Combat Tokens

By AJH123, in Runebound

Hello, All

I've just had my first game of v3 and I'm generally very impressed. There were just a couple of issues. One in particular involves the combat tokens.

If a player is left with nothing other than an agility token, is he forced to use it (on their enemy)? And if not, is he/she forced to "pass"?

As I understand things, if a player passes they can no-longer participate in the remainder of the combat round. However, it may be advantageous if the player were able to wait until later in the round before spending the agility token.

Pass: pass is not compulsory as long as you have some tokens left in the pool (but you must pass once that you have nothing remaining in the pool and you're supposed to spend a combat action). Still, if you pass, you pass, meaning that you cannot "unpass" and spend eventually unspent tokens. So, in your example, you're not forced to pass, nor to spend the token; but if you pass with the Agility symbol unspent, that token is lost for that combat round

Hi, Julia -

That's what I thought. It's a shame really because the player could have a perfectly good agility token but no useful (tactical) way to use it. In the scenario above you have to wait for an opportunity in your opponent's sequence to play the agility token to best effect. If you are forced to use it as soon as possible, however, you may miss out on using it later in the round. For example, your enemy could have an ability which allows them to recast their own tokens. It's at that point that the player's agility token would come in handy.

What about if you could spend a "dash" token to skip your turn? This would allow the player to "wait" until later in the combat round before spending their agility token!

Spending the dash token is not allowed (should be buried somewhere in the Rules Reference), I'm afraid.

As for "pass" being an absolute condition... it's a pity for some reasons, and a blessing for others: if players were allowed to stall and then play again, some game effects could make the game lasting forever
