FFG Topic "Fly Casual"

By Drasnighta, in X-Wing

Its factions have recruited new aces like Poe Dameron and "Omega Ace" .

Lol at Omega Ace.

Lol at Omega Ace.

Mr. and Mrs. Ace had so many kids they finally just gave up on trying to figure out real names...

The article mentioned scaling down the number of ships to one or two. I would say the scaling down too much hurts. If you're playing one ship verses one ship, which I've played, get boring fast.

But over all they said something we all know. There isn't a right way to play. It's Star Wars, have fun.

Side Note: I wonder why that published this?

I have a bad feeling about this...

I dunno, seems benign to me. Do you think this will trigger a backlash or something? I think they're just saying that there are other ways to play besides tournament style games, and people should play what they like.

Perhaps someone thinks there's too much/exclusively tournament talk on the forums which gives a skewed perspective of game play? Maybe there's a real update related to scenarios brewing? Or they know everything else is getting a release announcement except us and they're trying to show us they haven't forgotten.

Like their support for non-standard gameplay, the article is fluffy but lacking any meat to sink our teeth into. As others have said, Mission Control is out of date and missing so many tokens on top of the most recent waves of ships.

OP doesn't offer any missions or scenarios - just prizes for stores to do with as they please with the suggestion of tournaments or leagues culminating in tournaments.

FFG;

Fix Mission Control. Make it useful. Make us want to visit it.

FFGOP;

Give us playtested scenarios and missions. Send them out seasonally with the OP kits. Post them online in Mission Control.

Don't just tell us we have to make everything up ourselves if we want anything outside of 100point dogfights.

There is nothing wrong with the article.

The forums however...

I just wish they had used a different term.

2/10

Couldn't find a street date for imp. Veterans in the article.

So the article lied, there are no campaigns or missions you can play in X-Wing?

I've been thinking of picking it up for a while but i'd like to play it with my regular IA play group if I could besides just competitively at my LGS.

There are only the 4 campaigns with the 4 Epic ships.

Just going to say that the Shuttle Tydirium Podcast beat FFG's marketing team to the punch by about 3 weeks:

Shuttle Tydirium Podcast: The Mothership for Casual X-wing Play

FFG was listening....

I agree. I think they are forced to recognize that The Shuttle Tydirium podcast is changing the way people see X-wing. They even use our Mothership of Casual X-wing in the banner of the article! Obviously our podcast is breaking barriers in this game. ;)

Actually, I did see a post in another thread today. The post stated that they played an Epic game and it was an absolute blast. Ever since they quit tournament play they have had a lot of fun. Someone's response was:

I envy you sir. I'll be leaving the game soon. The competitive environment has crushed my spirits too much.

Well....there are only 4 official campaigns from FFG. Each came in one of the Epic ships. If you are looking for campaigns, though, you really need to chec out the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. It's all fan made and it's fully co-op. It's utterly brilliant and your group would probably love it.

Besides that, there are a number of fan made campaigns, especially on Mission Control.

And even if you are not changing the way we all see X-Wing, I think you guys are at least the point of the spear in acknowledging that many us who love the game could care less about tournaments. There have been a lot of threads on the forums about this recently, and (although I heard the designers once say they don't pay too much attention to the forums) somebody at FFG obviously has been looking.

I have to admit that I came out to these forums only to try to improve my casual play, and instead of being enlightened or encouraged, all I really found was a lot of meta- talk, list bitching, and indirectly telling me that half the models I bought were complete crap to play in the game. After I bought $50 is Syck fighters, I really don't want to hear how much they suck. It was almost enough to make me think that I was done investing in this game, or at least done looking for help.

I'm not sure how much tournament play drives a collectible game like this, but it obviously must, or they would not do it. OTOH, wouldn't it be fun if FFG created the Tydirium title card With Han, Chewie, Leia, and Bothan Spy pilots and the Rebels could fly the Lambda, META BE DAMNED!!!! Fine, make it tournament illegal. Release it as a $3 pack of pilot cards with no model. Release Han, Lando and Chewie as Scum versions of the YT-1300, not legal for tournament play and no model. Release 12-card Squad Packs (again, with no model) that flesh out 12 pilots for a single model, and make their abilities interlink and only help other pilots in the squad, not other ships in general. Then, you get a perk for flying the Teirfon Aces together in 4-12 Y-Wings. Something like that would bring much more enjoyment to the game than colored stands and dial protectors for about the same price point.

I'm very glad that FFG has officially spoken for Flying Casual. . .but if they don't support it more aggressively with non-Tournament events and releases, I would still be worried about the long-term stamina of this game for players uninterested in Aces, Scouts, and Fat Han.

Love this.

That said, good luck. You will probably get a ton of grief from the "X-Wing Elite" about your opinion being wrong or some such.

You should submit a custom card or two in the Custom Card League . I think it would be awesome to have a scum Han, or a Rebel shuttle pilot or two. Could be very interesting.

It's not a bad article. I keep seeing to many people upset about "The meta" and how there bummed out because they "Can't" fly their favorite ships to win. It's a gentler way from FFG to remind them sometimes "The only meta is having fun!" (Joe Boss). Which is why I've decided to scrap my Imperial list for this upcoming Regional in Nc for something a little more.... Rebellious.

Darn "like" quota hit....

Thank you. Luckily, all the hate is in another thread that I won't bother contributing to. I think most of the "elite" tournament players are there.

I have been working on my 12-card squad idea. . .

Ok so after looking at this Heroes of Aturi Cluster I just can't figure out why FFG hasn't done something similar to rake in the dough?

This has a huge appeal to the crowd that also wants to play a game cooperatively with friends, which is a growing market for sure. If this was legit I would pay for it, but I will gladly take it for free.

Wake up FFG! THIS is the kind of thing that gets me into the game... unfortunately this campaign seems to require a large number of ships and therefore is not as appealing as it could be.

If FFG could do a mini campaign with a core box set, more than the 3 ships in their existing one, it would be a lot more appealing to the casual gamer. But I guess I am not their target audience.

A. I think something like this is just something they don;t have time for. . .in truth, I would rather see them spend the time getting more ships into the game.

B. I think that was the main reason for the Fly Casual post.

C. The large number of ships could be dispersed amongst numerous players. When I first started, I agreed to be Imps so that I would only have to buy 1/2 the ships.

D. If you are an X-Wing player, you ARE their target audience. And I am convinced by today's article that they do, in fact, have an ear to the rail. . .which is why I continue to voice my support for causal play in these forums.

As I think Imperial Assault can attest to, trying to split your limited focus and manpower on two separate goals does not tend to result in a totally equal game.

People are reading WAY to into this... here's what happened:

FFG online editor Jim: Hey Tom, where's that new spoiler for X-WING?

Tom: ummmmm... huh? I thought Sarah had the topic today...

Jim: No, she's out sick, we emailed you last night!

Tom: DAMNIT.... I don't have anything...

Jim: How about that Armada topic revealing that wave IV is just an updated movement tool?

Tom: No... I have that crappy sportsmanship topic we nixed a few weeks ago?

Jim: That pathetic thing? Didn't you write that as a joke?

Tom: Yea? So? They won't know the difference...

Jim: Yea, alright, post it...
