Storage Solutions

By Maltodextrin, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

So, I currently own all of Imperial Assault, and through judicious use of plastic bags, by some miracle, I have managed to fit it all in the original box.

Obviously it's not ideal, and I'd love a cheap, compact, efficient storage solution that can not only reliably hold the current breadth of imperial assault, but have room for at least Bespin and the next Big Box expansion. Any Suggestions?

I have most of my miniatures painted and plan to finish the rest before Bespin lands in my lap with more plastic to pain. They therefore require some more care in regards to storage and transportation.

I have a bunch of these nifty little cardboard boxes filled with foam to hold all the miniatures:

There's also a variant with thicker pluck foam inserts for bigger stuff like the AT-ST and Bantha.

These fit into a carry bag made by the same manufacturer:

with enough room for another, larger box that I pulled all the foam out of and use to store all the board tiles and dice (ziploc baggies), cards (deck boxes) and tokens (tackle box). The bag is made specifically to fit the cardboard boxes snugly so that nothing rattles or bangs around inside.

It was a bit costly and took a bit of figuring out to fit everything, but the major advantage is that a) all the hard work and time spent on the painting is preserved by all the figures being safe and secure, and b) it's a very mobile setup that allows me to simply grab the entire bag, sling it on my shoulder and go off for a campaign play session at a friend's place or a skirmish tournament at the club or store, convenient since I don't have a car and rely on public transport and c) I still have plenty of room in the foam trays for future expansions. There's one pluck foam box and three standard compartment boxes in this setup. Each of the three holds three 20-figure trays, so I have room for up to 180 figures (a bit less technically, since stuff like E-Webs or Wampas take up the space of two compartments each). With every boxed expansion so far, every unique figure pack and two copies of every non-unique and non-Bantha pack, plus some bits and bobs like old WoTC stuff to replace some tokens in the campaign, I think I'm up to something like 120 so far. The pluck foam box holds the AT-ST, Weiss, the Bantha and the tank, with room for one or two additional massive models. I'd guess it'll be another 4-5 waves until I have to start worrying.

I'm a miniature game veteran so I guess this kind of solution just came naturally.

If you are interested, the manufacturer is a Polish company:

There's also another company in the UK that does a similar foam + cardboard + carry bag system.

A lot of people use tackle boxes, Plano is the top brand. My problem is that my tackle boxes are full of tackle as that is my other passion and any time I buy a tray to store my IA stuff I think hrm... I could put some of my crank baits in there.. maybe just a few to spread them out, oh now I can sort by time of the year and fish I am targetting.. ANNND its full.

www.feldherr.net has some great product made for the first 3 box sets. Theyre not perfect and the shipping is a little expensive to the States, but I think theyre really nice.

I bought feldherr foam boxes for my minis but honestly I'm kinda regretting it. They take up so much space and stop me from transporting my kit in anything less than a tour bus.

I varnish all my paint jobs, and I think the IA minis are sufficiently light that they probably can't get too bashed about. Gonna try out a series of separators and maybe plastic bags.

Feldherr stuff is great for X-Wing. For IA, I bought the Gothsonika inserts, which I find incredibly useful.

Plano 732 for all the minis and bits. Binder pages for all the deployment cards. CD binder for all the terrain tiles. Don't regret a dime I spent on it.

CD binder for all the terrain tiles.

Interesting solution. Aren't some of the rooms too big for a CD slot?

At the moment all of my stuff fits in 3 things:

The core box:

My large minis (AT-STs & Bantha)

A card box that contains all the campaign cards (it's one from an X-Wing tournament kit for size reference)

a small card folder to hold deployment cards

and a CD Binder thing (like this one ) which holds all my medium to small tiles.

A Trapper Keeper binder thingy I found at Office Max/Depot

All of the rulebooks and expansion maps are in 3 ring sleeves to sort them easily

All of the large tiles fit in some nice slots in my binder thing.

A plano thingy

Holds the rest of my miniatures, tokens, skirmish cards, and dice.

CD binder for all the terrain tiles.

Like maybe 10 of them from all the sets so far. They just hang out in the front of the binder. Makes set up a breeze.

Like the OP, I've been maybe weirdly obsessed with fitting everything into the core box. I haven't gone down the rabbit hole of painting everything yet, which still makes it plausible. The CD wallet hack for map tiles is brilliant, and I may need to steal that for myself.

This is pretty brilliant. Oficially stolen, I'm ordering the thing now.

I just had a laugh-out-loud moment at your turn of phrase. Not only do I have my stuff painted, but my pet rabbit actually ate most of my core set box

I researched this not too long ago, and ended up coming down on this as my choice: http://go7gaming.com/product/imperial-001-insert/

I also got the Twin Suns and Hoth Box inserts as well.

Overall I'm quite pleased. There are things that I wish were different, but mostly I'm very satisfied. Obviously there's some assembly needed, but I like that I use my original boxes for this, I like that I can store my tiles in one place, even from multiple expansions, and I have arranged my pieces so that, largely, I have my Rebel minis and cards all in the Hoth box, and the Imperials/Mercenaries all in the Core box.

I've been considering the binder with card holders, but I've already invested in and built a Broken Token organizer for this game and would like to capitalize on the purchase. The cards are sorted nicely in their specified tray, and the token trays are very convenient for storage and game use.

I haven't utilized the figurine tray yet, though, because I started painting the whole set as soon as the wood cutouts arrived. That definitely won't fit everything, unfortunately, so I'm wondering what to do now for storage.

Don't you varnish / coat them? (Admittedly, my enamels may be more durable than acrylics, but once coated I don't need to worry about them, and mostly about matte blacks before that. But then again, maybe people throw their planos more than me. :D )

An old GW minis case for the painted stuff, Plano for larger minis, binder with two sizes for cards, and the game box stores tiles and bagged tokens. About as ideal as I can figure out.

Before painting them, all the minis just went in the Plano. Now, even with varnish there's no way I'm trusting them in the Plano.

So I just found this... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/56924169/table-top-terrain-and-trays/description

I was considering getting the Warmachine Tournament Deluxe XL, which uses the same 25mm diameter bases, and later requesting a custom insert tray similar to the one shown on their Imperial Assault box but without the redundant cut outs for large units. Thinking about it, though, I don't need that massive storage box underneath. I think I'll go with two of the Warmachine Tournament Trays instead.

The Armada XL and a couple of the X-Wing trays will round off that purchase nicely!

????

Warmachine uses 30mm bases.

Whoa, that was close! Thank you for letting me know that. When I did my research, I must have searched for Warhammer base diameter instead of Warmachine.

Infinity uses 25mm bases, so I'll be able to use those inserts on the same boxes. That even allows me to fit more figures per tray.

got the gothsonika kit for the IA core set. took me about 4 hrs to get it together. went really slow as not to goof anything up. my review as follows the 1-10 scale with 10 being the best.

shipped = 10

clear instructions easy to follow = 8

material = 9

how it fits and carrys everything = 11 dude!!

i would have loved to stain it but im much more of a clumsy idiot than i am at woodwork. this kit came quickly and was such a nice addition to the mess that IA can be. This is why i havent played it much but now that i have the storage i can take it to buddies houses.

will i be getting the other sets? oh yes i will...

all in all i looked at the others and just ordered this one and i am so glad i did....this is working great.

Yeah, the Gothsonika inserts are really great. I've harassed him via PM about his future releases (Descent, and to see if he has other design ideas for Bespin) because I'd like more reasons to give him my money. :P

I bought this on kickstarter. I love it, all measured to the box and fits all figures from all expansions, even my return to hoth ones. i use the Twin shadows box mainly as figure storage also.

cant recommend them enough. https://thinkertinkermaker.us/star-wars-imperial-assault-insert-gallery/

I love this solution.

I use the Gothsonika stuff, too. Pretty easy to assemble with time and a bit of glue. The guy makes good stuff. Finally got around to getting the campaign trays. I'm hoping they'll be here soon.
