*SPOILERS* Rogue One ships

By maxam, in X-Wing

Yeah I think tech should stay episode viii and beyond.

I think Tech was a dumb idea that shouldn't have existed in the first place.

I agree but the devs were clearly under a deadline and didn't have much to work with so they had to give the newer fighters something.

It's just a shame jj's such an uncreative hack.

Is it just me, or did JBR7 just "Good Post" himself?

I'm going to go and guess that the U-Wing will turn out to be equivalent to the TIE Shuttle. At least that's the game space I think it'll be used to fill. Assuming it's the shuttle we see what's her name in and the troops being air assaulted from in that one picture. It's something the Rebels don't currently have (multiple crew slots) and so wouldn't compete with any of the current Wing fighters. As to stats? I wouldn't try to guess those for a million bucks.

The TIE Striker will probably just fill the space between the LN and the INT. So firepower of the LN and maneuverability and speed almost as good as the INT. All for points between the two. It would mean you'd be getting generic Strikers for the cost of low end unique LNs, but if the dial is different enough it could be worth it.

No more 2 attack ties, me have too many as is.

;)

I'd maybe think of it being squint-style speed (or even faster, maybe speed 3 greens) with 3 attack, 2 defence 4 hull, maybe a crew slot.

More of a proto-phantom without the cloak than a proto-squint in terms of usage - glass-cannon rather than tank. Somewhere slightly north of AP in cost. Possibly even the same, I suspect 3/2/4/0 would balance up pretty well with 2/3/3/0 and 2/2/2/2 in terms of statline.

giving it's 2/3rds a phantom, it will have 2 and 2/3 red dice

No more 2 attack ties, me have too many as is.

This coming from the man with the ultimate 2 red TIE as his avatar? ;)

Only because they never made a defender one.

Just noticed they are sticking to the old EU figures for atmospheric speed.

It's funny that real aircrafts from 1950ies would outrun every single Star Wars starfighter. Supposedly "atmospheric" TIE Striker with "Advanced High Speed Wings" can only barely catch this:

and can't even hope to be able to follow this glorious mashine:

I dunno about Tech being a bad idea. I think it's just really started and there isn't a lot for it right now. I think it can be really cool and unique once we get more Tech cards, new ships, and new pilots. I think it's an interesting way to give some variety to the various new ships and make them different than their predecessors.

As for JJ being uncreative, I think they needed to ensure that Ep 7 wasn't bad and tried to make it as close to the original as possible. OK....they might have gone too far in that regard, but I think the pressure was on to recreate Ep 4. I don't think it's a bad movie, and therefor it revives the franchise.

Just like the article says, most likely all the important stuff (names, ships) are correct, just the descriptions and some images are placeholders (not really a surprise considering the gibberish/copypaste text and an image with T-70s).

A few people have commented that "U-Wing is a silly name. True, but don't lose hope; the only one of the five letter-Wing fighters named as such, IIRC, onscreen was the X-Wing, and even that sounded to me like a nickname. With any luck, no-one will explicitly name this thing in the film. :)

Shame as those two new ships just look bad imo. The new tie is like a tie interceptor but minus half the wings, so surely.. half as bad? No wait.. its going to be better!

I'm afraid the U-wing is the latter, at least that's what super-long whatever-it-is-in-the-front would suggest :(

I can understand the U-wing idea if it's supposed to be a Torpedo ship. So, we all know the Y-wings were used in the Clone Wars and pretty old by the time Ep 4 is out. It's slow, bulky, and armored, but a "work horse" fighter/bomber/torpedo ship. So, if you were to work on the next generation of the Y-wing, you would probably want to improve on it's speed and still have it have torpedoes. If you look at the U-wing as the next gen Y-wing, I think it makes sense. They keep the cockpit the same and add a bunch of engines on the back. The reason I think of it as a Torpedo boat is due to the article. It says REBEL FIGHTERS and has the bit about usually being fast and having torpedoes. So...that means it's either going to be in that genre, or utterly not in that genre, but I tend to think similar.

Someone stated that the U-wing is going to be used as a troop transport type ship, though. So....not sure what to think. How big will it be? I can see the need for a fast troop transport. Can it be a torpedo boat and a troop transport? Or maybe there are titles already to make it either a troop transport or a torpedo boat?

Is like an aggressor like ship with 2 primary and 2 crew slots for cheaper than the Falcon or Ghost. Throw in a title that converts the crew slots to bomb slot that never depletes and I'd be down.

I'm not a big fan of the U-wing concept art, but I think the actual ship has potential to look better. A common rebel landing craft was sorely needed in the EU. The two large prongs at the front reminds me of the Bantha-class assault shuttle, which was the rebel lander in the X-Wing comics. If the assumption that this is a lander is true we really need a new mechanic in the game for transport ships, as ~50% of the new ships for TFA and rogue one are transports. For now I am holding my judgement.

The TIE-Striker however I feel is really unnecessary, we have 4 canon TIE variants in this time period. It isn't a particularly bad design, it is 10x better than the FO an SF. But like every EU TIE it has the same(ish) cockpit, with slightly different wings. My hope is this is an ISB issue star fighter hence why we have never seen it before.

Other non-ship musings:

There is a new type of storm trooper next to the death troopers with what I am guessing is a flame thrower.

I am sad that the didn't use one of the existing names for the black armoured storm troopers; shadow trooper, dark trooper, storm commando.

The capped imperial is listed as the Director of the imperial military. I think it is more likely he is the director of the ISB based on his uniform.

We actually have 8 (counting the Striker):

TIE Fighter

TIE Interceptor

TIE Bomber

TIE FO

TIE SF

TIE Defender

TIE Striker

TIE Advanced

Ummm...

What about Vader right there in the middle? What's up with that huh?

That's to further remind you that it's a SW movie. People might get confused in the Stormtroopers aren't wearing white or the good guys have an imperial droid with them.

When I think of it as the next gen Y-wing, it looks alright to me. When I think of it as a troop transport....I dunno. Maybe it can do both? I kind of like it as a fast torpedo boat, personally.

You think it will be on a big base? Well....if it's a troop transport, maybe so. It doesn't look that big, though.
