, and the empire as a crosshairs faction.

Well, we already have it.

So its just not "more", right?

I mean. I like Garm. Garm was a Good, and Interesting choice.

A possible 3rd faction would be Matthew McConaughey from "Interstellar" inside the Endurance with the 2 rangers as a single stick squadron.

Well stated, yeah this game is gonna be IMP Vs REB prolly always.

;)

I would agree with the general consensus here. A third party faction makes a lot of sense in X-Wing, but in the current cannon and even the old EU, there's not much that would work.

Which is kind of surprising. You'd think a galaxy would have large mercenary groups, and said groups would need military fleets to move from system to system.

I don't think the new movies will bring about new factions. I think the Resistance and the First Order will roll right into Rebels/Imperials, like in X-Wing.

I think the issue is scale.

Sure, mercenary groups and all would have fleets to move from system to system....

... but small, and more importantly, very important.

They're likely to have only one or two.

I mean, you're basically playing off the death of a group when you ahve a bad day... Its not very thematic... :D

At least the alliance (relatively) and the Empire (definitely) can absorb losses....

... of course, its all moot, since we've had HOW MANY Demolishers die recently? :D

There are a some 3rd parties that could have capital scale ships. If you watched the Clone Wars animated series, you know that the Jedi asked the Hutts if the republic could move ships through their territory. They were also afraid to anger Jaba, because they couldn't fight the Hutts and the Separatist at the same time. This would lead to the conclusion that the Hutts did have capital scale ships as well. I haven't seen anything that would say what happened to the Hutts during the Empires time, but since the Hutts consider themselves business men, they may work with the imperials to some extent. We see that Jaba is alive and well during this time... until his unfortunate demise by a certain princess.

There is also the Hapan cluster as well as the occasional pirate that had a capital ship or two or a small fleet.

I wouldn't count a third faction out completely. It is possible to mine the EU for anything at this point. We may not need a third group, but it's always nice to see different things, and if you don't like the EU or a third faction, you don't have to buy it. Just says'

Mandalorians.

Maybe the Atha'an Miere, they could put a sizeable fleet on the table. And they'd Rake everyone. Heh.

There were many third party groups that could have capital ships the problem is many don't have numbers

The nice thing about Armada is that it doesn't need to adhere to canon.

They can effectively create a small multi system faction just capable of fielding a competent fleet.
