I'm running a RPG/campaign style game using Armada and would like to recreate the battle of Deneb. While the outcome should obviously strongly favor the rebels, what recommendations would you have as to set up?

Well, my trusty West End Games 1987 Star Wars Sourcebook (best-buy-ever!) tells me that the Imperial Fourth Attack Squadron was composed mostly of Victory-class Star Destoyers and deployed in two wings. This deployment and the slow speed of the VSD allowed the Alliance taskforce under Grisserno to concentrate its attack on first one wing then the other, defeating each in detail, as the two Imperial wings could not move fast enough to support each other.

So definitely use VSDs, and no ISDs; maybe have the Empire deploy first, with forces split in two at opposite ends of their deployment zone, give the Rebels a good admiral (we need a Grisserno card!!! ). Probably limit the amount of extras and upgrades the VSDs carry. The Rebels would be a force strong enough to overwhelm at least 2 Victories (e.g. 3 corvettes, 2 NB-frigates, 1 Mon Cal cruiser, with fighter support:. I seem to recall another mention of the battle that suggsted there was a strong involvement of Y-Wings as well). IF you don't have enough VSDs for two wings, you could always battle out just the initial phase of the battle, the attack on the first wing.

I am actually just taking a break from fighting another battle described alongisde the Battlle of Denab in the Star Wars Sourcebook: the Empires attack on the Eyttyrmin Batiiv pirate base. This was a more glorious chapter in the Victory-Star Destroyers record (. Alas, in my re-fight of the campaign, the Empire may be in trouble as the Victory has lost most of its fighter-screen and its shields are down (against 1 surviving corvette, 3 armed medium transports, 8 rogue & villain's freighters, plus a squad of Z-95 fighters). The Emperor will not be pleased...
