First post: First Regional Tourney (UK) list ideas. Any help/suggestions welcome :)

By 54NCH32, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi All, long time lurker, first time poster.

Been playing this awesome game since Feb, and this June I'm taking my first plunge into a tournament, so any advice on my possible lists would be great, I've narrowed it down to the two below (got a pretty big rebel collection too, but I've always been Empire at heart!).

Unfortunately, I don't own any legit XI7's or Intel Officers (just proxies for casual play) so I've had to build ignoring these cards. I'm hoping these lists might do some good I'm not looking to storm it and win, just looking forward to a day of Armada games and pew pewing at spaceships :D

Hope this is the right place (wasn't sure if here or organized play threads).

A) HMS Screevenger (388)

Imperial II-class Star Destroyer (164)
- Admiral Screed
- Phylon Q7 Tractor Beams 6
- Electronic Countermeasures 7
- Avenger 5

Victory II (102)
- Captain Needa 2
- Overload Pulse 8
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits 7

Gladiator I (88)
- Wulff Yularen 7
- Engine Techs 8
- Assault Concussion Missiles 7
- Demolisher 10

TIE Fighter x 4

12pt initiative bid (no idea of the bid meta in the area I'm playing at, but this feels like a fair bid to get the Demo double tap), so…
Demo/Wulff/ACM build doing its thing. Overload on the Vic (guaranteed trigger from screed if I can get in range) plus the Needa TRC's to make use of any blank reds (with Screed improving bad rolls as well). Avenger following up the overload (with Tractor beam to slow any nippy rebels down in red vs blue). 4 TIES to have some control on deployment and some anti-squadron.

Think it could work well, but wondering if the Vic may just be a bit too slow, (plan to counter this with a flank-covered deployment with him in the centre (Glad > Vic > ISD). Plus wondering if its worth squeezing gunnery on the ISD (maybe at the cost of a TIE?)

B) Raider Missiles (386)

Imperial II Star Destroyer (166)
- Admiral Screed
- Gunnery Team
- Phylon Q7 Tractor Beams
- Electronic Countermeasures

Gladiator I (88)
- Wulff Yularen
- Engine Techs
- Assault Concussion Missiles
- Demolisher

Raider I (51)
- Assault Concussion Missiles

Raider I (51)
- Assault Concussion Missiles

TIE Fighter X 4

What I hope is a strong 14pt bid. ISD tractor to slow any fast runners, gunnery team to capitalise on front arc and AS fire, Demo/Wulff/ACM auto-include (ha!), and the raiders, well… gonna playtest against my regular dueling buddies, but the idea is arc dodging flankers/expendable Screed missiles/or conga-line stoppers (if needed). Again the TIES for tying up squadrons and deployment control.

Objectives (If second player):

- Most Wanted
(Will choose a big hitter on their side, then mine will be a raider that may or may not leg it out of range or use as bait)

- Hyperspace Assault
(Divide and conquer)

- Minefields
(Board control. Funnel them in and rip them apart).

So yeah, any advice or suggestions to improve are welcome.

Also can I just say, these forums have been amazing at helping me get better at the game through clarifications and knowledgeable members, plus some amazing paintjobs on here (hope to do some decent pics of mine to post up soon). Loving the game and have hooked a few of my gaming crew as well, muhaha!

First, welcome to the forums! And this is indeed the right place for your post.

In a competitive setting, I would go with the raiders list. More activations, more deployments, and more maneuverability all make it more attractive to me. The Overload Pulse + Avenger combo looks like a lot of fun and I think you should definitely try it in a casual game, but I suspect it will be difficult to pull off consistently, even with Screed. For one thing, if you're really gonna try to make it work, then it makes you predictable.

If I were to change anything about the list, I would probably add Leading Shots to the ISD, Ordnance Experts to the Gladiator, and then consider dropping Tractor Beams. That's my two cents, hope you find it useful.

Cheers Shadow!

Ha, over the course of the day, I've actually gone off the overload / Avenger combo.

I'm swaying toward the raiders (gonna playtest tomorrow eve with my buddy). The extra activations will be nice (till they explode of course!) Agree on the tractors, decided to drop those.

Would the re-roll upgrades really be worth their points in a Screed fleet though? I suppose it could mitigate and utter whiff rolls. Thanks for the input.

The tractor beams could actually be useful in stopping the Demo/Wulff/ET combo should you run into it (because hey have to discard the Nav token if they have it), such as in the Clonisher fleet (in which case you'd really only hamper their striking range). But leading shots and OEs would be good. I'd also consider replacing all the ACMs with APTs. ACMs have the potential to do 2 extra hull damage, but only if the adjacent zones already have no shields, whereas APTs do an automatic hull damage regardless of the shields, it's a critical effect, and it costs 2 points less each (that's another 6 points to work with).

Hmm, fair point. I keep forgetting the likely possibility of blue vs blue. (re: tractors and Mirror Demo)

I have one copy of APT, so I could potentially put them on the Glad?
My only concern are their effectiveness compared to ACM once shields are gone. (The additional shield drain from ACM always seems to work out nicely as well), good shout though, maybe I'll change one of the raider loadouts).

Re: leading shots and OE, I always disregard them when I bring Screed in casual games, I may have to reconsider this stance when it comes to tournament play.

Cheers guys, keep it coming

Hey buddy, if this is your first Armada Tournament my top advice would be to take a list your comfortable using and used to playing as most of the regionals are likely to turn into a gruelling 4 round event and by round 3 you can often find you brain is in melt down and you can make simple mistakes and forget upgrade cards, so having a list your used to can make a massive difference. Taking a new list that you have little experience playing will add to the stress of a long day and you might find rather than having a fab day out it leaves a bit of a sour taste... also in Armada you can end up with a good table result by just playing steady through the tournament. Which Regional are you heading to?

The first place bidding isnt so extreme in the uk, so those bids should be good in most games.

Good shout. I'll likely piece something together from some of the casual lists me and my friend have been throwing at each other, I get a kick out of pushing the ISD and Demo around, so those will likely be the backbone of my list, but yes, I've abandoned the overload pulse idea, too much to rely on. And I'm heading to the Exeter Regionals (closest one to me down in Plymouth).

That's what I thought, still seems to be early days over here in the UK, so 10-14 felt like a healthy bid.

I shall be heading down to play at Exeter as well, going to use my bye there so I can relax in the morning and enjoy a nice breakfast and pace myself for the day . Also signed up for Cardiff as well and was pondering heading to the one London way but it would be three tournaments in three weeks which the wife might not be happy about.

Ah cool, the June 11th one? Yeah, thought I'd give it go, hardly any/no groups or organised play for SWA down in Plymouth, so thought I should defo get involved, meet some fellow fans and players. See you there.
