New questions from the MOST recent playtest...

By limelight, in WFRP Rules Questions

Still having a blast with the new rule set. Players seem very engaged during play (partly because there is so much to look at/through, etc...)

Some new questions have come up:

  1. Does the wizard/ initiate careers automatically gain their advanced skills? I did not thick they did, but it surely minimizes their options as far as training goes.
  2. Are there some talents that are ongoing? or are they one use then you need to spend a man. to "plug in" a new one? Charge, for example, makes sense to have a recharge (4) but others like Combat Alertness (gain 1 defense as long as you have no active defense actions recharging) or Order/ Faith. So these recharge?? do these also get a recharge of (4)? A Troll Slayer using Troll Feller strike can't use any active defenses while that action is recharging...does he then wait 3 rounds with no other defenses??
  3. How do you handle talents out of encounter mode?? Likewise social actions? Must you always use encounter modes for social encounters???
  4. One of my players, tried to play an initiate of Sigmar. He wanted to play him like a battle priest but ran into some obstacles. Some spells: have the "while this spell is recharging this effect happens". So for example "Righteous Strength" While this card is recharging gain +1 dam to melee attacks"...but as soon as the player casts the spell and his turn is over he REMOVES one recharge token from each of his cards....this then reduces his time with the spell in effect before he can even use it....it this correct???
  5. Are there any instances where you can use 2 actions of a different type: such as assess the situation and use an attack?

Thanks for any help/ feed back...these forums are great and have so many helpful people on them!

1. Honestly we don't know, expect it to be in the FAQ. In my games they will have their 2 spellcasting skills acquired.

2. any talent that doesnt use the word exhaust is a passive benefit - like charge is just up all the time.

3. talents can be swapped at will in story mode, no you dont have to use encounter mode for social encounters.

4. at the moment yes, so the duration is one turn shorter (but cooldown on regular attacks is one turn shorter as well)

5. only curry favour +blessing or channel power+spell. and that is because it specifically states it in the magic books.

1. Wizards do (it says in ToM). Initiates don't, as far as we can tell, since there is nothing in any of the books that says they do.
2. It depends on what you mean by "ongoing". As long as the talent doesn't say "exhaust" (or is exhausted), it can be used whenever appropriate as long as it is socketed. Charge, for example, does not exhaust. Therefore, it is available all the time if socketed. Of course, the talent itself only allows the [W] bonus on the same round you engage an enemy. If it doesn't exhaust, however, it doesn't have a recharge.
3. It depends on the talent. Talents can be freely socketed in Story Mode, and freely used, although there is some GM discretion.
4. Yes.
5. Only if an action card specifies you can do so. For example, the Execution Shot action card allows the user to shoot with the Execution Shot card and then use the basic Melee Strike action card. The other exception is Quickcasting, where wizards/priests can channel/curry favor and then cast a spell/blessing in the same turn. Otherwise, the standard is a single action card per turn.

I would add that there are NO recharge 1 actions, and basically that when I look at recharge numbers I assume it means that for that many turns -1 the effect will last, since as soon as I use it, the first recharge token goes away. Same thing goes for combat actions though, if I see a recharge 2 action, I know that means I can use it every other turn.

There is (at least) one Recharge 1 action, its the one for throwing, I forget it's exact name.

I stand corrected, though I think that particular card was mentioned in another thread as having some side effect that could make it have a longer recharge.
