The best medium size fighter wings.....

By Jondavies72, in Star Wars: Armada

Just wonder what people's thoughts are on the best set up for a medium size fighter wing say 45- 55points. Can you go general purpose or do you need to be specific anti fighter/bomber for those points.

For imps I'm presently of the view that 6 ties may just be the most efficient use of 48 points. It gives you 3 deployments and is capable of taking down a couple of bombers in a round.

Just thinking if it's worth the extra 8 points to change one tie to rymer for long range ship bombardment, as rymer and 5 ties should generate three damage per round.......?

A-wing swarm...fast nimble deadly they counter, throw a black dice...and when used with a good carrier can deal heavy damage.

I use 4 to 5 with gallant heaven, they only leave distance one to smack the rhymer ball. I have the 5th as Tycho

For Imperials I agree about 6 TIEs. If I've got some more points, I'll upgrade one of the 6 to Howlrunner. If I'm going light (which is outside the scope of this thread), I tend to go for 4 TIE FIghters with Raider backup.

For Rebels I like Jan Ors + 2-3 X-Wings (preferably 3). Or 4 YT-2400s. That's a bit more expensive than the 45-55 point limit you set, but I still consider up to 67 points or so (half your squadron allowance) a "medium size" fighter wing. I've see 4 A-Wings attempted but I've rarely been impressed.

For less than 55pts you are looking at:

52Points

Rhymer

Tie Advanced x3

50points

Howlrunner

Tie Advanced

Tie Interceptors x2

54pts

Awing x2

YT2400 x2

However, you better be running fast ships or have really good anti squadron fire. 70pts is about my minimum if I am actually relying on squads to defend me.

I like the a wings for speed, counter, and when hooked up with flight controllers they are solid.

Call me old fashioned, but the Jan Sex Swing gets old and makes me lazy.

I LOVE IG88 with an T/A and two T/F. 49pts and it's going to wreak havoc if you give it commands. I mean it's not the end all, but it works great for a cheap setup.

I've yet to find an equivalent Rebel setup.

So is number of deployments more valuable than efficiency of activation/punch ? Unless I'm going fighter heavy 100+ I've always liked more cheap fighters than less sexy do it all types or Aces, so tie over interceptor/advanced/ace, Y wing over b wing etc. I really want those deployments......

Sort of.

But a good example is Ywing versus Bwing. If you have minimal units, the heavy on the Ywing is a massive thorn in your side. Some things are worth the points even when you dont have many to spare.

I like 5 squadrons for my Imperial builds.

Dengar

TIE Advanced

Mauler Mithel

Hi Stasy, I've been trying out builds like this (currently playing with IG, T/A and 2 Agressors). Any advice on how you use your build would be gratefully received please! Cheers!

Typically it's a case of engaging the highest priority fighter on their team with IG. I usually go in under 2 contexts:

With or without a supporting carrier. If you have something built to support the fighters, I'll usually hang back a turn to make sure it does its job. Or I'll sick IG on the leading turn and follow the next turn or two with the advanced as a meat shield.

Yeah, they could have Intel and pull away, but it's still a thorn for its fighters to deal with. And if they don't have any squads, it's a mediocre threat with its anti ship dice.
