Spending a token on 0 results

Over in the "Are the Contracted Scouts TIE Phantom Bad?" Thread ( https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/220103-do-the-scouts-have-to-reach-pre-nerf-phantom-to-be-fixed/ ) Darkcloak brought up an interesting point.

I'm not sure I agree with the premise that Contracted Scouts are broken, but something feels wrong about spending a focus token to convert zero focus results, and then getting the R4 Agromech target lock. This lets the scout's 2 dice turret punch above its weight.

If the rules stated that spending a token was only allowed when there was at least one result to convert, which ships would it affect?

Anything with R4 Agromech would be slightly worse, and Keyan Farlander would no longer be able to burn his stress tokens without rolling an eyeball.

Once again, I'm unconvinced that the Scouts are broken, but this is the sort of rule-interaction based change that fits the feel of the cloaking fix. If it is decided on down the line that something needs to be done, it seems plausible.

Well, this rule interaction also makes abilities like Keyan Farlander and Garven more relevant.

Without it a few pilots become pretty awful.

I did think of Keyan, but I missed Garven. Keyan would have about a 60% chance of getting rid of his stress at range 2-3, and about 75% with a range 1 attack. I think Garven has the same odds of passing a focus.

Admittedly, neither of them is seeing much play and they would need something to be competitive as it is, but inconstancy in their abilities would make them worse.

I just don't understand why R4 Agro gets to spend its TL immediately. FCS is very strong for the same price. If they decide they need to nerf Scouts, I think they just need to errata R4 agro and make it so you aren't allowed to spend the TL on the same attack. But in that case, I think we would need some type of nerf to Palp Aces as well so they don't run rampant either.

I think its making up a problem where there is none. I love R4 Agromechs on any ship that can take it because it is so flexible. Good roll? Spend my focus anyway to store a TL. All blanks? Use my focus to gain a TL and use that. This is in no way broken, but adds a very nice degree of consistency. Beautiful on Y-Wings, too!

I really think a slight reduction in Jumpmaster efficiency is a nerf to PalpAces, because it lets the stressbot and Rebel Aces back into the meta. I'm pretty sure that one of the reasons PalpAces is so good right now (aside from efficiency) is that it is a wave 7 list that didn't change a huge amount, so people have a huge amount of practice with it compared to the new lists from wave 8.

Edit: Whoops, getting off topic in my own thread!

Thats because FCS has no prerequisite at all. R4 requires you to have an action. I'd say they are roughly equivalent in power with only the slightest lean towards R4.
