Will R5-P8 damage after defending trigger Greedo?

By Mozic, in X-Wing Rules Questions

For reference, the card effects:

Greedo: The first time you attack each round and the first time you defend each round, the first Damage card dealt is dealt faceup.

R5-P8: Once per round, after defending, you may roll 1 attack die. On a hit result, the attacker suffers 1 damage. On a crit result, you and the attacker each suffer 1 damage.

So my question is about whether or not the R5-P8 damage is a valid trigger for Greedo. I feel like this is not likely to be the case, but I love getting consensus regarding action order and trigger windows.

The scenario where this would work hypothetically looks like this:

  1. Attacker fires at ship with Greedo and R5-P8
  2. Attacker misses (no damage card was dealt)
  3. Defender elects to test R5-P8, rolls either a hit or crit
  4. Greedo activates, the attacker takes a faceup damage card (assuming they take hull damage)
  5. If it was a crit, so does the defender.

It's possible that Greedo can't trigger simply because R5-P8 occuring "after defending" and Greedo's "the first time you defend" don't overlap, but I would certainly enjoy it if the two made for a particularly nasty form of discouragement against attackers.

No.

The trigger for Greedo and the trigger for R5P8 don't intersect; Greedo happens during the attack, R5P8 happens after.

Greedo would trigger first on defense if no shields are on the attacker's ship. With shields Greedo wouldn't trigger. You could trigger R5-P8 anytime during a round if you're being shot at more than once but only use it once per round.

Timing wise Greedo is part of the combat sequence whereas R5-P8 triggers after the combat sequence.

Their is no defending against R5-P8 so it doesn't count as the "first time defending" to trigger Greedo. You have to have the opportunity to roll green dice to trigger Greedo.

R5-P8, Anti-Pursuit Lasers, Ion projector use a dice mechanic to trigger their ability but because they have rolled dice doesn't mean it is an attack, with a subsequent defence roll.

That's not quite what I meant but it does address what could have been a potentially more perplexing interaction between two ships both equipped with R5-P8. It's certainly unfortunate in my opinion that it's not the case. :P
