Anyone out there playing Battlefront?

By The Grand Falloon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Just hit up the sale where they had it for $25. At that price it ain't bad. I reckon it would be more fun to actually be able to team up and slaughter some rebel scum.

A friend bought it for me for Christmas. I've played it three or four times since then, but it just wasn't the same as previous installments in the game line. The lack of a campaign mode really does it in for me, to be honest. And the fact that it had a fraction of the maps Battlefront II had when released - and that all maps are paid DLC - isn't encouraging.

I play it on the Xbone - got it when it first came out, played it for a couple of months, left it alone for a while and recently got back into it. A few things to consider that might swing your opinion either way:

  • There is no online chat functionality. So it's a team/objective-based game where you can't communicate with your team (unless they're your friends and you're on party chat). I get the impression that this is to prevent young players from hearing "comm-chatter" that their parents wouldn't approve of. But it makes coordination nigh-impossible.
  • There is a really cool Fighter Squadron mode, but it's completely skewed in the rebels' favour (because the A-Wing is fantastic and the TIEs are made out of confetti) - you will rarely see the Imperial team win (true to the source material, I guess, but not ideal from a gameplay perspective).
  • Now that people know what they're doing, the game has that Call of Duty twitchy-trigger gameplay vibe - if they see you first, you're probably dead.
  • The leveling system is almost redundant after a certain point - you get very little for making it all the way to level 50/60. Most of the decent unlocks happen much sooner.
  • For me, playing as a rebel soldier or stormtrooper every single time gets a little stale. There are no classes and quite limited customisation. I'd have preferred a Titanfall-esque setup where the cannon fodder is driven by the AI, and the humans take on the spec ops-style roles.
  • As Simon says, there's no campaign (it was recently disclosed that this feature was cut so that the game could be released to coincide with The Force Awakens).

That said, there's stuff going for it too:

  • Excellent visuals and sound.
  • Really authentic Star Wars vibe.
  • Easily accessible in terms of controls and how to play.
  • Walker Assault mode is an absolute blast!
  • As above for the Fighter Squadron mode.

My advice would be to rent it if possible, and if you decide to go for it and you're an Xbone player, I'll be your wing-man.

Best wishes

Played it for a week out of nostalgia and my buddy begging me to get it. Huge regret.

Hate multiplayer games.

I played my brother's copy on PS4 a little. It gets stale really fast, which is saying something, because my brother would visit for maybe an afternoon. A handful of fun game modes, play them each once and you're done. One or two bot modes that have the essence of the originals, but quickly lose it because there is no variety.

It's a pretty game with good visuals and fairly decent controls, but it's pretty hollow.

I also have it for the 'Bone, grabbed it a couple weeks ago when it was on sale. It's fun, especially Fighter Squadron which is my favorite hands-down. (And, strangely, the most likely for me to find a game.) There's not much to it, but I kind of like that -- what you see is what you get.

Being a Battlefield and Star Wars fan I had hoped to love it. It was my favorite console game plus Star Wars. I even upgraded from the 360 to the One in anticipation. It looks great, but it gets boring quick.

They should have stayed with the Battlefield mechanics. In fact a Star Wars "mod" for Battlefield 4 I think would have been much more successful. All of the fiddly things that kept Battlefield owners playing were tossed in favor of a new card system. I wanted to be able to obtain a basic E11 then later unlock the right to tweek it just how I want with a collapsible stock, special scope, etc. I wanted to be able to ride shotgun in a snowspeeder. I wanted to be able to call in orbital fire if I chose the appropriate kit. I wanted to be able to choose various kits such as sniper, heavy gunner, etc, all the while using Star Wars weapons I know. I wanted to be able to earn the right to upgrade my Y-wing with a new jammer or an improved astromech while applying that new paint scheme I just unlocked. All of those things were capable with the old Battlefield system. Instead we got great graphics and a boring new system incapable of any of these things.

@sturn - yeah, it lacks the urgency of some of the other Battlefield titles. I remember playing Bad Company 2, being holed up in an attic while the foundations shook from tank fire and great big chunks of roof were falling off around us. Battlefront needs some of that. Plus, class abilities that lead to meaningful teamwork - I miss being the medic and bringing people back from the brink, or the engineer who could fix vehicles. In some ways, the clone wars would have been a better setting because of the sheer range of land and air vehicles available.

I got and enjoyed it. Definitely not an in-depth game, but I enjoy the Fighter Squadron stuff (though as said heavily skewed towards Rebels - pilots of equal skill will always fall in the Rebels favor). The new Bounty Challenges are interesting.

I can wait for the Death Star expansion coming up - the Trench Run is going to be awesome!

Oh, play on the PS4 btw - ooRisingAngeloo is my nick.

In response to the OP:(Just a bit of info, but I am extremely paranoid) No, for all I know you could be a serial killer or you could be trying to get private information.

Kyla: Why? Why did you have to kill me. Also, revenge is mine! I have slaughtered you.

It's a cash cow... and we ALL fell for it.

Every review I read said it was bad. So I avoided it.

Still on 360 here, so no.

With the plug now officially pulled on that console, though, this may be my year to upgrade.

Spawn and die. Spawn and die. Over and over.

If that's your thing, then go for it. But it is certainly repetitive. It looks and sounds GREAT. It looks and sounds like like Star Wars. There are just so many things that don't feel right though. It needs to expand, A LOT. Where's all the prequel battlefields? Where's the speeders? Where's the classes of soldiers? It's just not the game I (and seemingly a lot of other people) thought or hoped we'd get.

That said, I'll still just and and play some nights if I'm feeling the mood.

Got this on release and put some time in with it having enjoyed the Beta. I've also put a little bit of time (i.e. thousands) of hours in Battlefield games. It was a little bit too casual as I gave this up fairly quickly compared to the Battlefield games but then it was also a bit of burnout on the style in general there.

If they had been quicker with more DLC I might be still playing. I'm very glad I didn't shell out for the season pass as they just haven't put out content fast enough in that regard.

I liked Walker Assault. I liked the environments/look/sounds of the game. It feels like Star Wars. I thought the co-op single player stuff was entertaining enough for not being a proper campaign.

It was a nice change of pace from Battlefield.

The game modes all play differently enough in multi-player to keep things fresh there if you're not a one mode kind of player.

Liked that they went easier on the unlocks and customization stuff compared to Battlefield 4 but think the game still suffers a bit from not having more dedicated classes.

Did not like the starfighter flight mechanics.

Could have been pushed a bit more towards Bad Company 2 I think with still being kept casual accessible. It is still a "twitch" shooter to a degree and there is a learning curve that can be steep with any of these kinds of games. While they undoubtedly chased the hardest of the hardcore out with the casualness easing up on the nostalgia driven noobs, they went to far I think for guys like me that want to play all the time but never rise past the middle of the pack on the scoreboard.

I got my money's worth out of it at full price.

I pretty much feel this exact way ... though the single player speeder chase through Endor more than made up for my need for speeders (and I've played it about a thousands times now ... so much fun!).

I feel about it the same way I feel about BvS - it isn't that it's terrible, it's just that you see bits and pieces that make you realize how much cooler it could have been!

Like Artoo, though, I guilty pleasure it from time to time, and when I do, I'm typically invested for hours and hours and hours.

Bought it not long after it came out. Played for a few hours. Haven't touched it since. It's Call of Duty, wearing a Star Wars skin. I dislike Call of Duty's multiplayer. A lot.

I eagerly followed the game all through development. Every time a new trailer would come out I would watch it several times and show it to my friends. "I'm buying this!". I got the game on midnight release for my xone, played it for a week, and never played it again. It was very monotonous. When I want to play Star Wars (always) I play SWToR on the pc. I can force leap into the fray on my Sentinel or cut down fools on my Sorcerer.
