Split fire

By thepicto, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I was looking at the tie/d title and it lets you make a second attack. Is there anything stopping you from choosing a different enemey for the second attack? I haven't found anything in the rules yet, but I haven't seen anyone mention multiple targets whenever tie/d comes up. Talk is always of hitting the same target twice. Am I missing something obvious?

You declare each target separately, so there's nothing stopping you from shooting two different targets.

People often talk about shooting the same target twice because there are a couple specific advantages. First, with any gun against any target, if the target had to spend any tokens to defend itself, it's less able to defend against the follow-up attack. Second, after hitting with the Tractor Bean, the target's Agility is lowered, so it makes sense to shoot it again with the primary weapon.

There's no limitation on the target for the second attack, so you can split your fire.

People typically talk about attacking the same target for two reasons. First, it's typically a good tactic to concentrate your fire on a single target until it's destroyed; second, you're guaranteed to have that target in arc at Range 1-3, but there's no such guarantee about anyone else.
