Dice modify

By teeg123456, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Ok so I just watched an old ffg x wing tutorial and it showed the attacker roll dice then modified them, then the defender rolled and they compared them and assigned damage.

I thought it was like this

Attacker rolls

Defender modifies attack dice

Attacker modifies attack dice

Defender rolls dice

Attacker modifies defense dice

Defender modifies defense dice

Compare and assign damage.

Example

I roll 1 hit, 1 crit, 1 blank

Defender uses sensor jammer to change 1 hit to focus.

I in turn use focus to change back to hit.

Defender rolls dice

Rolls 1 focus, 1 blank.

I can't modify them

He uses his evade token

End result he takes 1 critical

Thanks for any info or links in errata that states it

Yes, that sequence is correct. The person who rolled the dice gets the last opportunity to modify them in each case. The following has some examples for each step.

1: Any modifications to number of dice rolled (e.g. Kanan Jarrus pilot, Miranda Doni, range modifiers) are applied.

2: Attacker rolls attack dice

2a: Defender modifies attack dice (e.g. Sensor Jammer)

2b Attacker modifies attack dice (e.g. Target Lock, offensive Focus, Advanced Targetting Computer)

3: Defender rolls defence dice

3a: Attacker modifies defence dice (e.g. Juke, Zuckuss crew)

3b: Defender modifies defence dice (e.g. Evade token, defensive Focus token, Lone Wolf (defence))

4: Compare results. Various effects take place here e.g. Wampa, Crack Shot.

5: Deal Damage. Various effects take place here e.g. Bossk pilot, Greedo crew, Draw Their Fire, Prince Xizor, anything which cancels or flips incoming damage cards etc etc etc

The order of 2a and 2b (as well as 3a and 3b) usually trips people up. I usually explain it as your opponent gets an opportunity to modify your attack/defense roll before you do. Also, for the longest time, there weren't many ways for a defender to modify attack dice (and vice versa). We now have lots of changes for that timing window to trigger.

Great thanks

Maybe in the old video, the defender did not have a way to modify attack dice.

Dice modification has come a long way in the past year or two.
