Obligatory Wave 5 Speculation Thread

By DUR, in Star Wars: Armada

Has there been any official word on the expanded universe in terms of it being off limits?

It seems like an incredibly foolish idea to limit potential sales like that but I guess its how sensitive Disney is to their brand (which I wouldn't be surprised if they are). And EU stuff is in the game already and they have designed their own stuff.

In fact are FFG even bound by Disney rules as Im guessing they signed contracts before Disney came knocking?

The Expanded Universe is not neccessarily "off limits", but it is off limits for anyone doing canon work.

Armada is not Canon.

Everything must still be approved, and certainly, its probably going to be taken into account when you get to Canon potentiality....

But if you are writing a book, or designing a video game, then you must adhere to Canonicity, or apply any new concepts to LFL to be canonised, effectively.

Essentially. Eveyrhing's got to be approved. Canon or not. But Canon will always be given preference, as it does not raise a question later - namely, is that canon?

The Hammerhead is canon due to Rebels and I would buy a model of that and I don't even play Armada.

Beta-class ETR-3 escort transports to remotely pilot the experimental TIEs from X-Wing Alliance!

For that matter, how about the Gamma-class ATR-6 assault transport to make boarding actions against enemy ships? You wouldn't be able to capture the ships, of course, but you could perhaps reduce their effectiveness as the boarders sabotage key systems and the ship's crew has to repel the boarders.

As for more likely candidates, Lancer frigates and Carrack cruisers come to mind, as well as maybe Marauder-class corvettes for the Rebels.

FFG seems to have really pulled back on using stuff from the Expanded Universe. I wouldn't count on anything else coming out from that source material. It's more likely anything currently in development is from new Disney material, or anything from the OT that hasn't been done yet. I'd expect something from either The Force Awakens, Rebels, or Rogue One in the immediate future rather than things like Dreadnoughts or Assault Frigate Mk I stuff. The Prequels actually offer all kinds of stuff for Armada, but they seem reluctant to use that as well. So, let's hope Rogue One has some cool new ships or old ones that made it into the new canon.

Btw, were Dreadnoughts or Z-95s ever used in the movies? I expected to see them in the Prequels but if they were there I never spotted one.

I belive that Z-95's showed up in The Clone Wars cartoon. I could be mistaken. The artwork bugged me too much to watch it even though I hear the story in got really good as it went.

yes they were in the clone wars series.

"The EF76 Nebulon-B frigate was a capital ship manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards and was used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic throughout the Galactic Civil War."

That's all that's stated in the new "Canon" now.

The Times... The Are A Changin'.

I sing to the melody of world on fire:

I dont let Disney decide my canon for meeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Keep Flyin' Browncoat.

The Alliance Won.

Here and There.

My predictions:

Imperial:

Imperial Aces Star Destroyer

-Tector Sculpt

-Admiral Rae Sloane

-Commander Ciena Ree

-Harbinger title

-Subjugator title

-Vigilance title

Arquitens-class cruiser (1 red Anti-squadron)

Rebels:

Hammerhead frigate

-Leia as admiral?

Pelta-class frigate

-Commander Jun Sato

-Phoenix Home title

Shuttles & Gunship Pack

-Lambda Shuttle

-VT-49 Decimator

-Resistance Shuttle

-Krayt Gunship

Cause I'm all about dat hanger...bout dat hanger...yo Antillies!

I'd roll a carrier CR90 build.

0d90bedaa5.jpg

FarStar would be epic....squadron 2 with antilles making her 3...a pocket carrier in the sense.

Why the CR90 isn't squadron 2 is baffling...there were some tricked out mod!

I want Lando Millinium Falcon sqd.

And Arvel Cryned A-wing sqd. (Special rule: when activated, you may chose to destroy this squadron and one enemy ship it is in base contact with)

SO BROOKEN!!! :) :) :)

Regarding future releases, The Come Wars, and the Legends EU:

The defining reason why things are added from any sources is entirely to do with whether or not Disney

A: Can make the new material look and feel like Star Wars. Star Wars has a distinctive look crafted over 40 years which had been translated across multiple eras and time periods.

B: Can find a good reason for it to appear in future projects, such as films or TV shows or games or comic books.

C: Can copyright the design as exclusive to Star Wars.

The reason we will never see the Lancer Frigate, for example, is because the Lancer looks like this

LancerFrigate_05.jpg

And the Raider looks like this

SWX30_10067_RaiderOverhead_TimothyBenZwe

Even though the concept of the Lancer is solid, and even though it previously existed in the Star Wars universe, the Raider looks much more like a unique Star Wars design than the Lancer in every way. And the same goes for characters and equipment that may show up.

I simply got a Lancer frigate from shapeways and use it as a Raider II w/ Impetous. Pretty much the same thing. Quad laser turrest makes it pretty thematic (not super effective, but thematic).

The "problem" with many EU ships is that they were designed before every Imperial capital ship had to be dagger shaped and every fighter had to be a TIE. The Gozanti is a fluk.

It wasn't that Imperial ships have to be daggers. Instead, it's that many of those ships didn't have to be anything. There was effectively no oversight and authors and illustrators could basically make stuff up on a whim because George only really cared of it was profitable and didn't interfere with future projects.

The main bad guys by the end of Legends were flying rocks made out of coral. They barely even looked like they could move. That's the brilliant minds who were creating or favorite old ships.

I reckon the rebels will get the Assault Frigate Mk1, but not sure what ship the Imps will get.

I'd like to say we'll also get some new fighters (E-Wing, Z95, Defender, Phantom?), but I'm not sure what they'd bring to the game that the existing fighters don't? Instead, an Aces style pack is more likely, giving alternatives of the squadrons we already have.

Seeing as both waves 3 and 4 had only 2 expansions, I think this will be a recurring pattern. My guess/hope (sort of) is that we'll get Artiquenz and Pelta expansions The Artiquenz will be small and come with a new tie fighter ace as well as the Inquisitor's advance and will cost $30-35. The Pelta will also be small, come with a new A-wing ace (I haven't seen the second season of Rebels so I don't his name.) and the Ghost and will cost the same price.

I choose to pretend that the New Jedi Order stories don't really exist, even in Legends they don't. You can't convince me otherwise :P
