Sweet Dash Attack combo?

By ChewfalconSolo, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I was pairing up the Falcon and the Outrider.

While trying to come up with a selection of things for the Outrider. I came up with this:

Merc Co-Pilot

Outrider (Title)

HLC.

If I attack with HLC. Do as it asks by changing Crits to Hits. Can I THEN change a hit to a Crit at Range 3?

yes, card abilities do not kick in until the modify dice step. Other cards like Ezra, Marksmanship, all work the same way.

Yes, you can. HLC does not forbid crit results, just makes you change the crits from the initial rolls to hits. You are free to modify the results afterwards. If you reroll a die (target lock, predator etc) and its a crit, you can keep it.

As a side note, while this is a completely legal combo and works just the way you think it does, the YT-2400 has just one crew slot--and it has a pretty long list of choices that will be more reliable and more effective than a Mercenary Co-Pilot.

I can't agree more. Merc. Copilot adds almost nothing to your offense. There are so many better crew cards that turn Dash into quite a monster.

What pilots do you all suggest? Seeing as I'm running it with the Falcon it would be kind of costly with one too many things.

Kanan Jarrus or Kyle Katarn. Almost exclusively.

So, in other words, do exactly what everyone else does because.... reasons.

@OP: If you want to run Outrider with HLC and Merc Pilot, and feel confident you can maneuver to keep your opponents at R3, then go for it. Fly what you want to fly and have fun.

There's no reason not to play Dash with Merc Copilot, but... there's a reason the most common builds are as common as they are. It's because they work. Dash is a ship that relies on heavy manoeuvring and lots of actions, and is still very vulnerable to getting donut holed. Staying at r3 is incredibly tough when people will be burning to get into r1 where you can't HLC them, and you can only clear your stress with a maximum of a 2-speed move. Whereas clearing your stress with any non-red manoeuvre or gaining a die mod when you do so is a huge boon to his normal style of flying, and will usually, though not always, work.

Obviously, people can try whatever they want to try, but there's a good reason why the majority play what they do.

Not to mention that I was answering the question the OP asked.

Depends on how fat your Falcon build is i.e. how many points you have left over.

Certainly the Outrider/HLC/PTL/EU/Kanan build on Dash is the most optimised build for him albeit expensive, but he's still viable and fun with different builds.

Consider taking Leebo with Outrider/HLC instead, and for an alternative to Merc Co-pilot for getting a crit out of the HLC try taking Recon Spec and Calculation.

I'm taking a Chewy Falcon and Dash Outrider to a tournament in 2 weeks that probably isn't the most optimal build, but it will be flying Dash a lot differently to kiting at distance and should be a lot of fun.

Falcon/Outrider is a very solid build, though a lot of people are doing Ghost/Outrider these days.

Chewie/Dash and Chewie/Leebo are both VERY long slogs to beat which makes them strong in a tourney environment.

As noted you do want to fly it a little differently whilst the companion ship is alive, because a large based ship can shield Dash's donut hole so effectively.
