Collection of alternative tournaments and leagues

By rilesman, in X-Wing Organized Play

Is there a repository of alternative league setup and rules and likewise for tournaments. Some have gained popularity like Furball. Some derivatives sound great. Knowing feedback on what worked and did not also would be interesting.

Also concerned about IP as an idea I proposed is going to be a league at my local store in June but comes from a theme in Mad Magazine.

I have not come across such a thing, but it would certainly be cool to build one.

So far the official FFG supported tournament formats are:

  • Standard (100 point dogfight)
  • Escalation (four rounds at 60/90/120/150 points, have to keep all pilots/upgrades from last round and only add on to them, not move things around)
  • Hanger Bay (bring two squads, pick which one to actually use at the start of each match)
  • Epic (300 points, allows Huge ships)
  • Team Epic (2v2, 200 points per player, allows Huge ships)

Other formats I am aware of:

  • Furball / free-for-all
  • Scenario/mission play (either from Mission Control or the missions included in FFG products)
  • Highlander (your list must be 3 ships, one from each faction, faction-specific upgrade rules are still respected, e.g. no fair putting Palpatine on a Falcon) - this one has actually been getting pretty popular in the Seattle scene.
  • Any non-standard point level (60, 75, 120, 150, 200, whatever)
  • Stario Kart (set up a "race track" made of obstacles and such, each player flies one ship, first to complete some number of laps win, shooting each other is allowed but destroyed ships get to re-enter the race the next round)
  • Hate The Meta (at the start of a league, players take turns naming cards they want banned, then this ban list is enforced for the duration of the league)
  • Custom Card League (players submit and agree on custom cards before the league starts, then use them in the league)

There are likely more that I'm not thinking of right now or haven't heard of before.

Bounty Hunter League.

Each player starts with 5pts.

Players "Bid" points before a match.

Players can only bid the points they have.

If any player is reduced to zero they can only challenge points leader.

If they beat leader they still half of leaders points.

Most points at the end of X amount of days win.

Spy vs. Spy League.

Play an opponent with your list in first game. Record win or loss
Play your opponent's list from game one for second game. Record win or loss
Turn in result points.

100pt max lists.

Win with your list, win with opponents list: 10 pts
Lose with your list, win with opponents list: 8 pts
Win with your list, lose with opponents list: 4 pts
Lose with your list, lose with opponents list: 2 pts

You can not play two of the same ship types against the same opponent in following matches. Must play at minimal 3 different opponents.

Still requires letting someone move your ships and use your cards. Sanitizer could be provided.

This format will give some players who do not own a ship a chance to play them and with builds they never considered. Gives an opportunity to broaden ones mind.

Yes, I did not make the Highlander tournament like I wanted to as I went to a Hunger Games instead. I was very interested.
