Is the barrel roll granted by BB8 considered an action? I ask this because of the difference in the wording on the BB8 card and Expert Handling. One says a free barrel roll the other a free barrel roll action.

It sounds like you have an old Expert Handling that was printed before it received errata. They are both actions.

I didn't phrase the question correctly. BB8 says I may perform a free barrel roll when I reveal a green maneuver. Can I take advantage of BB8 if I have stress? About 50% of these threads say "do what the card says" and "don't do what the card doesn't say". The card says a free barrel roll not a free barrel roll action. I mentioned Expert Handling because it uses the phrase "free barrel roll action" where BB8 doesn't.

Is this a case of bad phrasing on the part of FFG or is it a legitimate "free barrel roll"?

Yeah, mine does too. In fact, it being an action is what makes the BB-8+PTL combo work.

- Reveal a green maneuver.

- Trigger BB-8 and barrel roll.

- Trigger PTL to take another action, take a stress.

- Perform a green maneuver, clear a stress.

- Perform an action.

It's like a better, but more conditional, version of Advanced Sensors.

Very good point. I guess that I the reason one must have upgrade cards when playing an official tournament.

I have the cards but if I come up with a question (or a thought) I need to act on it quickly or it disappears like a soap bubble in a hurricane. Had the question in mind but not the cards in hand and relied on the web. An example of GIGO. Garbage In Gospel Out.

I know in those "how far can a ship possibly move in a turn" questions I also wondered about Echo w/ PtL and Engine upgrade when you measured total movement instead of just how far ahead.

Decloaking isn't barrel rolling, but one of the things you can do while decloaking is a barrel roll. Said barrel roll is not an action, and it does use a different template from the default barrel roll, but it is still a barrel roll. The fact that it doesn't stop you from barrel rolling again with your action is because it's not an action, not because it's not a barrel roll.
